Lot 6
1793 S-14 R5- Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-50. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and nearly flawless with only light wear on the highpoints of the devices. The only notable marks, and they are trivial, are a microscopic scrape on the rim over RT in LIBERTY, a broken line of microscopic planchet voids down the cheek, and a tiny rim nick between the I & T in UNITED. LDS, Breen state III. The bisecting die crack on the obverse is strong; the fields and devices on the left side of the crack are clearly on a higher plain than the ones on the right side. In addition there is a subtle bulge in the field at NT in CENT. A marvelous Liberty Cap Cent with great eye appeal. Graded EF40 by Del Bland and tied for CC#2 honors in his census. Noyes says EF40 and tied for CC#2 as well, his photo #20004. Our grade is EF40. (The finest example of this variety, the EF45 we sold in our Daniel Holmes sale, 9/6/2009:24, brought a hefty $506,000.) Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 50+, 1 in 53+. (PCGS # 35492) Estimated Value $225,000 - UP

1794 S-19a R5+ Head and Edge of 1793. PCGS graded VF-30. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only notable defects are three thin nicks: on the I in LIBERTY, another on that Y, and a final one on the left side of the numerator in the fraction. The reverse is sharper than the obverse (as always on this variety thanks to the high rim on that side), and it would grade at least 5 points higher than the obverse. The date and legends are strong and the edge lettering, including the downturned leaf following DOLLAR, is bold. MDS, Breen state I, with a single bulge in the field below the cap. Graded VF25 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#2, his photo #20465. Our grade is VF25. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 40. (PCGS # 35516) Estimated Value $27,500 - UP

1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794. PCGS graded EF-40. CAC. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the portrait. The surfaces are smooth and hints of mint frost show in the protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. Just a few minor contact marks including a tiny rim bruise under the 94 and another over the second A in AMERICA. There are some tiny planchet chips that didn't strike out of the planchet along the dentil tips at ERTY to before the face with similar chips at the opposing dentils over ERICA and below the fraction. Nearly all the higher grade example of this variety show similar strike weakness in these areas. MDS, Breen state II, with obvious swelling in the field under the cap. Graded VF30 net VF25 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #20861. Del Bland says VF30 and tied for CC#6 in his census. Our grade is VF30. A wonderful example of this 1794 Head of 1793 variety. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 50, 1 in 53. (PCGS # 35519) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP

1794 S-20b R5 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794. PCGS graded VF-35. CAC. Choice glossy light to medium brown with some darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the portrait. Hints of underlying mint frost show in protected areas on the reverse and this cent has wonderful eye appeal, especially for this variety. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and the only notable mark is a very light rim bruise under the tip of the bust. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#4 honors in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #20292. Our grade is VF25+. The finest known example of the variety resides in the ANS Collection and the next two pieces are marginally finer with some problems that degrade their eye appeal. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 50. (PCGS # 35522) Estimated Value $35,000 - UP

1794 S-22 R1. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Choice glossy medium brown blending to light chocolate brown in protected areas. Smooth and virtually flawless with just light friction on the highest points of the devices. The only marks, and they are trivial, are two tiny ticks over the 7 in the date and another in the field above the pole. LDS, Breen state VIII. The fields are flowlined, the obverse die is cracked through the 4 to the earlobe, and there are obvious "Mounds" at the top and bottom of the wreath. A beautiful cent. Not seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is AU50+ Choice, close to AU55. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer in 63. 1794 S-28 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are satiny, the strike is sharp, and this cent has fabulous eye appeal. The best identifying marks are a pair of small spots of slightly darker brown toning in the field off the chin plus a few small puffs of reddish brown toning at the denominator and RICA. MDS, Breen state VI, with fine die cracks on the obverse and die clashmarks on the reverse. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#2 behind an example that was double struck off-center, his photo #25248. Our grade is MS60+. (Note: The provenance shown for this cent in the Breen encyclopedia is incorrect. This is not the coin that was sold by Doug Bird to Chris McCawley in 1/1995. That was a slightly lower grade piece.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 35549) Estimated Value $30,000 - UP

