1840 N-8 R1 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with traces of mint red remaining visible, mostly on the reverse. Nearly flawless; the only marks are a tiny tick on the rim over star 6 and a microscopic scuff at the dentil tips over the E in AMERICA. LDS with numerous clearly defined rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 13. A beautiful, frosty cent. Our grade is MS63 and tied for CC#8 for the variety in the Grellman census. Noyes photo #61066. Just a few trivial ticks from choice including a tiny tick on the rim left of star 2, another on the upper point of that star, and a tiny planchet fissure on the rim right of star 10 (as struck). Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is superb. Just a few trivial marks including a small nick or planchet chip on the eyebrow over the right edge of the eye and a small spot of slightly darker toning (not carbon) right of star 13. 1848 N-31 R3 PCGS Unc Detail Cleaned. Glossy brown and olive with bluish steel and darker chocolate toning on the obverse. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and there are a couple tiny peeps of mint red on the reverse. Sharply struck with just a hint of friction on the highpoints but there are some faint hairlines from a very light cleaning. E-MDS, die state b, with crumbling connecting the tops of the C & E in CENT but no crumbling in the dentils over the R in AMERICA. Our grade is AU50. This was the first large cent acquired by Bryan for his collection (his eye for superior quality improved as his collecting journey progressed). 1854 N-30 R6-. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Lustrous light olive with faded mint color in protected areas on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are frosty and nearly flawless, and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only notable mark, and it is trivial, is a tiny speck of darker toning over the upper right point of star 6. MDS, the only die state known for this variety that combines the obverse of 1854 N-21 (later) with the reverse of 1854 N-23 (earlier). Nicely struck except for some weakness on the coronet over LIB, as always on this variety. This variety was unknown until it's discovery in 1993. Thirty examples are known now, and this is the finest of that group. Graded MS60 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photos #60402 and 61019. Our grade is MS60+, CC#1 in the Grellman census. Previously housed in a PCGS holder graded MS64RB (PCGS label #1905.64/13857081), but the mint color has faded since then. A premium cent; lustrous and nearly flawless. A spot of slightly darker toning on the midpoint of the front edge of the neck and a tick on the rim under the second 5 in the date are the only marks.
