Lot 84
1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Very attractive glossy light to medium brown with darker chocolate brown and steel toning on the highpoints of the devices. Mellowed mint red shows in protected areas on the obverse and about 20% of the reverse retains some faded mint color. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only notable marks are a vertical nick in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon, a pair of nick-like planchet chips on the bottom of the neck and bust (as struck), and a couple very faint hairlines on the cheek. MDS, Breen state IV, with strong die clashmarks at LIBERTY and a single die crack on the reverse. Graded MS60 and finest known by a full 10 points in the Noyes census, his photo #21750. Bland says MS61 and finest known as well. Our grade is MS60+. This is the stand-alone finest example of the very popular 3-error reverse variety; a must-have for the finest "Registry" collection. The reverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy to illustrate the 3-Error Reverse, and both sides are plated in the 1991 Noyes reference on early date large cents. A highlight of this fabulous collection, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36272) Value $175,000 - UP

1801 S-221 R2 Corrected Denominator 100 over 000. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with traces of very faded mint red showing on the reverse. Sharply struck with smooth, very slightly reflective fields on both sides thanks to a fresh die polishing. A beautiful cent, free of any spots or stains and showing only a few trivial contact marks. The notable ones are a couple light ticks in the field over the hair ribbon, a tiny rim nick over the L in LIBERTY, and a diagonal tick or chip over the left top of the T in CENT. E-MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks on both sides but no crumbling in the dentils at F-A. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety in his 2000 large cent encyclopedia. Graded MS60 and CC#1 as the only mint state example in the Noyes census, his photo #20949. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS62. Arguably the finest example of this popular "Redbook" variety, and the Corrected Denominator error is obvious to the unaided eye. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36284) Value $25,000 - UP

1801 S-222 R1. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Lustrous medium steel and light chocolate brown. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has excellent eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Just a few trivial marks; a planchet chip touching the leaf under the O in OF and a thin planchet void down from the right side of that F (both as struck) can help identify this cent. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a narrow rim cud over IB in LIBERTY and die clashmarks from dentils through all those letters. The strike is weak on the right half of both sides, a common feature for this variety. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21118. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is AU58. Comes with a great provenance that has been traced back well over 100 years. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen large cent encyclopedia. Both sides were plated in the 1879 Frossard monograph and the obverse is plated in the 1925 Newcomb reference on the cents of 1801-1803. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36251) Value $10,000 - UP

1801 S-223 R1 Error Fraction 1/000. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Highly lustrous light olive and steel brown with mellowed mint red in protected areas on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is superb. The best identifying marks are a puff of lighter reddish tan toning on the neck and a micro-speck of darker toning in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon. M-LDS, Breen state V, with a strong cud break at RT in LIBERTY and a narrow rim cud over IB. Some of the leaves in the wreath are softly struck but the devices on the obverse are quite sharp. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 as the only truly mint state example of the variety in the Noyes census, his photo #21000. Bland says MS63 and CC#1 in his census. Our grade is MS65 Choice. This is the Noyes plate coin for the variety. Recently submitted for reholdering while in a PCGS holder graded MS65RB (PCGS green label #1459.65/7423523), but apparently too much of the mint color has faded away to retain the "RB" designation. Comes with a superior provenance that is unbroken for nearly 150 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36278) Value $60,000 - UP

Fine satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots, stains, or planchet defects. Essentially flawless. The best identifying mark is an extremely faint hairline parallel with the bottom of the L in LIBERTY. EDS+, Breen state I, with die clashmarks on both sides but without the rim break at AME. Graded MS60 and finest known in the Noyes census as the only truly mint state example of the die variety, his photo #33741. Bland says AU55 and CC#1. Our grade is MS60+ and a good argument could be made for an even higher grade. This is the plate coin for the variety in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy. Another great cent with a superb provenance. 1802 S-225 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Frosty light olive and steel brown with a few tiny peeps of very faded mint color showing in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Smooth and attractive with just a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a puff of darker olive brown toning at the dentil tips before the chin, a few dull ticks on the bust (not to be confused with the die clashmarks in the same area), and a small spot of fine reddish carbon at the ribbon left of the numerator. MDS, Breen state III, with strong die clashmarks on and around the bust and fine die cracks on the reverse, but the rim cud break under the date has not formed. There is a strong double profile on the jaw (caused by die bounce or shift during the strike). Graded MS62 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21167. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#5. 1803 S-243 R2 Stemless Wreath, Doubled Fraction Bar. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. CAC. Lustrous mix of mint red and light bluish steel brown blending to light olive. About 20% of the obverse and nearly a third of the reverse show mint color, and this cent has fabulous eye appeal. The surfaces are satiny and the only marks are a pair of closely spaced nicks in the field over the bust. No spots, stains, or planchet flaws. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II. Most of the earlier clashmarks over ERICA have been lapped off the die but the rim break right of TY in LIBERTY has not formed. Another superb cent in this great collection. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #33400. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1 in his census. Our grade is MS64+. The slightly finer example in the Noyes census and the equally fine piece in the Bland census (same coin) was offered as lot 186 in our 9/2008 sale of cents from the estate of R. E. Naftzger, Jr., and it realized $241,500. Difficult to estimate where bidding will end on this one. A superb example of the Stemless Wreath Doubled Fraction Bar variety of 1803. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer and 1 of only 2 RB graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36420) Value $80,000 - UP

