Ben-Gurion, David -- Historically Significant Letter (186-1973) Primary founder of the state of Israel and its first Prime Minister. Typed letter signed as Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, in Hebrew, one page, 7¾ x 6¼", on Prime Minister letterhead, Jerusalem, July 30, 1956. To the Mayor of Eilat, Ch. Nagar, concerning Egypt's attempts to cut off Israel's access to the Red Sea and the Straits of Eilat: "I received your letter and I read with excitement of your support of me and the government. Should anyone attempt to interfere with our ability to get to the Red Sea; or to the Indian Ocean through the Red Sea; to reach the many nations with whom our contacts are constantly increasing, and whose citizens come here to learn our mores and social structures that are built on brotherhood and equality, I am confident that we have the strength to defend our rights. The Israeli youth, if it will be called upon, will be able to fulfill its obligations. Be blessed and be confident. David Ben-Gurion. Prime Minister and Minister of Defense." Fine condition; light toning, light folds, and two file holes at right; two small tape remnants at top verso.

A carbon copy of this letter was sent to Yisrael Bar-Yehuda, the Minister of the Interior. It was written amid heightened tensions over Egypt's increasingly agressive military preparations for an invasion of Israel and escalating deadly terrorist attacks against civilians inside Israel by Egyptian fedayeen ("suicide") squads, which had begun in early 1955. At the end of July of July 1956, Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, which connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean, thus blocking the passage of Israeli shipping The port city of Eilat, or Elath, holds an important strategic position in the northern part of the Red Sea, where the Gulf of Eilat and the Gulf of Suez enclose the Sinai Peninsula. This letter reflects Ben-Gurions's expectation of an Egyptian attempt to block of the Red Sea route to Eilat, which in fact occurred in October, and Israel's willingness to defend its rights with military force. On October 29, 1956, Israel launched the Sinai Campaign, which lasted only eight days. "The objectives of Israel's operations were: destruction of the fedayeen bases in the Gaza Strip and on the Sinai border; prevention, for however short a time, of an Egyptian attack on Israel by destroying Egypt's logistic establishment and the airfields in Sinai; and opening the Gulf of Eilat to undisturbed Israel shipping. All of these objectives were achieved." (Encyclopedia Judaica 14: 1605). A fine and historicallly significant Ben-Gurion letter. Accompanied by a portrait of Ben-Gurion. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

Frank, Otto -- Anne Frank's Father Talks About How Her Diary Was Saved (1889-1980) Father of Anne and Margot Frank; the sole member of his family to survive the Holocaust. Typed letter signed, "Otto Frank,'"one page, 11½ x 8¼", Birsfelden Switzerland, Oct. 24, 1979. To Stephen H. Rugg, Long Island, New York. Mr. Frank says he is 90 years old and not in good health and doesn't answer letters at length anymore, but he is making an exception because of Mr. Rugg's great interest in Anne and the fate of his family and friends. He mentions the Anne Frank Foundation, the play and the film about Anne, both of which he read but did not see. He describes his life after his return from the concentration camp and the reasons for his move to Switzerland in 1952, then describes how Anne's diary was saved: "Anne kept her manuscripts in my port-folio. When the Gestapo came to arrest us, they took it, through [sic] all the books and papers on the floor and put valuables in it which they took along. My 2 secretaries who had help[ed] us during our hiding, went up to the attic they found everything scattered on the floor and recognizing Anne's hand-writing, collected the books etc. and took them along. After my return and after we had heard that Anne and my family would not come back. Miep gave me Anne's Diary. Of course I saw Anne writing in her Diary sometimes. I had no idea that Anne had such deep thoughts and feelings as she showed her inner self to nobody as she writes herself. In school Anne was an average student, but we had noticed that she had a very special gift of observation. About 6 weeks after my return I heard that my children had died in Bergen-Belsen…." Slight creasing at upper edge, lower edge is folded, else fine. The letter is accompanied by a check made out to Otto Frank for $5.oo, endorsed by Frank on verso; as well as six snapshots Mr. Rugg had taken in Amsterdam of the Anne Frank House, inside and out, plus one of a synagogue, all signed by Otto Frank. Large Antique Silver Hamsa with Jeweled Accents. This symbol of an eye embedded in the palm of an open hand has had numerous names throughout the ages, including the eye of Fatima, the hand of Fatima, and the hand of Miriam. The hamsa has been variously interpreted by scholars as a Jewish, Christian or Islamic amulet, and as a pagan fertility symbol. The image of the open right hand is seen in Mesopotamian artifacts of teaching and protection. Other symbols of divine protection based around the hand include the Hand-of-Venus (or Aphrodite) and the Hand-of-Mary that was used to protect women from the evil eye, boost fertility and lactation, promote healthy pregnancies, and strengthen the weak. Yet even as the magical form remains shrouded in mystery and scholars debate nearly every aspect of its emergence, it is recognized today as a kabbalistic amulet and as an important symbol in Jewish art. Offered is this striking 400 silver and brass hamsa, likely 75 + years in age, double sided, decorated with several different patterns, silver; fire-gilded, with stamped beading, silver shot, applied decoration, decorative wire a wonderful natural turquoise stone and glass cabachons. From the Middle East (Afghanistan?) 12½" and weighing 7½ ozt. Striking piece. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Johnson County War -- Legal Documents for Four of the Arrested Cattle Baron Leaders and Estate Document for Nate Champion, The First Man Killed. Two legal documents, dated July 5 and July 19, 1892, in the case of The State of Wyoming, vs. Frank M. Canton, Frank Wolcott, Thomas Smith, and Buck Garrett, who were in custody of the Sheriff of Johnson County. The defendants asked for a change of venue for their trial and on July 19th, Judge John W. Blake found that "owing to the excitement and prejudice against each of the…the said defendants cannot receive a fair trial in the said County of Johnson." He changed the venue to Laramie County. Both documents are signed by Judge Blake. Fine condition. With a legal document signed by Rufus F. Champion, the last man to be killed in the Johnson County War, 4 pages, folio, Johnson County, Wyoming, Jan. 13, 1893, with an accounting of the estate of his brother, Nathan D. Champion, who was the leader of the Small Rancher Association which fought the Cattle Barons, whose leaders included the defendants in the first document. Nate was gunned down after holding off more than 50 assailants for most of a day until they set his cabin on fire and drove him out.

The Johnson County War, also called the War on Powder River and the Wyoming Range War, resulted from long-standing disputes between cattle barons, who owned herds numbering in the thousands, and small operators, most running just enough cattle to support their families. Both groups grazed their herds on open range. The cattle barons formed an assassination squad of employees of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, made a list of 70 men they intended to shoot or hang, and headed to Buffalo, Wyoming, the capital of Johnson County. Word of the invasion got out to the small farmers, ranchers and statemen and a posse of 200 men came out to defend against the death squad. A stand-off ensued, which did not bode well for the attackers, until a cattle baron with influential connections got word to President Benjamin Harrison, who sent the U.S. Cavalry to stop the fighting. The defendants on the legal documents here were leading "invaders." Frank W. Canton was a former outlaw and sheriff who accepted employment with the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and sided with the cattle barons. Frank Wolcott was a rancher and WSGA member. Buck Garrett was a hired gun and sometimes lawman, and Tom Smith was a range detective. Estimate Value $600 - UP
