Lot 1047
1796 Draped Bust Dime. JR-6, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck with lovely light natural toning on both sides, Nice reflective surfaces on both sides. A lovely first year type coin that was only struck in 1796 and 1797. The obverse depicts Liberty facing right with her long flowing curls. The reverse shows a small eagle perched on some clouds, surrounded by a wreath of palm and olive branches. While a number of these were saved as the first of their kind, locating a high end coin like this always requires some patience. Thin die cracks are noted when carefully examined, all as struck. An important offering for the advanced specialist who needs an example of this type. Pop 1; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. Value $35,000 - UP

Lot 1048
1796. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. JR-3, Rarity-5. This is tough die pairing along with being a beautiful choice coin for the specialist or type collector. The surfaces are mostly bright silver with a with reflective fields and nice light gold tone. Boldly struck throughout, with strong curl definition on Liberty and all of the eagle's wing feathers clear, with nearly all of the breast feathers sharp and clear as well. A small retained cud is noted above the first T of STATES to the rim, this is seen on just a handful of coins from these dies. A remarkable example of this first year of issue of the dime denomination, and a coin that would make a welcome addition to any advanced colleciton. Only 22,135 struck. Pop 15; 26 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4461) Value $28,000 - 30,000

Lot 1049
1809. JR-1, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-64. This is one of the most sought after dates in the entire Capped Bust dime series. It is the first year that the new John Reich design was used on deimes, after being successfully launched on other denominations in copper, gold and silver. The obverse shows a handsome head of Liberty facing left, with stars surrounding and date below. Liberty wears a cap which is inscribed LIBERTY. For the reverse a standing eagle is central with wings outstretched. Mint Engraver Reich anticipated higher coinage of this denomination in 1809, as he engraved two obverse dies and at least one reverse in 1809. However, the mintage of 51,065 for 1809 dimes was entirely struck from a single die pair. The other obverse die was later overdated and used to strike the entire 1811/09 dime production of 65,000 coins. It is interesting to note that the reverse die from 1809 continued in service and struck all the 1811 dimes as well, with a total mintage of over 116,000 pieces. The reverse die literally fell apart at the end of the 1811 dime production. For this stellar 1809 dime, the surfaces are a delight, and the eye appeal strong. Well struck and quite frosty. Only 51,065 struck. Pop 4; 4 finer in 65. Value $8,000 - UP

1830, 30 over 29. PCGS graded MS-66. JR-4, Rarity-2. Here is an extraordinary coin. The strike is sharp throughout and the surfaces are virtually pristine, with no signs of handling or cleaning. Lovely rainbow toning on the obverse while the reverse shows light golden toning favoring the rims. Close examination will find just a trace of the overdate feature, as the engraver did an excellent job masking the prior 1829 date on this unused 1829 obverse die before tapping in the 30 date over the old 29. One of the finer examples of this popular issue and worthy of a bold bid. Prooflike fields on both sides. Pop 2; 2 finer in 67. (PCGS # 4519) Value $20,000 - UP

1831. NGC graded MS-64. JR-6, Rarity-3. This is a somewhat scarcer die pairing and quite a respectible example of the date as well. The toning is deeper at the rims and while the center is lighter with blue and somewhat dark toning on both sides. Boldly struck throughout and an early die state. The surfaces are satin smooth and free of any distracting marks or nicks. An excellent choice for the collector who wants quality and eye appeal. Pop 44; 48 finer at NGC. Value $1,800 - 1,900

1837. No Stars. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely blue toning with reflective fields. This is the first appearance of the new Gobrecht designs for this denomination. A tiny obverse mark in the left field is old and toned over. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are fresh. This new design lasted only two short years, and by mid 1838 stars were added to the obverse. The addtion of the stars helped to protect the open fields and extend the wear patterns of the devices through prolonged years in circulation. Housed in an Early Style Holder. Pop 27; 38 finer at NGC. Value $4,500 - 5,000

Lot 1053
1837 Lg Date. No Stars. PCGS graded Proof 63. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck with lovely well matched blue toning on both sides. Very popular coin as this is a short lived type, with the No Stars obverse seen only in late 1837 until the opening months of 1838. Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht adopted Thomas Sully's design of Liberty seated on a rock and holding a pole with the cap of freedom at the top. The reverse design was a simple open laurel wreath with fruit, ONE / DIME at the center, and surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. To celebrate this new design perhaps 25 to 30 were struck in Proof, and this is one of those prized examples. Pop 7; 13 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4718) Value $8,500 - 9,000

1858. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. PQ. The holder shows some scratches and the coin looks almost perfect. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Outstanding quality and rather deeply toned as sometimes seen on these early proof coins. The strike is bold and precise, with all the definition crisply defined on both sides. This is a highly desirable example of this elusive, low mintage proof coin. Only 300 or so struck, with about 50 to 70 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. Pop 5; 3 finer, 2 in 66 Cameo, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 4747) Value $5,000 - UP

