1855 N-9 R1 Italic 55 with Knob-on-Ear PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous light steel brown with underlying mellowed mint red showing in the fields and protected areas. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highpoints of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The best identifying mark, and it is barely visible, is a speck of darker toning at the junction of the forelock and front edge of the coronet. MDS, die state e. The "Knob" break at the top of the ear is fully formed and sticks out quite a bit, and the branch under the Y is outlined by die cracks but has not yet started to rise. A wonderful example of this very popular "Redbook" variety. It appears the folks at PCGS may have been a bit "tight" on this one. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#3 honors in the Grellman census. 1855 N-11 R6- Italic 55 PCGS Proof, Unc Detail Spot Removed. A very sharp cent but the obverse was lightly cleaned long ago, possibly to remove a couple spots, and it has retoned light olive with hints of reddish steel in protected areas. The reverse is a more natural olive and bluish steel with medium brown toning on the devices. The reverse fields are nicely reflective while the fields on the obverse are only slightly reflective thanks to the old cleaning. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet flake on the rim above the second T in STATES. Our grade is Proof-55. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. The notable ones are two tiny ticks at the chin, another in the hair above the B, and a thin horizontal nick under EN in CENT. MDS, die state b, with a faint die crack at ME in AMERICA. 1856 N-9 R3 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous steel brown and light olive with at least 10% of the planchet showing mint red. No spots, stains, or notable contact marks. A tiny diagonal struck-through line right of the upper point of star 13 is the best identifying mark, and you need a strong glass to see it. M-LDS, die state d, with numerous die cracks on the reverse. There are a few very tiny low spots on the neck, as struck. The doubled die feature on the obverse is obvious, especially on the eyelid and the lowest curl on the neck (a real doubled die, not machine doubling). A very nice example of this variety. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. Value $650 - UP

1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty light olive brown and bluish steel with mellowed mint red in some of the protected areas on both sides. No spots or stains, but there are small lint marks in the field before the neck and mouth (created by lint or other fine debris on the die). In addition there is a shallow low spot covering the field from star 9 down to below star 11 (as struck). The reverse is essentially flawless except for minor strike weakness on the leaves under STATES. E-MDS, die state b. The strong die line down from the O in ONE is dull but clearly visible. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. Previously housed in a PCGS holder graded MS62RB (PCGS label #1920.62/9219745). 1856 N-16 R2+ PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown on the highpoints with about two-thirds of the mint color remaining visible. There are some tiny specks of darker toning (not carbon) scattered over both sides. A spot under the E in ONE can help identify this cent. The only other notable mark is a nick-like planchet chip in the dentils over the right side of star 8 (as struck). MDS, die state b. The earlier die lines under the 18 are gone (Newcomb's old #15). A very nice cent. Our grade is MS63+, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. And this example has more mint color than any other example in his census.