1794 S-32 R2. PCGS graded AU-58+. Beautiful glossy medium brown and chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are some tiny planchet chips in the field before the portrait and the opposing area at ERICA (as struck). A small chip in the field off the upper lip may help identify this cent. This variety was struck with the dies out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). As a result the strike is always stronger on the left and weaker on the right. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with strong die cracks and clashmarks on the reverse. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation (rotations for this variety in various die states have been seen from 80 degrees CCW to 40 degrees CW). Graded AU50 Choice and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #20041. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4 as well. Our grade is AU50. This cent is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays and 1910 Elder-Gilbert references on the cents of 1794 and in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy. In addition the obverse is plated in Early American Cents and on page 13 of the 1979 Tom Morley grading guide for the cents of 1794 illustrating the AU55 grade for the variety. The edge of this cent is neatly lettered in yellow ink "H-18" two times (for Hays) and the "H" and "D" in HUNDRED are filled with yellow ink to signify ownership by Homer Downing. This is a wonderful 1794 cent and it comes with a fantastic provenance that has been traced back a century and a half. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64+, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 35561) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP

1794 S-41 R3. PCGS graded AU-55. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with a subtle hint of lighter reddish brown toning mixed in on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and hints of mint frost remain visible in protected areas. The only marks are a few light nicks on the cheek and neck, a trio of tiny scratches in the field off the end of the nose, and some microscopic planchet chips in the field above the end of the pole (as struck). MDS, Breen state VI early. The die crack from AT in STATES reaches the left side of the O in ONE but the additional crack connecting the N's in ONE and CENT has not formed. There is a partial double profile from the forehead down to the chin with additional doubling on the bust (from die bounce or shift). Graded EF40 Choice and tied for CC#2 behind only the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #21271. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#2 behind the same ANS coin. Our grade is EF40. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1923 Chapman reference on the cents of 1794 and this is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia for early large cents. A superb cent that has the eye appeal of a significantly higher grade. And it comes with an excellent provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 35588) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP

1794 S-44 R1. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Mint frost covers the protected areas and this cent has superb eye appeal. No roughness or verdigris, just very light friction on the highpoints of the devices and a few minor contact marks. The notable marks are a small, dull nick on the neck and a tiny dig over the 9 in the date. The reverse is flawless. M-LDS, Breen state IV late. The crack through the cap to the 17 is strong and a fine radial die crack reaches from the rim to the top of the Y in LIBERTY. There is a partial double profile from the forelock to the chin as often seen on this variety. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20812. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#5 in his census. Our grade is EF45. A beautiful 1794 cent. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1794 S-45 R5+. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Frosty light olive and steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has fabulous eye appeal. Looks choice mint state but there is a light touch of friction on the highest points of the hair. Nearly flawless; a thin nick near the dentils right of the Y in LIBERTY and a dull contact mark at the dentil tips left of that Y are the only marks. M-LDS, Breen state II, with a clear die crack from the dentils through IC in AMERICA to the leaf below and weakly to the right wreath stem. This beautiful cent is plated in the 1910 Elder-Gilbert reference on the cents of 1794, in the 1923 Chapman reference on the cents of 1794, in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy, and the obverse is plated in Tom Morley's grading guide for 1794 cents where this coin is used to illustrate the AU55 grade. Noyes says AU50 Choice and CC#2 by a 20-point margin over the next finest piece in his census, photo #31880. Bland says AU50 and CC#2 by 15 points over the next finest example. Our grade is AU55. A wonderful cent that comes with a great provenance that has been traced back well over a century. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; only 1 graded MS BN at PCGS. (PCGS # 35600) Value $80,000 - UP