Lot 1056
1858. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. CAC. PQ. Around 300 proofs issued. Boldly struck and mostly untoned. Less than 70 known in proof today. Among the finest known today from this challenging and popular issue. The stars and Miss Liberty's hair are very sharp. PCGS has not graded any coins of this date and denomination in the Deep Cameo category, making this lovely Cameo coin one of the finest seen. Proof coin production was starting to take off in the late 1850s, due to growing collector demand. Things slowed down considerably during the Civil War (1861 to 1865) with many denomations showing mintages below 500 pieces. Today these issues are highly collectible and many are quite rare. Pop 1; 3 finer in PRCA, 1 in 65+, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 84747) Value $4,000 - 4,500

1859. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC. PQ. Wonderful pastel toning on both sides, some marks on the holder. The colors range from light gold to a pale greenish gray through the stars, well matched and a trfile deeper on the reverse. The fields are pristine, and the devices show eye pleasing frost which is undisturbed by time or handling. It is important to note that the with stars obverse seen here (1840-1860) was changed starting in 1860 to include the legend instead, which keeps demand quite high on these 1859 and earlier proofs from type and date collectors. An incredible coin and technically tied for the finest graded by PCGS. Only 800 struck. Pop 1; 4 finer in 67 Cameo. (PCGS # 4748) Value $5,000 - UP

1859. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. Boldly struck and fully white with nice contrast between the mirror fields and frosted devices. At this lofty grade level, there are just a handful of coins that are technically any finer, and quite a few that fall well short of the quality seen here. This is a far scarcer type coin in gem grades than many realize, as the obverse has the stars surrounding Liberty, and in 1860 the obverse was changed to display the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA instead. Hence this is one of the scarcer type coins to find in proof. A wonderful example. Only 800 struck. Pop 6; 9 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 84748) Value $4,500 - 5,000

1859-S. NGC graded AU-55. This is one of the toughest Liberty Seated dimes to find in any grade. The mintage dribbled to a halt after a mere 60,000 were struck, of course small change was still in great demand out west, where the gold rush was still underay. Hence, these early San Francisco dimes were in hard service and use for many years. How this one survived in such high grade is unknown but we're glad it did as any collector will long be proud of this prized condition rarity. The surfaces are attractive, untoned and well struck. Pop 3; 2 finer in 62. Value $5,000 - UP

1872-CC. NGC graded AU-55. Fully white, softly struck around the right obverse legend on OF AMER which is opposite a thicker portion of the reverse wreath. Only 35,480 struck, and this is one of the truly tough dates to find for collectors of this series. Rarely are these early Carson City dimes found this nice and approaching mint condition. A prize that is destined for an advanced collection where it will be long treasured. This is one of the top graded examples today, and a condition rarity that will highlight any advanced collection. Pop 3; tied for the finest examples graded at NGC. Value $15,000 - UP

1880. NGC graded MS-67. Star. Fully white with mirror fields on both sides and just a blush of pale gold around the rims. The centers are fully white and well forsted. A low mintage issue due ot the fact that most of the coins hoarded during the Civil War came flooding back into circulation in 1879 when the premium for gold over paper dollars finally reverted and could be exchanged at equal value, hence demand for new coins fell dramatically. Low mintage date of 36,000 struck. Pop 1; 5 finer, 2 in 68, 3 in 68 Star. Value $1,500 - 1,600

1889-S. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC. Frosty and lightly toned with a blend of silver gray and lighter golden gray shades. The strike is decent for this late Liberty Seated San Francisco date, with partial curl separation on Liberty's head, and good defintion on the wreath spanning the reverse. Another condition rarity, unsurpassed and highly desirable. Pop 3; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. (PCGS # 4703) Value $4,000 - UP

Scarce at the gem grade level, with just a few seen that can favorably compare. Well struck. Barber dimes in choice to gem grades offer a lot of bang for the buck to collectors today, they are truly difficult to find for most of the mintmarked dates, and are not fully appreciated for the their beauty, rarity and history. One of the many challenging dates to the immensely popular series, and a coin that will no doubt see considerable attention when it crosses the auction block for its quality and eye appeal. 1875. PCGS graded Proof 65. PQ. Lovely blue toning on both sides. Nicely struck and popular as a first year type coin with a scant 2,790 pieces struck in proof. The Twenty-cent piece was a most unusual denomination, given we had dimes and quarters already in production at that time. Furthermore, the Twenty-cent piece only lasted for two years as a production coin, and four years in the proof format terminating in 1878. At the gem level, these are undeniably rare and important, as demand from type collectors is substantial for this high quality. Pop 19; 14 finer; 1 in 65+; 12 in 66; 1 in 67.
