(U.S. Senate History) Mike Mansfield and Everett M. Dirksen Write A Caring Letter to Their Colleague Jennings Randolph. Back in the good old days of pre-polarization, there existed a time when Democratic and Republican members of Congress debated during the day and socialized as friends the same evening. Here is a one-of-a-kind typed letter signed by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and Minority Leader Everett M. Dirksen, one page, 10½ x 8", Aug. 24, 1966, to their West Virginia colleague, Jennings Randolph. In their own fun and scholarly way, Mansfield and Dirksen beseech Randolph to visit Capitol Hill physician Dr. George Calver for an annual check-up, noting that both of them have had recent health scares. A classic piece of U.S. Senate history when impartiality and personal decency were important values. A crease and faint stamp in the upper right corner do not affect the message or the item's otherwise fine condition. Estimated Value $500 - UP

Lot 1048
Agnew, Spiro -- Archive of Agnew's Correspondence With a Young Woman of Greek Heritage (1918-1996) 39th Vice President of the United States from 1969 until his resignation in 1973. Archive of eleven typed letters and greeting cards signed either as "Spiro T. Agnew" or "STA," all addressed to Diane (Bouyoucas) Gilmore, whose correspondence with Agnew began in 1973 and lasted until his death in 1996. Gilmore, whose family was of Greek origin, first wrote to Agnew as a teenager thanking him for calling her ailing grandmother in the hospital; Agnew called the hospital on the day of his own son's wedding from a church in Baltimore where Gilmore's uncle served as a priest. Agnew sent a thoughtful reply to Gilmore on vice presidential letterhead, in part: "…She is fortunate to have such a loving Granddaughter as you. You must make every day a better one for her, and your love and care are gifts more valuable than any other." Agnew resigned from the vice presidency soon thereafter but continued his correspondence with Gilmore over the course of the next 20 years. A couple of excerpts: In 1974, "I wish I could tell you what the Government is doing about our MIA's; but beyond what you read in the papers, I really don't know." In 1992, "The political scene today is sorrowful…There is too much back-biting and too many vacuous photo opportunities…" and in 1996, "Judy and I celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary yesterday. It seems impossible…" In 1975, when Gilmore graduated high school, Agnew sent her a greeting card and a small 10k gold bracelet with a charm of the Vice Presidential seal, both of which are present.

Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes, as well as a Christmas card signed in a secretarial hand, a "thank you" card on the passing of Agnew, three letters from Agnew secretaries Walter and Mary Ellen Warner, and a lengthy descriptive letter from Gilmore concerning the background of each letter; also included are two letters, one autopen and one secretarial, dated November 29, 1973 and October 15, 1974, with the earlier letter making reference to his resignation, in part: "I can only reaffirm my innocence to you and hope, in this complex and confusing situation, that you will try to understand that I believe the actions I have taken are in the best interest of the Nation.". Estimated Value $350 - UP
