1794 C-3a R5 Small Edge Letters. PCGS graded AU-50. Choice glossy medium brown. The planchet is smooth and this half cent is beautiful except for the left side of the obverse where there are numerous tiny planchet fissures, as struck. Otherwise this cent would rate a higher grade. The reverse is choice. The only contact mark is a very tiny rim bruise left of the fraction, and there is an incipient planchet clip that affects the dentils over BER in LIBERTY (as struck, of course). 1794 C-3b R7+ Large Edge Letters VG8. Sharpness VF30 but the obverse is covered with fine to moderate granularity and the reverse is moderately corroded. There are no notable contact marks but reddish scale mixed with a few specks of greenish verdigris covers parts of the reverse. The obverse was lightly cleaned leaving coppery tan toning on the highpoints of the devices while the rest of the toning is a darker olive brown and chocolate. Unevenly struck, as always on this variety, with weakness at the bottom of the obverse while the upper half is strongly impressed. Nonetheless the date is easily readable and the portrait details are strong. This piece is sharper than the famous Missouri Cabinet example of the variety that brought over $60,000 in our 1/26/2014 sale, and that piece was covered with fine porosity. Removed from a PCGS holder called Genuine, XF Details, Environmental Damage (same as the Missouri Cabinet example), PCGS label #35033.97/27959253 included. Struck with the reverse rotated 10 degrees clockwise. Most of the large edge letters are clear. One of the rarest varieties in the half cent series. Value $10,000 - UP

1794 C-5b R7+ Large Edge Letters AG3. Slightly sharper but there is a rather deep planchet flake, delamination, or corroded patch left of the upper part of the cap, and traces of red and green verdigris are located in this area as well. In addition there is shallow roughness and verdigris located along the top of the head. The reverse is smooth but there are 4 obvious scratches from D ST to ENT in CENT. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the devices. Looks better than it sounds, but it is far from perfect. The date is strong and most of the legends are clear. The all-important large edge letters are easily readable although portions hang off the planchet because they are too tall. EDS, Manley state 1.0, as are all 3 of the examples known of this variety. The reverse is rotated 70 degrees clockwise, which also is typical. An acceptable example of the second rarest variety of half cent (exceeded only by the unique 1794 C-6b). The 1794 net VF25 C-5b we sold as lot #17 in the Missouri Cabinet sale 1/26/2014 brought $103,500. The only other example known, a net VG8, brought $75,000 in a private transaction shortly after the Missouri Cabinet sale. This one will bring less, but it is no less important to any collector who is trying to complete this very difficult collection. The surfaces are smooth, the fields are hard and very slightly reflective, and the only post-striking marks are a few very faint horizontal hairline scratches on the jaw and a single hairline in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY. There is a minor planchet clip affecting portions of the dentils at the top of the obverse and the opposing dentils on the reverse plus a couple tiny planchet chips under the 17 (all as struck). It may be interesting to note that a significant percentage of the known examples of this very rare variety have incomplete planchets. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early, with a faint hint of swelling in the field near the dentils right of the Y in LIBERTY. B. Weight 90.1 grains. Our grade is VF45. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 5 finer: 2 in 55, 1 in 63, 1 in 65, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 35089) Value $3,000 - UP

1795 C-6b R6 No Pole, Thick Planchet G5. Mostly glossy medium brown and steel blending to olive brown and chocolate in protected areas. No verdigris or notable marks, essentially just worn. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without a bulge in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY. This piece was struck over a spoiled large cent and traces of the cent undertype are visible on the obverse. The AM from AMERICA is visible at the 1 in the date and the 00 from the denominator can be found at BE in LIBERTY. In addition there is an obvious arc of large cent dentils on the left edge of the obverse and in the opposing area on the left edge of the reverse. There is not sufficient undertype from the large cent to identify the date or die variety, but there is no question the undertype is from a spoiled cent. The date is weakly struck, as usual, but it is readable. A decent example of this very rare variety, and the visible undertype is a big plus. Weight 99.5 grains. Value $3,000 - UP

