Vincent Van Gogh. IRISES. Original oil on canvas reproduction of surprising quality. Goldberg Auctions has made an exception in the sale of this reproduction as it came from a Beverly Hills art gallery in the 1980s-90s that sold very fine original reproductions of masterworks. The Getty Museum acquired IRISES in 1990 in a private treaty sale which proved quite newsworthy given the circumstance of the original sale of the painting only two years prior. No doubt this fueled interest in creating a fine reproduction. Oil on canvas measures 30 x 40" and very nicely framed in gilt wood to 37 x 47". Goldberg Auctions is pleased to offer this work at considerably less than the estimated 70 million the other IRISES was paid for by The Getty.
Due to size, local pick-up or outside shipping recommended. This is a fantastic reproduction and worth every effort to have on exhibit in home or office. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP

J. Barrowman. CIRCUS. Striking oil on canvas by an artist we could not find much biographical information regarding. But this abstract composition is exceptionally appealing, a bit mysterious until one recognizes the sheer joy of performance: elaborately costumed performers, fabric swirling about them, the spotlights just catching their image. It so captures the excitement of a Cirque du Soleil-like performance one would think it was created for the production. Stretched canvas, no frame, painting measures 35 x 23", and is in excellent condition. A wonderful piece. Estimated Value $600 - UP

Artist Unknown: "Judith Slaying Holofernes" Late 18th-Early 19th Century Neoclassical Period. From the Book of Judith, a parable of a valorous and beautiful widow, Judith, who is at odds with her fellow Jews for not trusting in God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors. Along with her loyal maidservant, she enters the camp of the enemy Assyrian general, Holofernes who was sent by Nebuchadnezza to occupy the countries along the seacoast of The Western World, destroy all their gods and worship Nebuchadnezza alone. Judith earns Holofernes' favor promising him information on the Israelites. After gaining his trust, one night she is allowed access to his elaborate tent and finding him drunk, she decapitates him. The Assyrians having lost their commander and leader and saving Israel. Great story but no evidence as an accurate historical telling.

Nevertheless this story is the subject of countless artistic interpretations by artists spanning centuries including many great masters including Gentileschi, Caravaggio (spectacularly Baroque) Baglione, even an Art Nouveau interpretation by Gustav Klimt. Very much in the Neoclassical period/style comes this powerful unsigned oil on canvas of some age. For over 50 years this painting hung at a estate in Tennessee, and came to us dulled from light grime and cigar smoke. Professionally cleaned and examined for issues by Centurian Fine Art Restoration here in Los Angeles, this striking work now displays beautifully, the subtleties in color and tone fully apparent. Cleaning also revealed a couple of very small areas of restoration expertly executed many decades past. Canvas measures 38½ x 29" and is framed to 46 x 36" in gilt wood. A dramatic work and a fine centerpiece for a distinct home, library or gallery. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

Ture Bengtz. Summer Day. (1907-1903) Finnish immigrant who settled in Boston and in 1927 attended the prestigious School of Fine Arts was not only a fine painter, but also a technical illustrator for Raytheon during WWII, his illustrations proving so exact that they appeared to many to be photographs. His optimism for living in the US informed his artwork, as can be seen in this outstanding example (oil on canvas) of his style--two girls on a bridge on a lazy summer day watching the patterns in the water. Remarkably, the original exhibition tag for this piece still exists on back of painting. 24th Swedish American Art Exhibition, Chicago, April 6-13, 1947 with the title of the work and a price of $400 (over $4600.00 today.) Birket Foster (Myles): Popular English Watercolorist and Illustrator of the Victorian Era. (1825-1899) In his lifetime of painting, Birket Foster painted great numbers of landscape scenes from Scotland to the Mediterranean. But it was after moving to Witley that Birket Foster produced the works for which he is best known - a sentimentalized view of the contemporary English countryside, particularly in the west Surrey area. His works were recognized for their detail and execution and so popular that they were used by Cadbury on their chocolate box covers from 1860 on. A fine example of his work here of cattle grazing near a pond, the leaves just beginning to turn colors, a chill in the air. These idyllic works of England became very popular as the ravages of the Industrial Revolution began to despoil cities in noxious air, dust, soot and smoke. They proved an escape to a more romantic time. Watercolor measures 11 x 18" handsomely matted and framed to 22 x 27". Signed monogram at lower left. Watercolor is in excellent condition, as examined in frame. Estimated Value $1,500 - UP

Xavier Cugat. You Bet Your Ass. (1900-1990) Born near Barcelona, Spain, but moved as a child to Cuba by his parents to escape persecution, Cugat was a child prodigy on the violin by age 12 and performed with the Havana Symphony. In his typical illustrative style, this large acrylic on board is entitled "You Bet Your Ass" and it is a joyous explosion of color and whimsy. Rockwell Kent. Spring Thaw, Greenland. (1882-1971) Adventurer, explorer, artist, writer, political activist, erstwhile politician, lobster fisherman, ship's carpenter, and dairy farmer. He explored the world from Alaska to Russia and Greenland to Tierra del Fuego. During his lifetime he was hailed as a talented painter and print maker, he of the rugged realist school of landscape painters. His 1930 illustrations for Moby Dick are among his most lasting achievements. He was the first American artist to have work exhibited in the Soviet Union which did cause him controversy in the 1950s at the height of McCarthy. Today Rockwell Kent is regarded as one of America's most versatile and talented artists, his work reflecting both realism and modernism which has earned him increasing attention from American art historians and collectors alike.