1803 S-245 R3. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Lustrous tan and light steel brown faded down from original mint color with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highest points of the design. No spots or stains, and the only notable marks are a couple microscopic planchet flakes near the dentils left of the lower curls, as struck, a tiny nick in the field right of these flakes, and a faint horizontal hairline of darker steel toning from the ear to the upper lip. Satiny mint luster covers everything but the very highest points of the design on both sides. Terminal die state, Breen state III, with a strong cud break at RICA plus another small but strong one over the left top of the N in UNITED. In addition, there is a clear, continuous double profile from the forehead down to the chin (machine doubling from die bounce or shift). Called MS65 choice and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #21502. Bland says MS61 and tied for finest known honors. Our grade is MS63. 1803 S-246 R3 "Mumps" Obverse. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. Choice frosty medium brown and chocolate with a puff of reddish brown toning between the E & R in LIBERTY. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only notable marks are a vertical scratch well hidden in the hair at the back of the head, a collection of microscopic ticks on the neck, and a small planchet chip at the end of the wreath stem right of the fraction (as struck). Well struck EDS, Breen state I, with die clashmarks on both sides but before the small lump formed on the bottom of the jaw (the so-called "Mumps" defect). Graded EF45 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21744. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#2 behind the slightly finer example that is permanently secured in the ANS collection. 1803 S-247 R3 "Mumps" Obverse. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of faded mint color showing on the obverse. The surfaces are perfectly smooth but there are a few marks. These include a puff of dark olive brown toning in the field off the end of the nose, another at the ends of the hair ribbon, a rim bruise opposite the neck, and a trail of microscopic ticks from the L into the hair above the ribbon. Otherwise this cent is choice and the reverse is flawless. E-MDS, Breen state I, with an uncracked reverse. The "Mumps" break at the throat and the clashed arc of dentils through the denominator are strong. Graded AU55 Choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21380. 1803 S-248 R4 "Mumps" Obverse. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous tan and light steel brown blending to light chocolate on the highpoints. Mellowed mint red covers about 10% of the reverse and the eye appeal of that side is superb. The obverse, however, suffers from a mint-made impression in the planchet at the dentils left of the lowest curl (possibly a struck-through line from a piece of wire; probably a void in the planchet present before striking). Regardless it catches your eye. Otherwise the notable marks are a puff of darker brown toning in the field off the chin, a line of impressed dentils in the field before the eye, and a few contact marks in the field before the upper lip. E-MDS, Breen state I late, with a very faint die crack through the top of ERI. The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong. Graded MS60 net AU55 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #21023. 1803 S-249 R2 Corrected Fraction 100 over 000. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. The final "Mumps" Obverse variety. Lustrous golden tan and light olive with subtle overtones of light bluish steel and sea-green on both sides. Nearly free of marks or other distractions. The best identifying marks are a pair of microscopic planchet chips in the field far above the upper end of the hair ribbon and another in the field far off the tip of the nose (all as struck), plus a small spot of light reddish brown toning hidden in the hair left of the forehead. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state II, with a subtle bulge in the field off the tip of the bust but no die cracks. (Note: This bulge is present on the latest examples of S-248, which was struck prior to S-249, and it is present on the earliest strikes of S-249.) The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong and the Corrected Fraction (100 over 000) is obvious to the unaided eye. Graded MS65 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #23049. Bland says MS64 and CC#2 behind a slightly finer example. Our grade is MS64. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety in his large cent encyclopedia. 1804 Private Restrike in White Metal Judd-28 R8. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. Very frosty light steel gray. No significant defects, essentially as struck. A small nick on the rim over ER in LIBERTY can be used to identify this example. Only two are known struck with both an obverse and reverse, but a uniface obverse strike and two uniface reverse strikes are known in white metal. These were struck from the later state of the dies with the central hair details lapped off the die. The planchet is thick and weighs 157.1 grains. Breen called the planchet metal "tin" while it is listed as "white metal" in the Judd reference. Regardless there is no trace of "tin pest" oxidation that is often seen on tin planchets. The dies used were salvaged scrap dies discarded by the US Mint: the obverse is from 1803 S-261 with the date altered to 1804, and the reverse is from 1820 N-12. Both dies were rusted, especially the obverse. Many were struck in copper to supply collectors who were frustrated trying to find a decent 1804 cent for their collections (see the preceding lot), but only a very few were struck in white metal/tin. Noyes photo #61453. Our grade is MS60. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety and it comes with a great provenance that has been traced back 150 years. 1805 S-268 R3. PCGS graded AU-55. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and quite attractive; satiny and nearly flawless. The only marks are a short, light pinscratch near the dentils right of the date and a faint diagonal hairline scratch on the cheek. MDS, Breen die state II, with faint die clashmarks at the throat but no die swelling on either side. The is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia and the 1991 Noyes reference on the early date large cents. Called AU50 net EF45 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #23075. Bland says AU50 and finest known by a full 10 points. Our grade is AU50. Comes with a nice provenance. This cent comes with a typed envelope from C. Douglas Smith where he states "Finest known by a goodly margin." Looks like his assessment has held up among EAC graders. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36430) Value $14,000 - UP