1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse. PCGS graded Fine-12. Rather glossy medium chocolate and steel brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals uniform extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and only a few trivial marks including a tiny scratch slanting through the E in CENT, another under the first T in STATES, and a longer one through the left foot of the first A in AMERICA. A small dab of glue on the bottom of the first T in STATES can help identify this cent. Later die state, Breen III, with swelling that weakens ON, CE, and ERIC. The tiny stars at the dentil tips are visible around the reverse except for AMERIC thanks to the weakness in that area. A very nice example of the famous "Starred Reverse" variety in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Unfortunately most examples of this variety come with significant environmental damage, and this one is clearly above average for the variety. Graded VG10 Choice and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #20418. Bland says VG10 and tied for CC#10 in his census. Our grade is VG10. The reverse is plated on page 40 in Tom Morley's 1979 grading reference for the die varieties of 1794 cents. Comes with a wonderful provenance that includes several prominent collectors of early large cents. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Sharply struck with just a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are a barely visible rim bruise under the bust tip, some microscopic planchet chips at the bust tip (as struck), a tiny tick under the earlobe, and a light scratch at the leaf under the U in UNITED. The only other marks are a tiny planchet chip in the field left of the cap and a line of planchet chips from just off the tip of the nose to the dentils (all as struck). The fields and protected areas are covered with satiny luster and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. 1794 S-56 R3 "Office Boy Reverse". PCGS graded AU-55. Very attractive lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent has mint state eye appeal in spite of a touch of friction on the highest points of the hair. Would rate a higher grade but there is a reddish spot below IT in UNITED, and this spot contains traces of microscopic roughness. Otherwise the only marks are some pre-striking planchet chips on the cap and opposing area at the fraction and adjacent U (all as struck), and a very light rim bruise at the I in UNITED. MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack branching down through the hair to the truncation above the 1 in the date, but the final crack from the nose to the rim has not formed. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Looks mint state but there is a light touch of friction on the highest points of the hair. The only marks are a thin, very light nick on the cheek right of the earlobe, a diagonal nick high on the neck (may be a mint-made planchet chip), and another very thin nick hidden in the hair left of the neck. In addition there is a speck of verdigris on the nose in front of the eye, but you need a glass to see it. The reverse is essentially flawless. MDS, Breen state III early, before the small lump at the base of the T in LIBERTY. Graded AU55 net AU50 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20602. Bland says AU50 and CC#2. Our grade is AU50. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety in his large cent encyclopedia. A great example of the "Exact Head of 1795" variety, and it comes with a superb provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 35699) Value $35,000 - UP

1795 S-76a R5 Lettered Edge. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with frosty lighter brown and tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and virtually flawless, and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only identifying marks, and they are barely visible, are a very faint horizontal hairline on the forehead, a tiny rim nick under the bust tip, and a small spot of light reddish brown toning left of the O in OF. MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks visible on both sides. Finest known by a wide margin on every census list. Called MS63 choice and CC#1 in the Noyes list, his photo #20958. In the revised census provided by Del Bland he says MS63 and CC#1. Our grade is MS63 as well. The second finest known example grades EF45, and it resides in the ANS Museum. The next best available to collectors grades only VF25 or VF30 depending on the census list used. A superior cent worthy of the finest collection. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 35720) Value $125,000 - UP

1795 S-77 R3 Plain Edge. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. Frosty medium steel brown with lighter brown and tan toning in protected areas. The only marks are a small puff of darker olive brown toning (not carbon) over the Y in LIBERTY and a very tiny planchet clip under the 1 in the date and at the opposing spot on the rim over the second T in STATES (as struck). There is a bit of strike weakness on ENT and OF, and a glass reveals microscopic planchet chips in these two areas, but the remainder of the planchet is smooth and the surfaces are choice in every respect. E-MDS, Breen state II, with the pole disconnected from the neck, a result of die polishing to remove clashmarks. The obverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy. Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20450. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is AU50+. Comes with a remarkable provenance. 1795 S-80 R5- Jefferson Head with Plain Edge. PCGS graded Fine-15. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Evenly struck on a corrosion-free planchet (many of this variety are unevenly struck and have significant weakness on parts of the reverse). The only notable mark is a light rim bruise at RT in LIBERTY, The planchet has a curved planchet clip under the date and over ES in STATES (as struck). The date and legends are complete and clear. Graded VF20 sharpness net F12 and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes census, his photo #20480. Not sure why he made the deduction, but it is important to note that most of the known pieces of the variety have significant surface problems, including many of the higher-graded pieces in the Bland and Noyes census lists. This is one of the few smooth ones. Our grade is F12+. Weight 201.6 grains in spite of the minor planchet clip. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 20. (PCGS # 35741) Value $50,000 - UP

