Russian Lacquer: Large Lacquer Plaque of "Prince Ivan and the Firebird" and Vintage, Mid-Century Lacquer Box. Two Russian lacquer pieces including a wall plaque, something we have never auctioned before. 1.) 13 x 5½" Fedoskino lacquer plaque that depicts a well known folklore scene "Prince Ivan and the Firebird". We have noted smaller boxes with this art, but the size of this plaque is impressive which gleams from the gold leaf, enamel, egg tempera and lacquer. There are some very light surface scratches and a small ding in upper right corner. 2.) An old lacquer box but how old we cannot say. It does have some minor flaking and crazing to lacquer. But the details in the painting are remarkable, the fabric, the wood cabin and landscape all with discrete gold highlights. The box 2¼ x 4 x 6½" is wood not paper mâché, box hinges not modern barrel hinges nor is it painted red on the inside but instead the same black as exterior. Further, the box has a lock (no key). Nevertheless a unique appeal and unlike any other piece in auction. Estimated Value $400 - UP

The two medium sized eggs are both painted by a different artist with one a portrait of a lady in all her finery, the other a country scene of women picking fruit, both initialed on verso. The smallest egg is a musician from folktale. Finally a very colorful modern Russian decoupage plaque of Red Square Consistent with all of these pieces is the architecture so associated with Russia and that is their distinctive onion shaped domes as seen in every one of these pieces. Some light scuffs, a chip in the black lacquer of base on egg but otherwise these display beautifully and in very fine condition. Brass stand included. Estimated Value $400 - UP

Historic 19th Century Large British Cache Pot Recognizing Hong Kong's Period as a Crown Colony of Great Britain, Chinoiserie Design. Remarkable and historic 19th Century British monteith cache pot with red British mark (Lion and Unicorn, Crown over Crest, established 1879) on base in glaze. After the two Opium Wars China had to cede Hong Kong to Britain in the Treaty of Nanking. As a result, Hong Kong became a crown colony of the British Empire in 1860. In 1898, the British signed a deal with the Chinese to lease Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the "New Territories" and over 200 outlying islands a lease that was to last for 99 years. This cache pot clearly is from that period, Hong Kong harbor filled with fishing boats, the architecture of the buildings very much of the period as seen in late 19th Century photographs with flags of other nations including Great Britain and the United States flying. The extremely detailed scenes completely wrap around the pot but the central image of Hong Kong is similar on both sides. Monteith design is trimmed in gold gilt as are the large handles. Inside the pot is a traditional Chinoiserie design of brightly colored koi fish swimming amongst floating water foliage. Absolutely outstanding and an exceptionally fine antique porcelain pot.

Cache pot is in excellent condition commensurate with age and measures 8 x 19 x 12" with no cracks chips or repairs. We note normal crazing and just some minor residue to one side inside the bowl. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