1805 S-269 R1 Pointed 1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous light to medium chocolate brown and steel with a hint of reddish brown toning in the hair at the top of the head. Mint frost covers all but the highest points of the devices and this cent has mint state eye appeal. The only mark is a tiny horizontal scratch near the dentils before the eye. LDS, Breen state V, with strong die clashmarks on the obverse and a bulge in the field left of the lower curls. Graded AU55 Choice and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#2 as well. Our grade is AU55. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1806 S-270 R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown and chocolate. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. Essentially flawless; it is difficult to find any identifying marks. A microscopic pinprick hidden in the hair over the 1 in the date and a tiny tick on the lower part of the upright of the second T in STATES may help identify this cent, but you need a strong glass to see them. LDS, Breen state IV, with obvious bulges through the date and in the field left of the lower curls. A narrow rim cud break shows at the top of the reverse. Graded MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#5. Our grade is MS62. A beautiful cent that comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 1 finer in 64. (PCGS # 36436) Value $20,000 - UP

Lot 123
1806 "Restrike" Judd-38a Rarity-8+ (Unique). PCGS graded Fair-2. A private "restrike" using an obverse die from an 1806 Quarter mated with a Large Cent Reverse of the 1803-1807 Type with Large Fraction. (The PCGS label says the reverse die was from a Matron Head large cent, which is incorrect.) Rather glossy chocolate brown. The date is weak but visible, and about two-thirds of the quarter design is clear. The lower half of the large cent reverse is visible, but the upper half is faint at best due to an uneven strike. There are some hairline scratches on both sides, strongest on the upper right side of the reverse. This piece was struck well after 1806 using two discarded dies. (It was common at one time for the mint to sell old dies as scrap metal, and those dies sometimes fell into the hands of "creative capitalists.") The host coin is a well worn Classic Head large cent of the 1808-1814 design. This normal mint-produced cent was overstruck using an 1806 Browning-5 quarter obverse die mated with a reverse die of the Large Fraction type used for large cents of 1803-1807. The 1806 quarter obverse is struck over the reverse of the host cent, with cent undertype clearly visible at the face of Ms Liberty. The Draped Bust large cent reverse was struck over the obverse of the host cent, but the only clear undertype remaining is the L in LIBERTY from the headband of the Turban Head large cent, and this is located under the E in UNITED. The 1806 quarter die shows evidence of extensive rusting around the stars and ribbon. The reverse die does not match any of the similar large fraction reverse dies used to strike any of the numerous varieties of large cents dated from 1803 to 1807, so it must have been an unused spare die made obsolete by the change to the Classic Head design at the end of 1807. It is easily differentiated from the known large fraction reverse dies by comparing the length of the fraction bar and the wreath stem that points to the U in UNITED. The fraction bar on this "new" reverse extends to above the center of the 1 in the denominator, and the wreath stem extends well over half way to the bottom of the U. Many additional differences can be found between this "new" die and the ones already familiar to us, but these are two of the more obvious ones. Both dies probably were obtained from the Mint as scrap sometime after 1816. Similar "restrikes" and improbable die parings were produced by Joseph Mickley using scrap dies obtained in this manner, and this piece may be a product of his whimsy. (The popular 1804 cent and 1811 half cent "restrikes" are two of the more famous Mickley products.) These and other discarded mint dies owned by Mickley were confiscated by the US Mint shortly before the auction of Mickley’s collection in 1867. This unique piece has been known for a long time. It is listed by Judd as #38a in his book on US Pattern Coinage, and it is mentioned in the Scott/Taxay Comprehensive Catalog of US Coinage. Our grade is Fair-2, same as the PCGS assessment. Noyes photo #28738. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only example graded. (PCGS # 12197) Value $9,000 - UP

