Lot 34
1796 S-92 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Lustrous light olive and steel with subtle overtones of light bluish steel in the fields and protected areas. Satiny mint frost covers the fields on both sides and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks, and they are insignificant, are a small spot of slightly darker toning in the center of the cheek, a few microscopic planchet flakes or chips in the field left of the hair ribbon, and a spot of reddish toning between the N & E in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with several very fine die cracks on the obverse and die clashmarks on both sides. In addition there is a strong double profile on the forelock, forehead, and nose (from die bounce or shift during striking, often called "machine doubling"). Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20324. Bland says MS60 and CC#2 in his census. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65. (PCGS # 35813) Value $25,000 - UP

1796 S-93 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with subtle hints of lighter reddish steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas outside the wreath. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is fabulous. The only marks are a dull nick on the jawline near the earlobe, a shallow nick at the right foot of the A in STATES, and a spot of darker toning at the left top of the D in UNITED. MDS, Breen state VI, with clearly defined die clashmarks on both sides and strong die cracks at ERICA and the fraction. A retained cud break connects the tops of CA to the rim but the retained cud break at ER has not formed. Graded MS62 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #28657. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS63. This cent was removed from an old green-label PCGS slab graded MS64BN, and it was covered with oxidation that obscured the luster and severely diminished the eye appeal (which may have affected the Bland and Noyes assessments). A delicate brushing brought it back to life. The cent is choice and the eye appeal is truly superior. And it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 35816) Value $60,000 - UP

1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-63+ Brown. CAC. Glossy tan and light brown blending to light steel brown on the highpoints. Faded mint red shows in the protected areas covering about 10% of the planchet on both sides, and this cent has great eye appeal. The only defects are a spot of very fine carbon in the field left of the lower locks and some tiny planchet chips scattered over both sides (as struck). LDS, Breen state III, with a thick die crack from the dentils to the right top of the Y in LIBERTY and a fine diagonal crack through the top of the first A in AMERICA nearly reaching the adjacent M. Only 2 or 3 mint state examples of the variety are known (depending on the condition census you prefer), and the finest of those is impounded in the ANS collection. Graded MS62 and CC#2 behind the ANS coin in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and CC#3, his photo #21840. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. Only 2 graded MS at PCGS. (PCGS # 35828) Value $60,000 - UP

1796 S-103 R4+ Draped Bust LIHERTY Error. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Lustrous medium steel brown and light olive with mint red in protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. A fabulous cent, virtually flawless except for some of the usual microscopic planchet flakes on the cheek and inside the wreath (all as struck). The surfaces are satiny and this cent has superb eye appeal. It is the undisputed finest example of the 1796 LIHERTY obverse by a wide margin, regardless of the die variety (S-103 and S-104 used this same obverse die). LDS, Breen state II, with fine die cracks on the reverse. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 by 15 points in the Noyes census, his photo #38824. Bland says MS63 and CC#1. Our grade is MS64. A highlight of this fabulous collection and a must-have for the collector of the finest "Redbook" registry set of large cents. (Note: This cent brought the highest price of all the superb 1796 large cents in the 5/4/1999 Stack's auction of the remarkable collection of 1796 US coinage assembled by John Whitney Walter.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 35882) Value $175,000 - UP

1796 S-104 R3 Draped Bust LIHERTY Error. PCGS graded AU-53. Glossy light chocolate brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty golden tan in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal is excellent. The notable marks are a dull nick under the I in LIBERTY, a very faint scuff of hairlines on the face, a dull scratch hidden in the leaves under the N in UNITED, and a couple spots of darker reddish chocolate toning below the second S in STATES. Very early die state (VEDS), Breen state I, with smooth fields that are free of any trace of die rust, and there are sharp die clashmarks on the reverse. The front edge of the face is softly struck as it the opposing area under NT in CENT, but everything else is sharp. The LIHERTY error is bold. A new discovery that has not been seen by Noyes or Bland. A premium example of the "common" LIHERTY variety. Our grade is VF35. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 35849) Value $22,500 - UP

