Lot 1034
1795. PCGS graded UNC Details, Cleaned. Well struck and untoned with light silver gray dominating the patina. The surfaces are free of any detracting marks, and while this coin was cleaned long time ago, the overall appeal is still present. The fields are semi prooflike. Only 78,660 struck (PCGS # 4251) Value $2,500 - UP

1796. "LIKERTY". PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned and boldly struck. No, that's not strong enough, this coin is struck like a medal, with full separation on Liberty's hair, each and every strand. Furthermore, the eagle has all his proud breast feathers! How many Draped Bust, Small Eagle coins can offer a breast full of feathers--yeah, about none, they just don't come with more than a few shallow feather outlines. Here the dies were such that somehow the eagle actually has a full chest of proud breast feathers! Considering how thin these tiny half dime planchets are, the coiner must have really swung the arm of the coining press to get the breast feathers this fully struck as both the central obverse and central reverse had to be sharp. A trace of softness is noted on the upper right wreath of the reverse, this area is opposite Liberty's bust, certainly a challenge to get the entire coin sharp with such a small planchet and so much detail to press into the planchet. Excellent surfaces and eye appeal, and free of adjustment marks or any sort of handling issue. An extraordinary and sparkling jewel that will forever be remembered by any numismatist who has searched for a well struck example of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle coinage for a type, date or variety collection. A great looking coin. Only 10,230 struck. Pop 5; 3 finer, 1 in 65, 1 in 67, 1 in 67+. (PCGS # 4254) Value $35,000 - 40,000

1800. NGC graded MS-65. Wonderful even silver gray toning on both sides. Boldly struck on each of the devices, with full definition on Liberty's hair and the reverse is sharp throughout as well. Clean surfaces as expected for the gem grade level and a simply outstanding example of this issue. The fields are free of all but the most minute sighs on contact, and the full dentils serve to frame the designs with perfect centering. Minor signs of die clashing in the field, commonly seen on this issue, and the usual minor die chip is found below the 00 of the date on the rim, most examples from these dies show this feature. An important and desirable offering. Only 24,000 struck. Pop 8; 3 finer, 2 in 66, 1 in 67. Value $25,000 - UP

Lot 1037
1801. NGC graded AU-55. This is a prized condition rarity at this lofty grade level. The surfaces show classical steel gray fields which offset the slightly lighter devices on both sides. Close scrutiny will marvel at the complete and full definition on Liberty's curls as well as the finer details of the feathers imparted to the eagle's outspread wings. A few faint surface hairlines are noted from long ago circulation, and we note that portions of the dentils on the obverse and reverse are softly impressed by the dies, and this is diagnostic to this particular variety (nearly always seen as such). There are no deep or distracting marks on the surfaces. Due to their diminuitive size, these half dimes are rarely found today in any condition to grade by the third party grading services, most are damaged from careless handling long ago, and no doubt the majority were simply lost during their years of service in circulation. Here is one of the nicest 1801 half dimes certified, and a desirable coin worthy of any advanced collection. Mostly untoned. Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 5 finer at NGC. Value $8,000 - UP

1837. No Stars, Small Date. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with light golden toning on both sides. A pleasing type coin with all the hallmarks desired by collectors; eye appeal, rarity and a proven track record. These tiny half dimes were the first appearance of the new Gobrecht design for this denomination, and they proved quite popular. Stars were added to the obverse design the follwing year, so this 1837 style became a very short-lived type coin. And a handsome example it is! Pop 29; 25 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4312) Value $1,900 - 2,000
