Lot 128
1808 S-277 R2. PCGS graded MS-62+ Brown. Lustrous tan and light brown blending to light chocolate on the highpoints. Peeps of faded mint red remain visible in protected areas on the reverse and this cent has mint state eye appeal. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a couple tiny ticks on the bust and a few more at the 1 in the date. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip at the dentil tips below the end of the wreath stem (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state VII. The die cracks at the D in UNITED and sinking at STAT are strong, and the first star is completely missing as a result. In addition there is a raised retained cud nestled between the two cracks inside the D. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20291. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#7. Our grade is AU58. A great example of this popular die state (many claimed to be the "12-Star" die state have a weak but partially visible first star; see the following lot). The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 36457) Value $14,000 - UP

1808 S-277 R2. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Lustrous tan and light chocolate brown. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has great eye appeal. Nearly flawless; a microscopic planchet fissure between the feet of the E & R in AMERICA can help identify this cent. The obverse looks solidly mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the wreath. LDS, Breen state VIII, with a small internal cud break inside the D in UNITED and a narrow but clearly defined rim cud break over that N. Star 1 is weak due to sinking at STAT but it is still visible. Graded AU55 Choice and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #21518. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#7 in his census. Our grade is AU58. (This cent has been graded as high as MS65 in prior auctions; a testament to its great eye appeal.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1808 S-278 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. The obverse is mix of frosty light brown, chocolate, and olive brown tones. The reverse is frosty darker olive. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent in spite of the uneven toning. Just a few tiny marks including a microscopic chip on star 1 (as struck) and a few light marks around stars 1 & 2. EDS, Breen state I, with crisp dentils below the date and smooth fields. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20636. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#7. Our grade is MS60. 1808 S-279 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Beautiful, highly lustrous bluish steel and medium olive brown. Mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are four tiny ticks near the dentil tips left of the date and a faint spot of darker toning (not carbon) at the top of the C in CENT. Sharply struck with complete radial lines in all the stars and crisp details on all the devices. A wonderful Classic Head cent. This is the plate coin for the variety in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy and in the 1991 Noyes reference on the early date large cents. Graded MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors with a relatively mushy late die state example in the Noyes census, his photo #20279. Bland says MS61 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS63. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. There are two tiny spots of darker olive brown toning (not carbon) in the field above the front of the head. The only contact marks, and they are trivial, are a fine hairline scratch well hidden in the toning on the jawline over the throat and a tiny tick at the dentil tips below the 0 in the date. The reverse is flawless except for a tiny tick under the left side of the O in ONE. MDS with fine radial die flowlines in the fields and weakening dentils on both sides. The 10 over 09 overdate is clearly visible to the unaided eye. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #32116. Bland says MS64 and CC#1 as well. Our grade is MS64. 1810 S-283 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Very attractive lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mint red remaining visible on the obverse and at least 15% of the reverse showing original mint color. A beautiful cent with only a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a small planchet flake in the field before the mouth (as struck), a very faint horizontal hairline on the cheek, a thin diagonal nick very well hidden in the hair under the Y in LIBERTY, and a small spot of darker toning (not carbon) at the dentil tips under star 11. None of these marks is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. LDS, Breen state IV. The dies are worn and flowlined and there is a clearly defined rim cud break from star 5 to star 6. Graded MS61 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#1, his photo #39130. Only 2 mint state examples have been recorded in either census. Our grade is MS63. The late die state may be seen as a negative factor because the finer details on the dies are weakened but the amount of mint color remaining visible is a big plus. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36478) Value $25,000 - UP

A dull nick on the eyelash, a few microscopic ticks on the front edge of the nose, and a puff of microscopic reddish carbon over the E in ONE are the notable marks. Nicely struck M-LDS, Breen state III, with dull die clashmarks in the field before the face. Struck slightly off center to K-7 leaving some of the dentils off the planchet, but all the devices are clear. Graded MS62 Choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #29850. 1810 Private Restrike in Tin Judd-41 R8. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. Frosty bright steel and gray. The only defect is a small area of very light corrosion on the rim at star 3 and a thin planchet crease on the rim over the first T in STATES (as struck). Only two examples are known struck with both an obverse and reverse, but a couple uniface impressions are known. The obverse die was used on the 1810 S-285 variety and the reverse is from the 1820 N-12 (same as used on the 1804 private restrikes). Both dies were heavily lapped to remove rust that accumulated after these dies were discarded as scrap metal. This example is clearly the finer of the two known pieces; the other piece is damaged with multiple rim cuts. Struck on a rather thin planchet (either tin or white metal alloy) that weighs 114.0 grains. This piece is plated in the Breen encyclopedia and the 2003 Whitman update of the Judd book on US pattern coinage. Noyes photo #61455. Our grade is MS60. Comes with a provenance than has been traced back well over a century. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only example graded. 1811/10 S-286 R3 Overdate 11 over 10. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. Choice lustrous light chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas and very faded mint red showing in the protected areas on the reverse. A sharp, nearly flawless cent that has just a light touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable mark is a small rim nick at star 1. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, without any die clashmarks. The overdate feature is bold. Graded AU50 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #20326. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2. Your cataloger has had the pleasure of cataloging the three top examples of this variety, and in my opinion this is the finest of that group and it's the only piece with any mint color remaining. Our grade is AU58, same as the PCGS grade. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference and it comes with a very nice provenance. 1811 S-287 R2. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Beautiful lustrous light bluish steel and olive with frosty mint red covering 10% of the obverse and 20% of the reverse. The only notable marks are a few tiny spots of darker reddish brown oxidation under star 1, a microscopic speck of similar toning under the end of the wreath stem, and another over the O in ONE. These tiny specks are not significant and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. MDS, Breen state III late. The fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines and the dentils left of stars 2 & 4 are failing, but there are no rim cuds in those places. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20009. Bland says MS64 and CC#2 behind an example that has been downgraded to net AU55 by Noyes for questionable color (the D. Brent Pogue PCGS MS65RD coin, Stack's Bowers/Sotheby's 3/2017:5135 that brought $493,500). This is the Noyes plate coin for the variety in his 1991 reference on the early date large cents. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65. A superb example worthy of the finest collection. (Note: This cent was in a PCGS holder graded MS65RB when submitted for reholdering to add the Sheldon variety attribution and Doug Bird provenance to the label, so we suspect is it on the borderline for the RB designation.) 1814 S-294 R1 Crosslet 4. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous golden tan and light chocolate with hints of light bluish steel overtones in protected areas. The only contact marks are a tiny tick on the nostril and a small planchet flake right of the nostril, and neither mark is visible without the aid of a strong glass. Traces of an old fingerprint show in the field at stars 4-7 and 8-10, and there is a small spot under the T in UNITED. Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye appeal remains excellent. M-LDS, Breen state II. There are faint die clashmarks at the throat and a raised ridge over TES-OF-A. Not seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; 2 finer: 1 in 63+, 1 in 65+. (PCGS # 36520) Value $12,500 - UP

Lot 150
1814 S-295 R1 Plain 4. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints with nearly half the original bright mint color remaining on both sides. The "reddest" 1814 we have seen retaining more original mint color than any 1814 of either variety in the Noyes census. Would be a gem if not for some wisps of darker toning (not carbon) on the left side of the obverse and tiny specks of similar toning on both sides. The only trace of carbon is a small spot nestled inside the bottom of the N in ONE. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and there are no contact marks. E-MDS, Breen state IV, with a fine die crack that arcs from star 11 through the lowest curl to the left top of the 8. Our grade is MS64, same as the PCGS assessment. A wonderful 1814 cent. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only RB graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36518) Value $40,000 - UP
