Lot 558
1816 N-8 R3 VF30. Five points sharper but there three rim bruises on the reverse, the strongest one at IC in AMERICA. Frosty tan and light brown with dark steel brown toning on the highpoints. Flowline luster covers the protected areas on both sides. LDS with three rim cud breaks on the obverse. The two rim cuds on the right side are strong; the rim cud at star 2 is very narrow due to the obverse die being misaligned in that direction. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. Value $125 - UP

1817 N-5 R3. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and light olive with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Great eye appeal, just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The best identifying marks are a tiny streak of darker toning down from the lower right point of star 8 and a small spot of similar toning over star 11. Nicely struck E-MDS showing radial lines in all the stars and very fine radial die flowlines in the fields. The repunching on the left base of the N in ONE is strong and most of the dentils on the reverse are visible. Called AU55 net AU50 in the Noyes census, his photo #25221. Our grade is AU58. A beautiful cent that comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. (PCGS # 36562) Value $2,000 - UP

1819 N-2 R1 Repunched 8 & 9, Large Date. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Glossy medium chocolate and steel brown with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas of the obverse. The only marks are a small tick high on the neck under the earlobe and a faint splash of slightly lighter brown toning over the N in CENT. Nicely struck LDS. Both dies have been lapped to remove die rust leaving smooth fields on both sides. The repunching on the 8 and 9 in the date remains clear. The coronet tip and upper stars are well struck, which is seldom the case in the earlier rusted die state. Called MS60 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #35155 (but second finest known of the late, lapped die state). Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Naftzger Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 5 finer: 2 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65, 1 in 65+. (PCGS # 36631) Value $800 - UP

The bottom of the C in CENT is strong. Graded AU50 by Del Bland. A very nice cent that comes with an excellent provenance. Value $500 - UP

1821 N-2 R1 VF30. Ten points sharper but this cent has been waxed or covered with some other greenish olive substance that makes it very glossy. The surfaces are smooth and there are no notable marks. This cent could rate a significantly higher grade if the coating was removed. EDS. The fields are slightly reflective and the die line from the bust tip is sharp. Inspection recommended. Value $900 - UP

The only notable marks are two small nicks on the jawline, a thin nick under the right side of star 3, and two tiny scratches at the dentils under star 11. EDS with smooth reflective fields and no die crack from the bust tip. Our grade is EF45. A very nice cent that comes with an equally nice provenance. 1822 N-14 R6+ PCGS VG Details, Environmental Damage. Rather glossy medium brown and darker chocolate brown, but the surfaces under the toning are lightly eroded. No verdigris and the only mark is a rather large planchet flake in the hair over BE in LIBERTY. The date is bold and the legends are clear. This cent has decent eye appeal in spite of the imperfect surfaces. One of 14 known of this die variety, and most of those are in very low grade (the finest is F12). Our grade is net G6. The variety combines the obverse of 1822 N-7, 8, 12, & 13 with the reverse of 1821 N-1, and the die marriage was quite brief. A key to completing a collection of middle date large cents (1816-1839). The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 36751) Value $15,000 - UP

1825 N-6 R3. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Glossy medium steel brown with lots of lighter brown toning on the reverse. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Nearly void of marks; a small spot of lighter brown toning over the 2 in the date can help identify this cent. E-MDS. The dies are uncracked and tiny lumps from die rust are present at TE in STATES. A very nice cent, just a bit of friction on the highest points from mint state. Our grade is AU50. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1826 N-5 R2 G6. Nice glossy light brown. The surfaces are smooth and there are no notable marks. LDS with rim cud breaks from star 4 to star 8. This cent was struck two times. The first strike was an off-center obverse brockage positioned about 10% off center to K-6. The second strike was normal and centered on the planchet. Incuse elements from the ff-center obverse brockage impression are visible on the obverse and strong undertype from the normal off-center obverse remain visible on the reverse, especially BERTY through ONE CENT. An attractive example of a rare type of multiple mint error. Value $275 - UP

1830 N-4 R2 Large Letters G4. Rather glossy olive brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. Many of the details are better than a G4 grade, but this cent has the look of a piece that has been flattened a bit. It would be unremarkable except that it was clearly double struck with extra stars on the obverse and clear doubling at the tip of the coronet. The undertype is slightly off center to K-10 while the second strike is centered on the planchet. I can not find any doubling on the reverse, and it may have been a brockage maker (struck against a second blank planchet after being struck normally but left in the coining chamber). The date is bold and most of the legends are clear. Value $100 - UP

1830 N-7 R3 Large Letters VF30. Five points sharper but there are some fine scratches in the field above the head, a few more in the field before the forehead, and a couple more over the N in ONE. Otherwise this cent is choice and the color is a very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. There is very little actual wear on this cent, but the strike is soft as always on this variety. Fine flowline luster covers the fields on both sides. LDS. The die crack from the dentils to the bust tip extends to the curl over the 0 in the date. Graded EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#6 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #32058. Value $450 - UP

This cent has mint state eye appeal but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are some shallow voids on the rim at stars 1-3 and on the opposing part of the rim over ED S, all as struck. MDS. The fields are lightly flowlines but the two die lines from the leaf tip under the first A in AMERICA are visible. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60. 1835 N-9 R4 Large 8 & Stars VG7. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and there are no significant contact marks. Extremely rare terminal die state (TDS) with a strong cud break connecting stars 10 & 11 and extending down halfway to star 12. In addition there is a cud break at MERIC, but that cud is weak due to the uneven strike that is seen on all 7 of the TDS examples known today. The reverse is rotated 155 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation (which is similar to the rotation present all the TDS examples we have seen). The weakly struck areas are opposite each other and affect the bottom of the obverse (including the date) and all of AMERICA. The dramatically uneven strike makes grading difficult; the assigned grade reflects the properly struck areas. Not seen by Bland or Noyes. Value $500 - UP

1835 N-11 R4+. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. Attractive glossy light to medium brown blending to light olive in protected areas. The only notable defects are a few small areas of minor roughness at the top of the obverse, strongest at the bottom of star 9. E-MDS. The die crack on the reverse is strong but the radial extension up from the right top of the U in UNITED to the dentils has not formed. The fields are slightly reflective. Graded EF45 sharpness net EF40 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #61546. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. A very nice example of this tough die variety. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 62. (PCGS # 37093) Value $3,000 - UP
