1853 N-28 R3+ PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty light olive and steel with a puff of darker olive and steel toning at the right top of the reverse. No contact marks, just a few small spots of darker toning scattered over both sides. A small spot on top of the C in CENT can help identify this cent. LDS, die state c, with flowlined fields and weakness on the top of the 8 caused by die wear. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 5 finer: 3 in 64, 2 in 65. Value $300 - UP

1853 N-29 R3- PCGS graded MS63 Red. Frosty mint red fading to light steel brown with about 70% of the original mint red remaining. There are traces of an old fingerprint on the obverse and a glass reveals some kind of residue in protected areas on both sides. Apparently the residue was not significant enough to keep the PCGS graders from assigning a high grade to this cent. MDS, die state b. The die lines from the dentils at stars 1 & 2 are dull but visible. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. This is the only example of the variety given a RED grade at either service. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; the only MSRD example graded at both services for the variety. Value $975 - UP