The fields are satiny and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only notable marks are a small, curved struck-through line close over the pole near the neck (as struck), three tiny parallel ticks in the field left of the bottom of the cap, and a puff of darker olive brown toning (not carbon) at the R in LIBERTY. LDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack that arcs from the right top of the Y in LIBERTY into the cheek even with the bottom edge of the eye. The E & N in CENT are softly struck (as nearly always on this variety), but everything else is well defined. A beautiful Liberty Cap cent that is lightly worn on the highpoints. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #24096. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is AU50 Choice. And it comes with a provenance that has been traced back over 140 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 1 finer in 63. 1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-58+. CAC. Frosty golden tan and light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Hints of very faded mint color show in some of the protected areas, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are mostly smooth but the upper half of the obverse and the opposing lower half of the reverse show many tiny planchet chips that didn't completely smooth out during the strike. The only notable contact mark is a small nick on the truncation over the 9 in the date. This cent probably never saw circulation but the tiny planchet chips on the head are a distraction. The reverse looks mint state in spite of the tiny chips on the bow and NI in UNITED. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks or bulges. Graded AU50 net EF45 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #25460. Bland says AU55 and CC#1. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-53. Glossy tan and light brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only notable mark is a small spot of dark toning or crud in the hair at the back of the head. There are tiny planchet chips on the head and in the opposing area at ENT and ribbon bow, a striking issue seen far too often on these Liberty Cap cents because the high relief of the head consumes too much of the planchet metal. Otherwise this cent might qualify for an even higher grade. M-LDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through ERTY and a chip that joins the end of the pole to the bust. The die flaw in the field before the chin is strong. A beautiful cent in a great die state. Graded AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #22660. Bland says AU50 and CC#4. Our grade is AU55. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 62. (PCGS # 35756) Value $25,000 - UP

1796 S-84 R3 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Glossy medium brown and steel with very faded mint red showing in protected areas on both sides, particularly on the reverse. Frosty mint luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. The only notable mark is a puff of darker chocolate brown toning in the field close before the chin. MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through the top of OF. There is some weakness in the strike inside the wreath that weakens parts of ONE CENT, as nearly always seen on this variety. Graded MS62 Choice and CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #28560. Bland says MS61 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS62. 1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with a wisp of dark olive toning (not carbon) in the field from the end of the nose to the rim and another from the truncation between the 7 & 9 to the rim below. In addition there are diaphanous veins of golden tan swirled on both sides, possibly from an incomplete alloying of the metals used to make the planchet. The mixture of tones catches your eye; otherwise this cent is very close to flawless with frosty mint luster covering the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse. A tiny nick-like diagonal planchet chip on the shoulder is the only additional mark. LDS, Breen state IV. The die crack that arcs through the 7, bust, and pole is clear, the die rust in the field before the portrait and at the U in UNITED is strong, and there are multiple die clashmarks left of C in CENT. The reverse is rotated about 25 degrees CCW relative to the typical head-to-foot die orientation for large cents, but this rotation is normal for the later die states of the S-87 die variety. Graded MS60 sharpness net AU50 and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #20277. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is AU50+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. Only 2 graded MS at PCGS. (PCGS # 35768) Value $25,000 - UP

Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state III, with horizontal die flaws in the obverse fields and a die crack from the dentils to the top of the I in AMERICA.
