Lot 1186
1795. B-5, BB-27, Rarity 1. NGC graded AU-53. Well struck with nice even toning on both sides. The color is a classic silver-gray with lighter silver devices, deeper gray in the surrounding fields. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, with minimal signs of handling or circulation. There are a few shallow adjustments on Liberty's head and curls, one crossing through her neck, but these were mint imparted and commonly seen on these early silver dollars. The planchets had to be within a narrow weight tolerance, and it was easier to roll the silver ingots to make the planchets slightly heavy, and "adjust" (file) off the excess silver so the planchets would fit into the narrow band of weight allowed. Then once the coin was struck most if not all of the file or adjustment marks would be blended into the surfaces.

Here is a fine example of this practice, with just a few traces of the original file marks remaining, but what's important is the depth of Liberty's curls and all the wing feathers on the eagle, including many of his proud breast feathers are present. This is a two year type coin with the Flowing Hair design and one of the most popular of our early type coins. A tough issue to find this nice! Value $10,000 - UP

1796. Large date, small letters. B-5, BB-65, Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-53. Light hint of tone. Quite frosty and attractive, with considerable definition of Liberty's hair curls as well as many of the breast feathers on the eagle. This is a really tough coin to find this well preserved and technically sound. Most show far more wear after just weeks in circulation. The high points of the design, Liberty's uppermost curls behind her temple and the eagle's breast feathers wore away almost as these coins left the mint! Thus finding coins with strong definition like this is quite a treat. A condition rarity that should not be overlooked. Only 79,920 struck. Pop 4; 21 finer at PCGS. 1799. B-9, BB-166, Rarity 1. NGC graded MS-61. A very rare extremely early die state of BB-166, with a very faint trace of die crack below "1" in the date and almost no trace of the typical "Apostrophe" cracks on the reverse, therefore falling between Die States I & II in Dave Bower's Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. Nice even toning on both sides with ample mint frost and abundant eye appeal expected for a mint state coin. This die pairing went on to strike many silver dollars, but most show later states of deterioration in the dies. Always popular for the date in the 1700s. Pop 13; 66 finer at NGC. Value $14,000 - UP

1801. B-3, BB-213, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-62. Nice even light gold toning on both sides. This is an interesting die pairing, for the reverse incorporated the T punch with the broken serif at the base, where the right side has broken off the base. It appears three times in the reverse legend, all with the broken feature. Curiously the obverse T punch in LIBERTY is whole and does not have the missing serif. However, the missing serif T punch appears again in 1802 on the obverse of one die pairing! A rare and challenging coin to find this nice, and here is one of the finest seen. Dusky gray gold toning throughout, and impressive surfaces too. Only 54,454 struck. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. Value $20,000 - UP

1803. Large 3. B-6, BB-255, Rarity 2. CAC GOLD APPROVED. PCGS graded AU-55. PQ. A wonderful example and undergraded by PCGS. When sold by us in 1975, it was one of the finest known examples and described as About Mint State. Beautiful blue and golden toning. Just graded for the first time. This coin should be carefully viewed and assesed as the grading seems rather harsh given its charms and quality. The pedigree speaks for itself too. Pop 4; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 40101) Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

1857. NGC graded MS-64. A fully white example that offers bold eye appeal, a sharp strike and clean surfaces. The reverse shows a few faint adjustments on the upper left, where the planchet was too heavy and slightly filed down by the Mint prior to being struck. These trace lines often fade away but are sometimes still seen on mint-fresh uncirculated coins like this. A tough date to find at all, and rarely seen this nice. Only 94,000 struck. 1859. NGC graded Proof 65. Boldly struck with wonderful blue and golden smokey toning on both sides. The fields are glistening with reflectivity while the devices show elegant mint frost. Such toning comes from decades of careful storage, likely wrapped in tissue inside a small coin envelope. Clearly this coin was carefully preserved as only a handful would retain the gem grade today, and here is one of those! This is the first type as well, which is less plentiful in higher grades than the With Motto style which came about in 1866. This splendid gem, with its gorgeous toning will certainly be a treat to anyone who is lucky enough to purchase it. Only 800 struck. Pop 17; 30 finer at NGC. Value $8,500 - 9,000

