Lot 1107
1855-D. PCGS graded AU-58. Well struck with plenty of luster still presenting. A lovely golden orange example of this very rare Type II Dahlonega Mint Gold Dollar. The surfaces are free of all but a few trivial nicks from brief circulation, with the always seen bold die clashing in the fields. Sharp on the date and denomination, as well as Liberty's curls. The Type II style was short lived, and highly collectible. There are precious few of the 1855-D Gold Dollars in any grade, let alone this stunning near mint AU-58! An incredible opportunity for the date and mint specialist who demands high quality. Today it is believed that only 80 or so examples exist of this date and mint, according to the experts at CoinFacts. Only 1,811 struck. Pop 7; 6 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7534) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

Lot 1108
1856-D. NGC graded MS-61. A key date issue and among the rarest of all Dahlonega gold, particularly as in this lofty grade. Mint State examples of this date and mint are generally prohibitive, and we are proud to offer this splendid Mint State-61 example, which is just a hair's breath from the finest seen of this issue. The U of UNITED is well struck, as most examples of this date scarcely show this letter at all, similarly the 5 in the date is well formed. The diagnostic "filled" O in DOLLAR is present, likely from a chipped die. Attractive surfaces and one of the highlights of this advanced collection. Perhaps as many as 95 exist in all grades per CoinFacts, this one towers above all but a few known. Well up in the Condition Census for this date and mint, so a powerful coin that no specialist should overlook. Mostly well struck, lustrous and untoned. Only 1,460 struck. Pop 2; 3 finer in 62. (PCGS # 7543) Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

1857-D. PCGS graded AU-53. A better than average strike with some scratches noted on the obverse near the bust point, and on the reverse around the rim. A scarce issue with a tiny mintage, and still one of the few that survived from this mint. Always in high collector demand. Plenty of golden mint luster remaining. Only 3,533 struck. Pop 12; 59 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7546) Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1858-D. PCGS graded AU-58. A decent strike with light golden orange overtone. Another scarce Gold Dollar, this one showing a mere whisper of circulation on the highest points of the design. A lovely example, and while topped by a few dozen in mint state, certainly would stand tall to represent this rare issue in any advanced collection. Only 3,477 struck. Pop 32; 28 finer at PCGS. Lot 1114
1859-D. PCGS graded AU-58. Struck in natural greenish color gold. Lustrous and delicately toned. This coin actually shows a sharper than typical strike on the 85 in the date, and can be identified by an old minor scrape on the D(OLLAR) up toward the wreath above. Horizontal die polish lines are noted at the center of the reverse. Scarce this nice, and most of the recorded Mint State coins are in the MS-61 to MS-62 range. Estimates of approximately 200 survivors of this issue seem about right. Only 4,952 struck. Pop 30; 31 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7553) Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

1859-D. PCGS graded AU-50. Struck in light greenish color gold and untoned. A nice example of this scarce date, with the usual weak 5 in the date and filled O in DOLLAR. The sufaces are clean and bright, with minimal signs of handling. Only 4,952 struck (PCGS # 7553) Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

Lot 1116
1860-D. PCGS graded AU-55. Well struck for this rare low mintage issue. Plenty of mint luster presented with delicate toning. The U(NITED) is always weak, in this case just a shadow exists. For identification there is a small nick on the bridge of Liberty's nose, the surfaces are clean in general though. These were all struck with a single pair of dies in 1860, from the original issue only about 100 exist today according to CoinFacts. This date and mint are known to be the worst struck of the Dahlonega Gold Dollars, but this coin shows more definition than usually seen. One of the key dates to the Gold Dollar series, and high grade examples are in feverish demand when offered. Only 1,566 struck. Pop 12; 24 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7556) Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

Lot 1119
1861-D. PCGS graded EF-45. With the single exception of the 1849-C Open Wreath variety, this is the rarest U.S. Gold Dollar. Unusual bold strike for this notorious poorly made issue. The obverse die was used to strike the 1860-D coins, with the weak U and N of UNITED, diagnostic to these dates. The surfaces show scattered marks on both sides as expected for a lightly circulated Gold Dollar and untoned. This is generally considered to be the key date to the series as mentioned.

Remarkably, these were struck by the Confederacy in May of 1861 after the outbreak of hostilities. While the exact number coined is unknown, it is believed that only 1,000 pieces were struck. Today there are approximately 75 pieces known in all grades. Based on the recorded mintage of the 1860-D, and similar survival rates, the 1861-D Gold Dollar has earned its place as the rarest collectible Gold Dollar. This coin is a lovely example of this prized and sought-after rarity, and will be a major highlight of any advanced collection. Pop 4; 55 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7559) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1888. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A flashy fully untoned coin that offers eye catching contrast between the frosty devices and mirror fields. As the Gold dollar denomination wound down production in 1889, the last few years saw an unexpected increase in production of these Proofs--much to the delight of collectors today. Gems like this are always in strong deman, and precious few today offer such quality and contrast. Only 1,079 struck. Pop 14; 28 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 87638) Estimate Value $8,000 - 8,500
