Lot 222
1823 N-2 R2. PCGS graded Extremely Fine Detail Tooled. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals very fine roughness covering all but the highpoints of the devices, strongest at the U in UNITED. Lightly smoothed to minimize the roughness. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a couple light rim bruises at stars 12 & 13 and a pair of small marks at the second A in AMERICA. M-LDS, with a rim cud break from star 4 to past star 6. Our grade is VF30 sharpness net F15+. Looks better than it might sound. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 36757) Value $500 - UP

Lot 223
1823 Private Restrike. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. CAC. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with traces of very faded red on both sides. No spots or contact marks, only the usual tiny lumps from extensive die rust on both sides. M-LDS with die cracks on both sides, but the final crack down through TE in STATES has not formed. These were made outside the mint using discarded mint dies sold as scrap metal. The obverse die used was from the normal Newcomb-2 variety of 1823, but apparently a reverse die of the type used in 1823 was not available and they substituted a reverse die used for the 1813 Sheldon-293 variety. The result was an "1823" cent that looked nothing like the genuine mint product--except perhaps to an unsuspecting novice collector. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #58278. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 12; 6 finer in 66. (PCGS # 81627) Value $1,000 - UP

1824 N-3 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Choice lustrous light olive and steel. Faint hints of underlying mint color can be found in a couple places on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks, and it takes a strong glass to find them, are a faint spot of extremely fine carbon below the ear lobe and another even smaller one between the date and star 1. LDS with flowlines in the fields and very fine die rust showing on the face and neck. Graded MS60 (way too harsh) and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #27552. Our grade is MS63. A wonderful 1824 cent, and it comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. 1825 N-6 R3. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with traces of very faded mint color on both sides. There is a dull nick-like planchet chip on the cheek and a thinner one on the chin, both as struck, plus a few specks of darker toning in the obverse fields and a speck of crud on the lower point of star 5. Satiny mint frost covers both sides and the eye appeal of this cent is exceptional in spite of the minor marks. MDS with a faint die crack joining the N's in ONE CENT to the leaves over the O in ONE. Called MS63 and finest known in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #21686. Our grade is MS63. (Note: The envelope for this cent is literally covered with a typed note from Doug Smith. Doug liked to document interesting elements of coin transactions on his envelopes; this note is long and especially interesting.) 1825 N-9 R2. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Frosty medium steel and light olive. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. Looks choice but there is a very light scuff of microscopic diagonal hairlines on the cheek. Otherwise this cent is flawless. The best identifying mark is a tiny spot of lighter tan toning over the right side of the 5. LDS with a fine die crack from the dentils over star 3 to the forelock. The die rust of the earlier die state has been polished off the die. A beautiful cent with solid mint state eye appeal. Graded AU55 net AU50 by Noyes, his photo #21242. Del Bland says MS60. Our grade is net AU58. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 9 finer: 2 in 63, 5 in 64, 2 in 65. 1826 N-4 R2. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. CAC. Lustrous golden tan and light olive with hints of light bluish steel overtone in the fields and protected areas. There are two parallel ticks high on the neck and a small spot of reddish brown toning right of the T in CENT. Otherwise this cent is essentially void of marks or other defects. Looks choice mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the portrait. MDS with fine radial die flowlines in the fields, but the dentils are complete around both sides. There is strike doubling on most of the stars, along the top of the head, on LIBERTY, and on the mouth. Graded MS61 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #39081. Our grade is AU58. 1826 N-7 R1. PCGS graded MS-64+ Brown. Lustrous light chocolate and steel brown with a few peeps of faded mint red showing through in protected areas of the obverse, but 20% of the original mint color remains visible on the reverse. There are a pair of dull, light marks on the upper cheek near the eye and a small spot of darker reddish brown toning high on the neck plus another in the field over star 13. Otherwise this piece is quite nice and the reverse is flawless. MDS with die clashmarks on both sides, and the ones on the reverse show an outline of Ms Liberty that is rotated 30 degrees clockwise from the normal head-to-foot die orientation present on this coin. This odd situation is noted in John Wright's discussion of this variety in his book on the middle date cent series, "The Cent Book." Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20586. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS63. The notable marks are a closely spaced pair of extremely faint hairlines slanting across the cheek to the neck just below the earlobe and a few tiny wisps of darker steel toning on both sides. Late die state with dentil crumbling at the bottom of the reverse from CA clockwise to under the end of the ribbon. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars. Called MS63 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20619. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1. Our grade is MS63. Previously housed in a PCGS slab graded MS65BN when sold in the Naftzger sale. This is a gem cent except for a small splash of carbon-infused toning under star 3 and a smaller spot tucked inside the upper right points of star 2. Otherwise this is a truly spectacular 1828 cent and the eye appeal remains outstanding. MDS. The details are sharply impressed except for stars 4-6 which do not have all their radial lines.
