Lot 1617
1799. Large Obverse Stars. PCGS graded AU-58. PQ. A hint of golden tone with a bright and reflective tone to the fields, and softer, satiny gold on the devices. A lovely example of this popular early Eagle. Lots of mint luster evident. The surfaces are free of any deep marks or adjustments, and the eye appeal is much higher than often encountered. Only 37,449 struck, with 300 to 400 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report (PCGS # 8562) Value $19,000 - 20,000

Lot 1618
1801. PCGS graded MS-63+. CAC. PQ. Just graded for the first time. Lovely rich golden toning. Reflective surfaces on the reverse. A lovely coin that shows classic original soft yellow gold color, satiny luster and a solid strike. Only 44,344 struck, with 650 to 850 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report, this one is way out above the vast majority of those known in terms of quality and eye appeal.

In 1801 Thomas Jefferson took the helm of the United States as its 3rd President. The Louisiana Purchase came along in 1803, and Lewis and Clark had yet to set out to explore that massive addition to the territory of the United States. Here is a coin that witnessed it all, an historic reminder of times that were so different from today it would be hard to compare what daily life was like for a typical person then versus now. An important offering for the numismatist! Pop 1; 40 finer, 36 in 64, 1 in 64+, 3 in 65. (PCGS # 8564) Value $40,000 - 50,000

1801. PCGS graded EF-45. Lightly toned. Only 44,344 struck, with only 650 to 850 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. This one would make a fine addition to an advanced collection for the eye appeal and attractive surfaces. Well struck too, with classic golden toning thoughout and a pleasing example of this important and desirable type coin (PCGS # 8564) Value $10,000 - 11,000

Lot 1620
1842-O. NGC graded AU-58. Boldly struck with nice light golden toning. Nice and attractive for this low mntage, and condition rarity. The obverse shows a couple of old cuts in the surfaces, two on Liberty's lower chin, and another behind her hair bun in the field. The reverse is well matched and also appealing. This is a tough New Orleans issue to find in any grade approaching Mint State. Only 27,400 struck. Pop 26; 5 finer, 2 in 60, 2 in 61, 1 in 62. (PCGS # 8587) Value $10,000 - UP

Lot 1621
1845-O. NGC graded AU-58. Lightly toned with some mint luster evident. The surfaces show only light handling marks when closely scrutinized with a loupe, and the strike is sharp on all the devices. A condition rarity at this high grade level, and an important offering for the date or New Orleans collector. Only 47,500 struck. Pop 24; 10 finer, 3 in 60, 5 in 61, 2 in 62. Lot 1622
1846-O, 6 over 5. PCGS graded AU-50. CAC. Lightly toned with classic soft, satin gold hues over well preserved surfaces. This is a tough date and mint, which is rarely found this nice. The overdate feature has been discredited by Mark Borckardt and Q. David Bowers back in 1999 in Bowers and Merena Harry Bass Sale, Part II, Lot 1360 for discussion. Apparently the various date punches used for Half Dollars and Gold Eagles match perfectly, and show the same slight overlaps within the 6. That would imply more of a blundered date punch than an overdate used to create this die. This revisionist history continues as more and more coins are studied, and numismatists study multiple denominations. Often collectors focus on a single denomination, and while this allows for mastery of that denomination, sometimes the answers to old questions or traditions lie in other denominations that used the same punches and much can be learned therein. Hence a number of long held overdates have been reexamined and are now believed to be repunchings instead. Nevertheless, some traditions live on, with the '5' overdate in quotes. Only 81,780 struck. Pop 13; 27 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 8596) Value $3,200 - 3,300

Lot 1625
1859-S. NGC graded EF-45. Lightly toned on both sides. The surfaces are pleasing with smooth wear and minimal handling marks on the soft gold fields and devices. This is a vastly underrated issue. David Akers when discussing this date and mint noted it was "as rare as the famous 1858 or 1859-O issues". CoinFacts notes that about 45 are known today from the original mintage of only 7,000 struck. As such any offering of this date, especially in high grade like this EF-45, presents quite an opportunity for the gold eagle collector who is assembling an entire date and mint run. Pop 7; 17 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8630) Value $4,000 - UP

1904-O. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck with light even gold toning on both sides. This is a semi-key issue which is available in grades up to MS-63 or choice, but finding a specimen at the MS-64 or finer level and the numbers certified curtail significantly. Only a handful survive this nice, and as such bring a healthy premium for the strong eye appeal, clean surfaces and rich mint luster. A nice looking "O" Mint gold coin. Pop 18; 10 finer at PCGS.
