Lot 1006
Post Apollo 11 Parachute Deployment Mortar Container With Two Other Apollo Containers Inside With 80+ Tubes of Seeds. Heads up! A most unusual lot from the 1960s, post Apollo 11. Lot consists of a strong green metal container with a bolt-locking steel band to secure the lid, which clearly housed a parachute deployment mortar used by the command module during re-entry. Date is Septermber 25, 1969 and was shipped to Wyle Laboratories Testing Facility in Norco, California by Northrop Ventura in Newbury Park, California. The container alone is a great piece of ephemera especially clearly identified as APOLLO and in bold red letters, FOR TEST ONLY. Container also says once empty, to return to NAA Space Division (later Rockwell.) But inside were two additional containers painted white showing evidence of use with APOLLO spray stenciled on side in red likewise with bolt-locking steel bands. Inside both containers were small tubes and packet of seeds identified with instructions inside for their ideal germination. Goldberg Auctions has reached out to several experts all having different opinions. Suffice to say, the containers are fantastic Apollo era artifacts, the vegetable seeds in tubes/packs equally of interest. Note: Apollo 14 did send tree seeds into space and those were later planted in Texas, but these are all vegetable seeds. Again, a most unusual lot that intrigues. Estimate Value $800 - UP