Goldberg Auction's is pleased to offer this magnificent original oil based on his exploration and extended stays in Greenland. Most of his acclaimed works have to do with the near hypnotic capture of sun, sky and brutal landscape of icebergs calved in the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans form his travels there. Here in his usual style, Kent has captured the natural wonder with Greenlanders dwarfed by the sheer scale of the landscape and icebergs with a typical hut cleared of a Winter's worth of snow. Linday, Vachel. "Congo" with 8 Original Gouache and Colors Illustrations. (1879-1931) Poem by Lindsay Vachel, original folio and original art hand illustrated by Nicholas Zuraw. Lindsay Vachel was a white American poet and considered a founder of modern singing poetry (or poetry as spoken art) and was one of the best known poets of the early 20th Century. In 1915 he published THE CONGO, which exemplified his revolutionary aesthetic of sound for sound's sake imitating the pounding of the drums in the rhythms in his words. Offered is a remarkable find of using a portion of THE CONGO: Section One, as a means in creating incredibly striking watercolors by artist Nicholas Zuraw. We cannot find information on the artist but his 8 original gouache-on-paper illustrations and the cover in this folio are extraordinary. Based on the toning of the mat paper, this original art piece must be pre-WWII if not older. Each illustration is shee-matted but loose inside the striking illustrated black paper cover. Anna and Andy Orlinski. The Battle of Trafalgar. Poland's Anna and Andy Orlinski, are known the world over for their historic marine paintings boasting astounding detail and passion. This is one of the best examples of their work we have ever seen, both artists having created an original oil on canvas: an amazing panorama at sea of The Battle of Trafalgar, which took place on October of 1805. The battle escalated into a massive naval engagement between the Royal Navy, led by Admiral Lord Nelson, and the combined navies of the French and Spanish. The large number of ships involved in this battle are only partially represented here but the ferocity and scale are beautifully captured, where 23 Franco-Spanish ships were destroyed, but not one British vessel. A stunning and quite compelling work. This oil on canvas measures 20" x 40", handsomely framed in gilt wood to 28" x 48" and in excellent condition. Be sure to note a second much smaller Orlinski, "La Prudente and La Cybelle fighting against Diomede and Centurion" in 1794. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

Maurice Utrillo. "Montmartre". Maurice (Valadon) Utrillo (1883-1955) was born in Montmartre where many famous artists such as Renoir, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec lived and worked. Utrillo often used the quiet winding streets and alleyways of pre-World War I Montmartre as the subject of his paintings and sketches. Much of his work was created from memory or postcards while he spent time in asylums painting in privacy, recovering from bouts of mental illness and alcoholism. In spite of his wretched life he maintained a prolific output, his works generating worldwide favor. In 1929 he received the Legion of Honor.

Original hand-signed pencil sketch, 19 x 25", signed at lower right, with "Montmartre" at lower left. Framed to 27 x 32". Here we see a charming residential neighborhood with the dome of Sacré Coeur peeping out at upper left. Five women and a man stroll down the cobblestone streets, the women wearing bell-shaped skirts. Many of Utrillo's sketches are small, measuring only a few inches, but this sketch, which was a study for one of Utrillo's oils, is exceptionally fine and quite large. Goldberg Auctions is pleased to offer this fine work from a longtime Los Angeles collector. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Crumbo. Gold Fever. (1912-1989) Native American artist, ceremonial flute player, dancer and legendary independent prospector who lived in New Mexico and Oklahoma. Likely one of the most interesting artists in this auction. A Potawatomi Great Plains Native American, whose passion was painting but supported himself touring reservations and performing traditional dances as well as mastering the Kiowa ceremonial wood flute in the 1920s and 1930s. His art is in permanent collections, including the Smithsonian, San Francisco Museum of Art and countless museums in the Southwest. In the 1950s, with fellow artist Max Evans, he took up prospecting and found the two largest deposits of ore, including an enormous vein of beryllium, which earned them quite a windfall. This painting was painted in the summer of 1956. Max Evans wrote on the verso that the painting was executed by Crumbo in a few hours near the Glen Woody Bridge in New Mexico, a few miles from Pilar, with notation signed and dated Aug. 23, 1958. A fantastic bit of history on the verso, of a celebrated artist whose painting (on canvas board) of a prospector, his burro and the New Mexico landscape is thematically perfect, given Crumbo's life and good fortune. 8 x 14" framed to 10 x 16" and in perfect condition.
