Lot 517
Small Date First Restrike Breen 1-B R6. NGC graded Proof 66 Brown. Incredibly beautiful light bluish steel and rose with faded mint red in some of the protected areas on the reverse. The only marks, and they are microscopic, are a tiny curved struck-through line in the field before the end of the nose, a speck of toning on the rim below the 9, and another speck at the right top of the second A in AMERICA. These marks can help identify this piece but they in no way detract from the outstanding eye appeal of this half cent. The fields are reflective and essentially void of hairlines. A premium example in every respect. In our opinion this example is superior to either of the two examples in the famous Missouri Cabinet collection, which is considered the finest collection of half cents ever formed (our sale 1/26/2014, lots 193 and 194 that brought $17,825 and $66,125 respectively). Our grade is Proof-66, same as the NGC assessment. A superb proof half cent and it comes with a great provenance. Worth a look even if you don't collect proof half cents. The Eliasberg provenance is noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; none finer in BN at NGC. Value $25,000 - UP

C-1 R2- Large Date. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. Glossy light to medium brown with light chocolate toning on the highpoints. No spots or stains, just a few small contact marks. The notable ones are a thin nick before the mouth and another in the field near the throat. Scarce EDS, Manley 1.0, with a double outline under the peak of the 1 and fine diagonal die lines over NI in UNITED. In fact the date and many of the stars show fine doubling from die bounce or twist (not a doubled die). Our grade is EF45. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 12 finer. (PCGS # 35318) Value $200 - UP

C-1 R2-. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Choice medium brown and light chocolate with faded mint red in a few of the protected areas. The fields are hard and reflective and this half cent has superb eye appeal. The only marks are faint traces of an old fingerprint between the date and star 13 and a shallow low spot at the dentil tips off the end of the wreath stem (as struck). Shallow low spots are quite common on 1850 half cents for some reason, and from our experience true mint state examples of the date are quite rare, clearly the rarest of the Braided Hair type 1849-1857. Very early die state. There is a partial knife rim at the top of the obverse and the edges are squared (similar to the proof strikes). The finest 1850 business strike in the Missouri Cabinet was in a PCGS "AU Details Cleaning" holder and it brought $1121.25 in our 1/29/2014 sale (lot 200). Your cataloger has not seen a better one than the piece being offered here, and it comes with a great provenance for a half cent. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. (PCGS # 35321) Value $1,500 - UP

C-1 R1 Repunched 1. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. CAC. Frosty uniform medium brown. Nearly flawless but there is a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. A small spot of slightly darker toning at the right point of star 4 is the best identifying mark. MDS. The repunching right of the base of the second 1 is sharp. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 7 finer. (PCGS # 35324) Value $200 - UP

C-1 R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. CAC. Very attractive lustrous light chocolate brown with generous traces of mint red on both sides and subtle overtones of light bluish steel in the fields. Satiny mint frost covers this piece and the only defects are a tiny nick on the jawline and a faint but relatively fresh hairline that breaks the toning in the field between the main curl and star 11. Otherwise this half cent is choice. Nicely struck E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. The die line through the first T in STATES is clear. Our grade is MS62+, close to MS63. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer: 1 in 64+, 3 in 65. (PCGS # 35328) Value $500 - UP

C-1 R1+. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Lustrous medium brown. Looks mint state but there are some microscopic ticks scattered over both sides, none notable but too many to ignore for a mint state piece. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The dash left of the base of the 1 is dull but clearly visible and there is a well-defined lump on the upper half of the I in UNITED. Our grade is AU58. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 8 finer. (PCGS # 35330) Value $300 - UP

C-1 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Frosty medium chocolate and olive with 25% of the mint red remaining visible on the obverse while only traces of faded mint color remain on the reverse. The only marks are a tiny speck of carbon under the lower point of star 4 and another nestled between the tops of the A & T in STATES. Nicely struck MDS with at least two-thirds of the obverse dentils and all the reverse dentils visible (this variety usually comes with smeared or incomplete dentils). Our grade is MS63. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 5 finer: 4 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 35333) Value $500 - UP

C-1 R1 MS60. Frosty lustrous red. The only marks are a few microscopic specks of dark toning, and the only one of those visible to the unaided eye is a tiny spot midway between stars 1 & 2. Looks like a gem red uncirculated half cent but I suspect it was dipped long ago. Sure looks good, though. MDS with most of the dentils properly struck up. Inspection recommended (PCGS # 35333) Value $400 - UP

C-1 R2. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. CAC. Lustrous light olive and bluish steel brown with mellowed mint red showing on 15-20% of both sides. No spots or stains. The only notable marks are two very light vertical nicks on the chin and a tiny tick at the dentil roots left of star 2. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a very fine horizontal die line from the leaf under ES. A shallow low spot caused by grease on the die shows over ALF (as struck). Our grade is MS63, slightly higher than the PCGS assessment that seems a bit low based on their standards. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 8 finer. (PCGS # 35336) Value $500 - UP

No spots or stains, only some tiny ticks on the cheek and neck. E-MDS with many of the fine die finishing lines in the field at TES OF AM still visible. A nice example of this final year for our "Little Half Sisters." Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
