Lot 1529
1830. PCGS graded AU-53. Lightly toned and sharply struck with full definition on Liberty's uppermost curls and all of the eagle's feathers. Although a modest number were struck, survivors are quite rare today. This fact is due to the attempt by our government to fix the ratio of gold to silver when our coinage system was developed. Over time, silver or gold rises and falls, disrupting any similar fixed system. During this period, the price of gold rose relative to silver, and it became profitable to melt down gold coins simply for their bullion value. Hence, all old tenor gold coins that could be obtained were gathered up and melted for the profit. This continued until mid 1834 when there was an authorized adjustment downward of the quantity of gold in each denomination, eliminating any profit from melting down such coins. Not many examples survived from this era, and they are in high collector demand when offered. Popular type coin. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Only 4,540 struck, with about 80 to 100 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. Pop 4; 55 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7670) Value $10,000 - UP

1842-C. NGC graded AU-53. Mostly untoned. Some minor obverse marks but well struck by the dies with solid defintion on Liberty's curls, and the eagle's wings too, save for the left facing thigh being typically a bit soft. Scarce this nice in terms of grade, and rare any finer. A handsome example that will serve well to represent this elusive date and mint in any advanced collection. Only 6,729 struck. Pop 13; 20 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7724) Value $6,000 - 6,500

1842-D. PCGS graded AU-58. Untoned and well struck. A few obverse marks here and there as expected from brief circulation. Only 4,643 struck, with under 100 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. The 18 show faint repunching low on the date, and there is a fine spindely die crack up from the base of the reverse splitting the denomination up to the eagle's claw tip. An exceptional example of this elusive Dahlonega issue, and one that will be a highlight in any advanced collection. Pop 6; tied for the finest examples graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 7725) Value $12,000 - UP

Lot 1533
1846-D. NGC graded MS-62. This coin was struck with the same reverse die as the D over near D variety, but is the usually later die state where the originally mispunched mintmark is barely visible above the 1 of the fraction in the denomination. Glittering reflectivity as expected for a mint state example of this early Dahlonega issue, and the surfaces are satin smooth and appealing. The usual light die crack extends from the rim through the E of AMERICA down to the lower portion of the eagle's wing below. Boldly struck and untoned. Some mint luster evident. A condition rarity at this stellar grade level, and worthy of a strong bid. Only 19,303 struck. Pop 3; 3 finer, 2 in 63, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 7742) Value $10,000 - UP

1846-O. PCGS graded MS-61. Well struck with lovely light golden toning on both sides. The fields and devices have a decidedly satin smoothness to them, and are clearly well preserved since the time of issue. The devices are all bold, and the fields are clean in terms of handling. For identification a tiny nick is found just below the leading edge of the curl over Liberty's ear. Here is one of the finer examples of this date and mint to come down to us. Only 62,000 struck. Pop 12; 8 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7743) Value $4,500 - 5,000

1851-O. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC. PQ. This is a nice example of the dramatically repunched date, with the final 1 sharp, and well below the final 1 at an odd angle. This is not particularly rare, but does add a lot of charm to this scarce issue. A hint of gold tone. A lovely example that shows a good strike, clean surfaces and pleasing eye appeal. Pop 7; 5 finer, 4 in 63, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 7762) Value $4,000 - 4,200

1852-O. PCGS graded MS-61. CAC. PQ. A nice example of this date and mint. Some luster evident and the strike is solid for this issue. Lot 1539
1856-C. NGC graded MS-61. Here is one of the really scarce issues from the ever popular Charlotte Mint. The state of preservation is exceptional for an 1856-C quarter eagle, retaining full mint state quality and a good degree of eye appeal. Well struck and untoned. Let's not forget that we're talking about an 1856-C quarter eagle, which notably is always found on defective planchets, with small rough areas noted particularly on the reverse. The planchets were either poorly prepared in mixing the gold and copper alloy, or the planchet rolling mills were not properly cleaned leaving said rough patches in the fields of the coins struck. Thankfully any rough patches on the blank planchets were blended by the devices in those areas. A condition rarity in all grades of mint state, and seldom seen or offered this nice. Only 7,913 struck. Pop 8; 4 finer, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 7778) Value $8,000 - UP

Lot 1549
1908. PCGS graded Proof 65. PQ. Should be cracked out and regraded if you have a mind to, that or try for the gold bean of happiness. Housed in a First Generation Holder, which makes this a rarity in and of itself for a proof gold coin. The surfaces of this splendid gem are, of course, utterly perfect. For that is what it took to earn a PR-65 grade from the early days at PCGS. Only a few really gem 1908 quarter eagles were around at that time (1986-1989) this one was graded during the early days at PCGS. This is the first year of the new Bela Lyon Pratt incuse design, with the obverse showing the head of an Indian Chief, the reverse with a standing eagle. These new designs proved to be quite popular despite their totally inovative incuse designs--something never previously tried on coinage in America, and a great many were coined for circulation. Even these Proofs were ordered in larger numbers than seen previously for proofs, these new Indian designs with their matte finish and subtle tiny sparkling facets. Here is one of the finer examples known, and a coin worthy of the most advanced collection. Only 236 struck. Pop 28; 27 finer, 17 in 66, 3 in 66+, 7 in 67. (PCGS # 7957) Value $25,000 - UP

Lot 1553
1912. NGC graded Proof 64. A bright and attractive Proof struck in the lemon yellow hue and finely textured sandblast finish used to produce these Proofs. This date is nearly as tough to find as the 1913 or 1915 quarter eagles from this series. Struck in limited numbers and a rarity on the market, any offering of a 1912 Proof quarter eagle is worth noting! This one offers near gem surfaces, rich yellow gold color, sparkling minute facets when examined and bold visual appeal. From an historic standpoint, 1912 is known for the Titanic disaster when the transatlantic ship crossing record was in site only to be upended by a poorly placed iceburg on that fateful April night. Although many passengers survived, others were not so lucky, and maritime travel has been more closely examined and regulated ever since. Here is a gorgeous reminder of that date, a coin which has survived not only for over 100 years, but in spectacular condition as well. Only 197 struck. Pop 5; 42 finer at NGC.
