Brazil 80 Reis (1823-1831) on US Large Cent. PCGS graded AU-58. Glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of lighter reddish brown showing through in some of the protected areas. Perhaps this was a die trial or press set-up test strike for the 80 reis dies, or it may have been a whimsy by workers in the Brazilian mint. The diameter of the Brazil dies was significantly larger than the large cent so much of the legend from the Brazil piece is off the planchet. However a significant portion of the large cent is still visible, particularly the reverse which is under the "80" side of the overstrike. Based on the date range for the Brazil dies and the layout of the large cent reverse, the host large cent probably was dated between 1816 and 1823. Perhaps a very enterprising person could determine the date or variety of the host large cent. The PCGS label says the undertype cent is an 1823 N-2, which may be correct. We know of only one other example, a significantly lower grade piece that was struck over an 1820/19 N-1 large cent (see our sale of the Ted Naftzger middle date large cents, 2/1/2009, lot 476, that brought $488.75). The 80 Reis dies used on the Naftzger example were similar but not the same die variety as the ones used on this piece. Our grade is AU50. 1818 Quarter/Cent Pattern Judd-45 R8+. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty medium steel gray and silver with bluish steel tones in the protected areas. Just a few trivial handling marks including a tiny tick over the first 8 in the date. Essentially as struck. This "pattern" was struck over an 1860 Seated Liberty Quarter using salvaged dies: the obverse is from the 1818 Browning variety #2 quarter, the reverse is from the 1818 N-8 large cent variety. Ample undertype from the reverse of the 1860 quarter shows in the center of the obverse, and faint traces of the 1860 date on the quarter can be seen below TES at the top of the reverse. This piece was struck outside the mint, apparently during the 1860's, and it is unique. Noyes photo #61463. Previously housed in an NGC slab graded PF64. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only example graded. PCGS ID #12201. (PCGS # 12201) Value $15,000 - UP