1796 S-104 R3 Draped Bust LIHERTY Error. PCGS graded AU-53. Choice medium brown and chocolate blending to olive brown in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and show only minor contact marks. The notable ones are a horizontal nick on the forehead, a diagonal nick at the hair under the earlobe, and one more in the field under the chin. There are traces of soft dirt in the protected areas on both sides but you need a glass to see it and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The LIHERTY error is bold. M-LDS, Breen state III, with extensive die rust evident on both sides, strongest around UNITED STATES on the reverse. The die cracks at the O in OF and M in AMERICA are present but the die crack at TY in LIBERTY has not formed. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for finest known honors in the Noyes census, his photo #25308. Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is VF35+. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of roughness or verdigris, but there are some light contact marks scattered over both sides. A collection of tiny nicks left of the L in LIBERTY, a horizontal hairline scratch in the field right of the neck, and a minor rim bruise at TA in STATES are the notable marks. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. Graded EF40 net VF35 and CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #21680. Bland says EF45 net VF35 and CC#3. Only 3 examples have been graded better than F15 by EAC standards, so this rare variety is one of the tougher ones to find in higher grades. The famous collections of Walter Husak (Heritage 1/2008:2118) and Daniel Holmes (Goldberg 9/2009:200) contained corroded net VG8 examples, and the best one in the ANS collection grades net VG10. 1796 S-119 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty uniform medium brown. Satiny mint luster covers the fields on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No spots or contact marks, but both sides show many of the tiny pre-striking planchet chips that are commonly associated with this die variety. Most of these chips are found on the devices while the fields are nearly flawless. The only notable planchet chip is a diagonal nick-like line left of the eye. LDS, Breen state III, with crumbling along the rim over AT in STATES that involves at least 7 dentils. Almost certainly from the famous "Nichols Hoard" of mint state cents. (The Nichols Hoard consisted of a large number of mint state cents, perhaps as many as 1000, dated 1796 and 1797 that were obtained directly from the mint in 1797, reportedly by Benjamin Goodhue, a member of the Continental Congress. These cents were passed down to his daughters and eventually came into the possession of David Nichols of Gallows Hill near Salem, Massachusetts, in the 1860's. Die varieties found in the hoard included 1796 S-119, and 1797 S-123 & 135.) Noyes photo #34209. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1797 S-120a R3 Reverse of 1796, Plain Edge. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown blending to slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints of the devices. Satiny mint frost covers both sides of this cent and the eye appeal is fabulous. The only marks are a pair of thin nick-like planchet chips on the face, a very subtle puff of slightly darker toning in the field above the bust, and a spot of darker brown toning over the left wreath stem. E-MDS, Breen state II, with traces of fine die rust on the profile under the nose and lower lip with more along the lower edge of the hair ribbon. The fields on the obverse are very slightly prooflike and multiple sets of fine die clashmarks are visible on both sides. Struck very slightly off center to K-8 leaving some of the dentils off the planchet. The obverse of this cent is plated in Penny Whimsy, and both sides are plated in the 1991 Noyes reference. Graded MS63 Choice and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #20327. Bland also says MS63 and finest known. In fact this is the only mint state example known of the variety, and it is the finest 1797 Reverse of 1796 Plain Edge by a wide margin, regardless of the die variety. A must-have cent for the finest registry collection. Our grade is MS63+ Choice. Comes with a great provenance, as you would expect. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a tiny spot of darker toning over the right side of the N in ONE and a few more around the first S in STATES. LDS, Breen state VI, with all the die cracks and crumbling described by Breen and minor swelling at UNITED. The "Grip " marks applied by the mint to the edge of the planchet are bold. A beautiful example of this "Redbook" type. Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #27591. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4 honors in his census. Choice, highly lustrous light to medium steel brown with lighter brown and reddish tan faded down from mint color in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is fabulous. No spots, stains, or contact marks. The best identifying marks are an extremely tiny and barely visible planchet flake high on the neck and another in the field off the upper edge of the hair ribbon (both as struck). LDS, Breen state V, with all the die cracks described by Breen. The field off the end of the hair ribbon is bulging due to the confluence of die cracks in that area. Graded MS65 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20874. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is MS65. This is the Noyes plate coin for the variety in his reference on early large cents. 1797 S-123 R4. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Glossy light to medium brown with golden light tan faded down from mint color peeking through in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The always-present die line on the cheek is obvious. The only notable marks are a speck of very fine carbon nestled against the left side of the upright of the T in LIBERTY, a faint spot of slightly darker brown toning (not carbon) in the field near the dentils before the face, and a pair of extremely faint hairlines on the face left of the chin. None of these marks is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The planchet is perfectly smooth and quite choice on the right halves of both sides, but the left sides show many microscopic planchet chips that didn't completely smooth out during the strike. Apparently the dies were axially misaligned (the die faces not perfectly parallel) and the resulting strike pressure was slightly less on the left side allowing some of the natural planchet imperfections to remain visible. This condition is typical of the S-123 cents found in the Nichols Hoard. Still a beautiful cent, and the right halves are absolutely choice. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a tiny crumble in the dentils at TA in STATES but no die crack on the reverse. The usual Nichols Hoard die state for this variety (see the 1796 S-119 for a description of the "Nichols Hoard). Graded MS60 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #36180. No spots or stains, but there are some small puffs of lighter golden tan on the lower part of the reverse. Just a few microscopic contact marks including a very light rim bruise over the right side of the E in UNITED. A pair of short, thin struck-through lines (caused by debris on the die) are in the field under the lower end of the hair ribbon. MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on the obverse and clashmarks on both sides. The M over E in AMERICA die-cutting error is strong. Graded AU55 and finest known in the Noyes and Bland census lists (Noyes photo #20371). But after a proper brushing it is clear that this cent is mint state with great luster and eye appeal. Our grade is MS60+. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1797 S-130 R2. PCGS graded AU-55. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate brown with reddish steel brown tones in fields on the reverse. The sharpness is close to mint state with just a hint of friction on the highpoints, but there is some darker crud at the eye and around the hair ribbon into the field below. Otherwise the only notable mark is a nick in the field left of the lower curls. A very tiny planchet clip weakens a couple dentils over the B in LIBERTY and the opposing dentils under the fraction (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state V early, with a fine vertical die crack in the field before the portrait but before the tiny lump forms on the end of the nose. Mint frost shows in the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a dull tick on the shoulder, a small rim bruise under the 97, and a spot of darker toning near the leaf under the U in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two strong die cracks from the rim to the E in AMERICA, and the area between these two cracks is raised but not yet a real cud break. The field under the hair ribbons is depressed thanks to a lack of planchet metal in that area, and that caused the strike on the opposing left side of the reverse to be weak. 1797 S-136 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Choice glossy medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty lighter brown and tan toning covers the protected areas on both sides and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only marks are a tiny pinprick in the field before the middle of the neck and a short pin scratch over the bust tip. LDS, Breen state V, with a heavily blunted reverse die and fine die cracks at the U in UNITED and E in AMERICA. Die clashmarks are visible on both sides. Called AU55 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors in the Bland and Noyes census lists, Noyes photo #24192. In a side-by-side comparison with the equally graded Proskey-Hines-Sheldon-Naftzger coin conducted by Del Bland and others in June 1981, this piece was judged to be the finest by a very small margin. 1797 S-137 R2. PCGS graded MS-61 Brown. Very attractive frosty medium steel brown with lighter tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas. Mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has mint state eye appeal in spite of a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a spot of reddish chocolate toning between the E and S in STATES and inconspicuous spots of shallow reddish verdigris under the E and I in AMERICA. MDS, Breen state IV early, with light die cracks on the reverse. Both sides show some of the usual tiny planchet flakes and chips that are nearly always present on the variety, but they are not significant or distracting. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference on early large cents. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #20609. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is AU55. This variety is unknown in mint state, and this one comes very close (C. Douglas Smith considered this piece to be "full mint state"). No contact marks or other defects, and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent in spite of the minor planchet defects. 1798/7 S-152 R2 Overdate Large 8 over 7. PCGS graded AU-58. Glossy tan and steel brown with a few puffs of darker olive brown toning in the field behind the portrait. Mint frost covers the protected areas and this cent looks much better in hand that it does in the Noyes photo. From the standpoint of wear this cent deserves an AU grade, but there are a few too many tiny contact marks on the obverse for a grade that high. A pair of dull, nearly parallel diagonal scratches in the field off the chin are the only notable contact marks, and they are barely visible to the unaided eye. The reverse is choice. EDS, Breen state I late. The wave from the rim to the hair under the ribbon is weak and there are traces of a micro-fine hairline crack along the wave, but there is no trace of die rust at RICA. The overdate feature is bold. Graded EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census his photo #34494. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is EF45. Peeps of golden tan faded down from mint color are visible on the reverse and this cent has great eye appeal. Nearly void of marks or other distractions. A thin diagonal planchet void along a die crack just right of the date and a microscopic planchet flake over the bust tip (both as struck) can help identify this cent, but you need a good glass to see them. LDS, Breen state VI, with all the fine die cracks described by Breen, a small lump in the drapery on the bust, and fine die rust scattered over the reverse. 1798 S-166 R1 Style II Hair, Large 8. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Choice lustrous medium steel and olive with faded mint red showing on 5% of the obverse and at least 20% of the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains, and the only contact marks are some very light scratches at the left foot of the M in AMERICA. Nicely struck except for the typically weak impression on the bust tip, along the bottom of the date, and on the first A in AMERICA (which is opposite the bust tip). LDS, Breen state VI, with a small internal cud break inside the E in UNITED and narrow rim cud breaks at STA in STATES nearly extending to the adjacent D in UNITED. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW (which caused the weakness on the bust tip). A relatively new discovery of the variety; not evaluated by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is MS63. After reviewing photographs of the top examples of the variety it is our opinion this piece is superior to any others known to us. And it has a significant amount of mint color remaining. A wonderful cent discovered in England (like so many of our best-preserved early cents). The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on the reverse. The reverse is rotated 40 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The fields are hard and very slightly reflective, and this cent has great eye appeal. A choice cent if not for the single nick under the ear (and this mark may be a pre-striking planchet flaw). 1798 S-181 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous medium bluish steel with specks of darker olive near the dentils on both sides, particularly on the left side of the reverse. The surfaces are covered with mint frost, even the highest points of the devices, and there is not even a hint of rub on the highpoints. However there is a planchet flake at the rim left of the upper end of the hair ribbon, and this flaw does catch your eye. The only other mark is a tiny planchet flake in the field before the middle of the neck, and this defect is insignificant. Both of these defects are mint-made planchet flaws that can be used to identify this cent. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die cracks on the obverse, but the crack up from the dentils right of the date has not formed. Struck with the reverse rotated 45 degrees CCW. This variety has larger than normal numerals in the fraction, the only variety of the year with this feature (this Large Fraction variety probably deserves a separate listing in the "Redbook"). And the larger numerals were punched over the smaller (normal) numerals. The overpunching is clearly visible on the two 0's, and the first 0 was also punched over a small 1. Struck very slightly off center to K-9. Graded MS62 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #23255. Bland says AU55 (because of the planchet flaw) and tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is MS60. The only defects are some light contact marks scattered over both sides including several nicks in the field before the portrait, others inside the wreath, and a relatively strong vertical nick in the top of the E in STATES. Otherwise this cent would rate a slightly higher grade. MDS, Breen state III, with fine die clashmarks on both sides but no die cracks. Struck slightly off center to K-6 but the date is clear and the overdate feature is obvious. