Lot 1237
1850. PCGS graded MS-62. Boldly struck and untoned, with abundant mint frost on both sides and excellent surface quality. This is the first year of issue, and one which is highly prized by collectors. A couple of pattern issue $20 coins were struck of 1849, but they are not available to collectors in the last several generations. This 1850 double eagle shows fabulous surfaces and rich golden appeal. A lovely example. Pop 38; 18 finer, 3 in 62+, 11 in 63, 4 in 64. (PCGS # 8902) Estimate Value $30,000 - UP

1850. NGC graded MS-62. Boldly struck and shimmering with brilliant golden luster. Scattered faint hairlines, none worthy of distraction. A wonderful exmple for the first year of issue of the double eagle. Close scrutiny will find a few light handling marks in the fields, but Liberty's face is particularly clean and attractive. This is the first year these were struck for circulation, and while a few were saved, clearly not too many given the tiny numbers reported next. Here is one of the nicer examples known today. Pop 23; 16 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8902) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1851. PCGS graded MS-63. Wonderful bold strike and shimmering with golden-orange mint luster. This coin is simply dazzaling, with super clean surfaces and unending eye appeal. Notice the exceptional quality and satin nature of the surfaces, for rarely are Type 1 double eagles found even approaching the quality level of the present coin. Clearly Harry Bass, Jr., was onto one of the nicest examples of this date when he secured this particular coin for his incredible collection. A choice Mint State example with a Pop of only 13; 3 finer in 64. (PCGS # 8904) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1865. NGC graded MS-65. Well struck and untoned. The surfaces are sparkling and bright, with a full strike and graced by abundant luster. This coin could hardly be imagined prior to the recovery from this unusual shipwreck which just happened to contain several fresh minted gold coins. Prior to this carefully orchestrated venture gems of Type 1 Twenties were vitually unobtainable. This particular coin is one of the finer examples that came to light after well over a century on the ocean floor. Today these lovely mint state coins are spread around to the collecting community, allowing many specialists the opportunity to own a sparkling gem coin from this historic period, which otherwise would be something only in their dreams. A welcome opportunity for the collector! Housed in a special NGC holder for SS Republic. Pop 22; 3 finer, 1 in 65 Star, 1 in 66, 1 in 66 Star. Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

1872-CC. NGC graded MS-61. Here his a fantastic condition rarity. Although this is not one of the rarest Carson City issues, it is one of the very finest seen of those that do survive. Perhaps 400 pieces exist today from the original issue. Of those, only a dozen or so can claim full mint state status, including this coin. The typical grade for this date and mint is VF to EF, even AU examples are scarce and in high demand. This is a true collector coin and one which precious few examples can match, let alone top in terms of quality. A prize for the Carson City specialist and destined for an advanced collection. Fully untoned and frosty, with scattered light handling marks expected for the grade. The color is bright yellow gold throughout. Free of any deep or detracting marks, and sharply struck. Only 26,900 struck. Pop 8; 1 finer in 62 Star. (PCGS # 8964) Estimate Value $65,000 - 70,000

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC. PQ. A near gem coin with extremely smooth surfaces and nice even toning. Almost flawless except for a minor mark in the right obverse field. This is long been considered the most beautiful coin ever struck at our Mint, and for good reason, the majesty of this scultped coin is simply unsurpassed. The story of how President Roosevelt struggled to have Augustus Saint Gaudens submit designs for our higher gold denominations has often been told, and racing against the clock where Saint Gaudens only had months to live. At long last his concept was struck in gold on the largest medal press at the mint, the only press that could possibly deliver the three dimensional artstistic design from an otherwise flat gold planchet. With minor modifications these High Relief coins were created, only slightly altering the original design so the coins could stack on a bankers table. However, production was slow, it took between five and seven strikes to bring up the full majesty of the designs, causing massive delays in production and crimping the Mint's style where speed is always of the essence. Hence after only 11,250 pieces were struck, new master hubs were created of a much lower relief, the design a shadow of its prior three dimensional self, and high speed prodcution resumed. At least a significant number of these survive for collectors of today to remember this incredible effort. Here is one of the finer ones seen today (PCGS # 9135) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, flat rim. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice golden toning on both sides. A near Gem example of this most popular of the Saint-Gaudens double eagles, with towering eye appeal and near perfect surfaces, these High Relief coins are a combinnation of affordability with rarity and popularity in abundance. The strike is full and complete, and the eye appeal is legendary on this famous High Relief double eagle. Liberty appears to literally walk off the obverse, while the eagle seems to fly high above the sunburst of rays. The number coined will never make up for the unending demand. Here is a particularly handsome example that will long please any numismatist who has the wherewithall to capture this prize (PCGS # 9136) Estimate Value $22,000 - 24,000
