Joel D. Levinson. Fleamarkets "Untitled #50, 1977". In the mid-1970s, photographer Joel D. Levinson traveled throughout California photographing flea markets that would pop up across cities large and small, from open fields to drive-in theaters. His eye gravitated to the vendors, the vast myriad of goods, the diversity of peoples coming together driven partly by commerce, partly by community and all captured in stunning black and white photography. Two-time Oscar winner Lou Stomen writes: "Levinson's technique is clean, his eye quick and his photographs are informed with a striking and formal power. His best pictures stick in the mind and are felt in the heart." In 1983, a book of the "Flea Market" series was published which complimented full exhibitions in museums of the series. Photograph #50, 1977 is the featured photograph on the dust jacket and the photograph offered in this lot. A silver gelatin print, 18¼ x 16", Levinson has written on verso From the "C. FM, series "Untitled #50, 1977" by Joel D. Levinson '80-5". In excellent condition with only mounting residue on verso from original framing and very minor waving. On back of mat board a typed gallery tag.

We could only locate one gallery offering this photo after an extensive search. However this image is in the permanent collection of museums worldwide as well as important private collections. "Untitled # 50" is considered one of the most desirable and beguiling of the series combining beauty, melancholy and mystery.

Also included is a signed copy of FLEAMARKETS by Joel D. Levinson, Helmut Gersheim and Lou Stomen by Braus Publishing. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