1807 S-271 R1 Small Fraction, "Comet" Obverse. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Frosty steel brown and tan with hints of underlying very faded mint color showing through in protected areas. Darker steel brown toning covers the highpoints on the obverse, and that side is a bit dull thanks to a microscopic layer of oxidation that subdues the luster. The reverse is bright and lustrous. Nearly free of marks, and the ones that are present are trivial. A speck of darker toning in the field above the bust, an extremely faint horizontal hairline on the bust, and a speck of toning near the leaf under the first T in STATES can help identify this cent. MDS, Breen state IV. The "Comet" break in the field behind the head is strong and there are additional linear flaws in the fields and on the neck of Ms. Liberty. Sharply struck and very attractive, but the obverse could benefit from a proper brushing to unleash the mint luster on that side. Graded MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 with one other piece in the Noyes census, his photo #20735. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1 as well. Our grade is MS63. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference on early date large cents. A superior example of this famous and very popular "Redbook" variety. Comes with an important provenance. PCGS population 1; the only RB graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36455) Value $35,000 - UP

1807/6 S-272 R4+ Overdate Small 7 over 6. PCGS graded AU-55. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with underlying mint frost, especially on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and quite glossy thanks in part to a very thin layer of "Care" or some similar protectant. Looks mint state but there is a trace of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are a pair of small nicks high on the neck and a dull nick just right of the date. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks on both sides. There are microscopic die polishing lines in the obverse fields and sharp pantograph lines on the portrait. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-9 and the reverse is off center a bit to K-12. A sharp, very attractive example of this classic rarity in the early date series of large cents. It is graded AU50 in the Noyes and Bland census lists, and it has been recognized as the undisputed finest known example of the variety for more many decades. Noyes photo #20999. Our grade is AU50 as well. Both sides are plated in the 1934 Clapp reference on the cents of 1804-1814, Penny Whimsy, and the Noyes reference books. A "must-have" for the collector who wants the finest example of this "Redbook" rarity. And it comes with an outstanding provenance that has been traced back 100 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36439) Value $140,000 - UP

Puffs of lighter brown toning are scattered over the reverse. The only notable mark is a dull diagonal nick under the eye. Has the eye appeal of a mint state cent but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. LDS, Breen state IV late, with clearly defined rim cud breaks over STA extending halfway to the adjacent D. Graded AU55 net AU50 in the Noyes census, his photos #34259 and #63343 (same coin, 2 photos). Not seen by Bland. Our grade is AU55. 1807 S-276 R1 Large Fraction. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC. Frosty medium steel brown and light olive with mellowing mint red covering 5% of the obverse and at least 15% of the reverse. Sharply struck and nearly free of marks. A puff of slightly darker toning in the field over the bust tip and a thin diagonal nick high on the neck near the hair are the best identifying marks, and they are insignificant. The luster is a bit subdued by natural oxidation and a proper brushing could add to the eye appeal by uncovering the underlying mint bloom. EDS but not quite the earliest, Breen state II early, with crumbling connecting three dentils over the B in LIBERTY and two dentils over the right edge of that R. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Graded MS63 Choice and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #21281. Bland says MS62 and finest known in his census. Our grade is MS63. A superb example of the "Large Fraction" variant of 1807 cent, the finest of the type worthy of the very best Registry Collection. PCGS population 1, none finer. (PCGS # 36452) Value $30,000 - UP