1872-CC. PCGS graded MS-60. A hint of light tone that is fairly uniform on both sides. The strike is reasonably sharp with reflective fields on both sides. This is a low mintage date with only 3,150 struck. What is truly remarkable is that this date survives in rather large numbers relative to its mintage. Q. David Bowers, noted authority in numismatics wrote in his Silver Dollars Encyclopedia from 1993 that "Today, the number surviving is in the range of perhaps 150 to 200, including lower grades in the Good, VG and Fine ranges." CoinFacts, while using their immense grading data from the PCGS Population Report and the NGC Census have now estimated that perhaps as many as 400 examples of these 1872-CC silver dollars exist, over ten percent of the original mintage. Granted, the majority are in quite low grades, but this is a date that is available in well worn condition. In high grades, like this Mint State coin, the rarity is notably less than a few dozen known. Pop 2; 10 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6969) Value $14,000 - UP

1873. PCGS graded MS-65. Nicely toned with classic silver-gray hues, deeper tones to accent the devices, lighter hues in the fields. The strike is sharp throughout, with bold definition on Liberty's hair and dress folds, as well as on the eagle's finer feather definition. A classic gem and first year of issue of the Trade Dollar. These were authorized by the Congress in 1873 to be used as trade coins in the Orient primarily, but many ended up in circulation here in the states. Curiously the mood changed by 1879, and Trade dollars faded away only to see production as limited edition Proofs. Meanwhile the new Morgan style silver dollar was launched in 1878, and became a major force in our circulating coins for nearly 80 years hence. Pop 12; 6 finer, 1 in 65+, 4 in 66, 1 in 67. 1874-CC. PCGS graded MS-64+. A lovely white coin with a touch of gold tone near the obverse rim, similar on the reverse where bright satin luster dominates, with some delicate toning on the extreme edge. The surfaces are excellent, with just a few light scattered marks seen when closely examined. Very close to MS-65, and a condition rarity at this grade level. Despite a generous mintage, there are only a half dozen PCGS coins at this grade or finer of this issue. Far and away the vast majority of these were shipped off to the Orient, as was intended with their issue, where they entered and stayed in circulation for many years, with reports of these being seen as late as the 1940s still in use in the Orient. This majestic coin clearly escaped that fate and has been carefully preserved since its time of issue. Pop 2; 4 finer, 3 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 7035) Value $20,000 - UP

1875-S. PCGS graded MS-65+. A nice frosty white coin that retains incredible mint luster and abundant eye appeal. The surfaces are majestic, with just a dash of golden tone accents, and the wide open fields show scarcely any signs of handling. This is most extraordinary for Trade dollar as these tended not to be so perfectly preserved, and this is borne out by the population numbers which show how few are known in these gem grades. An exceptional coin that commands respect and deserves a high place in any advanced collection. Pop 3; 11 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7039) Value $6,500 - UP

1876-S. PCGS graded MS-64. PQ. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides of the most extraordinary colors with a perfect bullseye pattern, headlight white centers, crimson and gold sunset next, deeper blue, green and finishing out with lemon gold around the rims--incredibly so on both sides. It would be hard to imagine a more attractive toned Trade dollar than this coin, destined to be a major conversation piece wherever it is shown. A simply stunning piece and a great looking coin. We anticipate this coin bring a modest premium over bid (sarcasm). In my 40 years of cataloging rare coins, this might well be the most beautiful toned coin that has passed through my hands. Recently graded for the first time and should be re-graded.Pop 117; 18 finer, 9 in 64+, 8 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 7043) Value $1,700 - 1,800

1877-CC. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and lightly toned for this popular Carson City issue. The strike is sharp on all the devices and mintmark is bold. Most of these were shipped overseas to the orient as intended by their design. Hence, few were left behind to circulate, in fact these Trade dollars were circulated in the United States but often at a discount to the face value, some stores even refusing to take them at all. A popular and desirable example of this late issue date and mint. Attractive for the grade. Pop 31; 19 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7045) Value $6,000 - 6,500

1878-S. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC. PQ. Mostly white with light golden toning around the periphery. This is a well struck, well preserved coin which will please any type collector. For some reason the San Francisco Mint went into high production mode in 1878 for these Trade dollars, striking over 4 million of them as this series was being discontinued for circulation. Here is one of the nicer examples to survive today. Records from the Orient note that these were in circulation there clear up into the 1950s, thus serving their intended purpose as well as anyone could have hoped for. Housed in an Old Green Holder. 1879. PCGS graded Proof 65. Attractive rose-purple and blue toning on both sides that spans the entire surface, from generations of careful storage. The Trade dollar was pretty much on its last legs when 1879 rolled around. The new Morgan silver dollar was taking over the production runs at the various mints starting in 1878, but for the Trade dollar, proofs were still produced in diminishing quantities from 1879 through 1885. Here is a lovely gem that will satisfy any advanced specialist for both its elegant toning and gem quality surfaces. Only 1,541 struck. Pop 39; 31 finer, 3 in 65+, 22 in 66, 6 in 67.