1796 C-2 R4 With Pole PCGS VF Detail Environmental Damage. Covered with fine to moderate corrosion, strongest on the lower part of the obverse. No verdigris or notable contact marks. Some of the hair details suggest this piece was lost in an "unfriendly" environment very soon after entering circulation. Only portions of the date remain clear thanks to the corrosion but the remaining legends are all complete and clear. Slightly glossy dark olive brown. Our grade is VF30 sharpness net G4. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 35098) Value $7,000 - UP

1797 C-1 R2 1 Above 1. PCGS graded VF-30. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Very smooth with only a few minor marks including a small planchet flake below the Y in LIBERTY, a faint vertical hairline in the field before the portrait, and a thin fissure (or possibly undertype) at the first S in STATES. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with smooth, hard fields and no die cracks on either side. The earliest die state seen for this variety. This piece is plated on page 176 in the Breen half cent encyclopedia to illustrate his variety 1b that is struck on a thick cut-down large cent planchet. However this half cent weighs 83.5 grains, nearly equal to the 84.0-grain standard, and the planchet is not thick. In addition there is no identifiable large cent undertype on either side, so it appears Breen missed the mark on this one. Nonetheless it is a very attractive example of the earliest die state. The 1 above 1 feature is obvious to the unaided eye. Our grade is VF25. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 10 finer. 1797 C-1 R2 1 Above 1 VF30. Sharpness near mint state but covered with fine granularity and there is planchet erosion or a shallow void along the dentils on the left side of the obverse (possibly as struck). No verdigris and only a few small contact marks. The notable marks are a light scratch right of the second S in STATES and a pinprick over the C in CENT. Frosty olive brown and steel. Struck over a cut-down 1794 Talbot Allum & Lee Cent with New York. Strong undertype is visible on both sides including "NEW" near the rim left of the bottom of the cap. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any die cracks or swelling. Value $2,250 - UP

1797 C-2 R3. PCGS graded EF-45. Very attractive glossy steel brown blending to chocolate in protected areas. The two-tone appearance accents the devices and adds to the outstanding eye appeal. The only notable defect is a small area of microscopic porosity at the back of the head. MDS with the usual die crack through UN. Our grade is VF35. A very nice example, near the lower end of the condition census for the "Centered Head" variety. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 3 finer: 1 in 55, 1 in 63, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 35104) Value $3,500 - UP

1797 C-3a R3 Plain. PCGS graded VF-35. Slightly sharper but there is some microscopic roughness on the bust and in the field before the neck. No verdigris and only minor contact marks including a thin vertical nick at the right bottom of the C in CENT that can help identify this cent. Rather glossy steel brown and light olive. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with a tiny spike from the chin and a dull horizontal wave in the field from the spike to the rim. This half cent was struck over a cut-down spoiled large cent with undertype visible on both sides. The ER from AMERICA on the reverse of the large cent is clearly visible at the top of the cap and portions of TY from LIBERTY are present over UN in UNITED. An attractive example of the "Low Head with Plain Edge" variety. B. Weight 97.2 grains. Our grade is VF25+. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 50, 1 in 53, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 35110) Value $4,000 - UP

1797 C-3b R4 Lettered Edge Fair-2. Glossy dark steel brown and olive with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The obverse is sharper, close to G4, but the reverse is considerably weaker, perhaps Fair-1+. No corrosion, verdigris, or circulation marks. This half cent was struck over a spoiled planchet, probably from a large cent, with opposing indents on both sides. The indent on the obverse has a large "O" clearly visible within the indent, and the indent on the reverse shows a line of sharp dentils. The "O" in the obverse indent is too large to be from a half cent. The date and LIBERTY are complete and clear and the edge lettering is complete except for the portions that are too tall for the thin planchet. A neat mint error and a decent example of the very scarce Lettered Edge version of the Cohen-3 variety. Value $400 - UP