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #21286. This cent was displayed in the 1914 Exhibition of United States and Colonial Coins presented by the American Numismatic Society in January and February of that year, and this cent is included on Plate #22 in the catalog prepared for that event. A wonderful cent, void of any roughness or verdigris with only light contact marks, none distracting. The notable marks are two thin, parallel nicks in the hair left of the earlobe, a tiny scratch right of the base of the Y in LIBERTY, and a thin nick on the rim below the lowest curl. MDS, Breen state IV early, showing minor crumbling in the dentils at F-AM. The date and LIBERTY are strong and the eye appeal of this 1799 is outstanding. Graded VF30 and tied for CC#2 honors in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #21331. Our grade is VF30 as well. Noyes has this cent tied with the "Abbey" 1799, but in your cataloger's opinion the piece offered here is the better example (the Abbey example resides in a PCGS holder similarly graded as XF45). Del Bland has the Downing-Bird example offered here graded 5 points higher than the Abbey cent. The Abbey cent sold for $161,000 in the Heritage sale of the Walter Husak collection on 2/15/2008 (lot 2192). The finest example is the Daniel W. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown with underlying very faded mint color peeking through in the fields and protected areas, particularly on the obverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains, and you need a strong glass to find any contact marks. A pair of tiny ticks on the truncation over the 00 in the date and some lighter tan toning around ICA and the fraction can help you identify this cent. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks under the fraction but before any noticeable die rust or chipping. Graded MS63 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #20242. Our grade is MS63+. This is the undisputed finest known example of the variety, and it has the distinction of being the finest 1800/798 overdate with Style I Hair of any die variety. According to the Noyes condition census this is the only mint state example of the type, and it is truly beautiful. This is the plate coin for the die variety in the 1991 Noyes reference on early large cents. A highlight of this fabulous collection and a must-have for the collector who demands the very finest. Our grade is MS60. This is the plate coin for the die variety in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy and in the 1991 Noyes reference. Comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36158) Value $50,000 - UP

1800/79 S-194 R3 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and light to medium chocolate with traces of lighter brown and golden tan faded down from mint color on both sides. Just a few trivial contact marks from flawless. The notable ones are a faint diagonal hairline from the ear to the chin, a light nick on the throat, and another tiny horizontal nick over the junction of the E & N in CENT. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II. There is a fine die crack arcing through CA to the dentils left of the denominator but no cud breaks. The overdate feature is obvious to the unaided eye. A great example of this "Redbook" type. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and CC#2, his photo #24190, and he lists only 2 mint state examples of the variety. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer: 1 in 63+, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 36161) Value $30,000 - UP

1800/79 S-196 R1 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has mint state eye appeal in spite of a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. No spots or stains, only a few minor contact marks including a dull nick in the drapery over 00 and a small contact mark close over the upper end of the hair ribbon. LDS, Breen state III, with a die crack down through the E in LIBERTY and the portrait to the truncation over the 8. Breen notes this crack reaches into the hair, but it clearly extends all the way down to the truncation on this example. Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #22592. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#3. Both census takers evaluated this cent while it had a layer of dirt hiding the mint luster. The only spots visible to the unaided eye are a tiny one off the tip of the bust and another near the rim before the chin. No spots or stains; the only mark is a tiny horizontal nick in the field close under the end of the chin. The surfaces are satiny and the mint frost is unbroken. A very attractive cent that would qualify for gem status except for the weak strike on the bust and the opposing area at S-OF. Breen mentions this strike problem on page 614 of his large cent encyclopedia where he states "Often weak on the profile and end of drapery, lower right obverse dentils, some leaves on the right branch, S OF, and upper right border, reflecting axial die misalignment of state III."
