1849 N-2 R1 MS60. Lustrous medium steel brown and chocolate with traces of mellowed mint red on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and it would be choice if not for two obvious planchet flakes in the dentils at stars 1 & 2. Otherwise a small spot of darker toning midway between the chin and star 2 is the only notable mark. E-MDS, die state i, with crumbling on berry 4 but no crumbling inside the top of the E in CENT. 1849 N-16 R5 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Frosty medium brown and light olive with traces of very faded mint color showing in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck with just a hint of friction on the highpoints, but there are a few contact marks on the obverse. The notable ones are a few very light diagonal scratches or long nicks on the cheek, a diagonal nick on the rim under the 4, and a nick in the dentils above star 10. The reverse is free of marks and it looks mint state. EDS, die state a, with swelling inside the bottom of the 9 but no crumbling. A decent example of this tough die variety. 1849 N-18 R6 PCGS graded Proof-62 Brown. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and olive with steel overtones on the reverse. Sharply struck and free of spots or stains. The only marks are microscopic hairlines on both sides. The best identifying mark is a microscopic planchet chip on the rim below the end of the wreath ribbon (as struck). The mirrors in the obverse fields are deep while the reflectivity on the reverse is more subdued, as always on this variety. A nice example of this proof-only variety. Our grade is Proof-60. The only marks are some darker toning at the E in LIBERTY, a speck of carbon left of star 9, and a puff of darker brown toning between the date and star 13. The reverse is flawless. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #6). The die lines from the curls are gone. A very nice cent with a lot of mint color remaining. Our grade is MS64+.
