[First Ladies] Edith K. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, and Patricia Nixon. Edith Kermit Roosevelt (1861-1948) 2nd wife of Theodore Roosevelt and 26th First Lady. Free-franked envelope, "Free / Edith K. Roosevelt," 3½ x 6", Brooklyn, Conn., July 14, 1937. With holograph address to Miss Susie E. Barnum in Washington D.C. Matted with a color image to 14 x 11". Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) Wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd First Lady, diplomat and activist. Typed letter signed, on personal stationery, 2 pages, New York, N.Y., Dec. 15, 1958. To Mr. Cunfer, president of the Young Democrats in Lancaster, regretting that she cannot attend the Fifth Annual F.D.R. Dinner and thanking him for what he as done for the Democratic Party. Bess Truman (1885-1982) Wife of Harry S. Truman and 33rd First Lady. Typed note signed "Bess W. Truman" as First Lady, on The White House letterhead, one page, Washington, Nov. 24, 1950. To Mrs. Cobina Wright, thanking her for her note and saying, "I shall be happy to see you on Monday afternoon at three o'clock." Small blemish to paper over "B-e" in signature. Matted with a color image to 11 x 14". Original transmittal envelope affixed to verso. Patricia Nixon (1912-93) Wife of Richard Nixon, 37th First Lady. White House Card signed as First Lady. Matted with a photo in evening dress and matted to 12 x 16". All four items are overall fine. Estimated Value $250 - UP

First Ladies -- Nine Items Signed by Seven First Ladies With a Bonus Signature by Clementine Spencer Churchill. Nine signed items, six of them being hand-painted/collage covers free franked by Frances F. Cleveland Preston, Mary Lord Harrison, Helen H. Taft, Edith K. Roosevelt, Edith Bolling Wilson, and Grace Coolidge; these are all cancelled between 1930 and 1934. In 1940, Grace Coolidge free franked a second cover which celebrates "The World's Most Peaceful Border" (between Canada and the U.S.). Also included is a 1977 Mamie Doud Eisenhower autograph letter signed to Randall Sutherland, thanking him for a gift coin and adding, "No, General Eisenhower was not a collector of coins…"; with holograph envelope signed "M. Eisenhower" in the return address. Finally, a 1969 cover with a cachet of General Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill titled "Great Britain Mourns the Death of Dwight D. Eisenhower," signed by the two widows--Mamie Doud Eisenhower and Clementine Spencer Churchill. Minor soiling and toning to a couple of covers, else fine. Estimated Value $500 - UP

Five autographed items: (1) Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, signed "Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt senior / 1935" on 1½ x 4¼" paper," affixed to larger card with biographical information and a newspaper photo (2) Grace Coolidge signature, with "Autograph" in her hand, on 2¼ x 4¾" paper, with small newspaper photo affixed (3) Eleanor Roosevelt signature on a 3 x 5" toned card (4) Bess Truman inscription and signature, "With best wishes to David Battan from Bess W. Truman November 8-1955 Independence, Missouri," on 4 x 4" paper affixed to larger card stock; and (5) Mamie Doud Eisenhower 5¾ x 4" signed photograph; some ink skipping in signature.
