Lot 1109
1838 Pattern Dollar. Silver, plain edge. Judd-85. Pollock-94. High Rarity 7. NGC graded Proof 66. Star. Boldly struck with lovely toning. The obverse is bright white with golden accents around the rims, with highly relective fields and well frosted devices. The eye appeal and quality is incredible for any Gobrecht silver dollar, but to find this level of quality on a coin of this rarity is simply amazing. The reverse is well matched to the obverse, with bold definition mostly bright silver with a few traces of pale blue and golden russet intermixed. Again, the sufaces are simply incredible, with nary a nick or mark to be found. Given this is one of about 6 known, and the finest of that tiny group, we consider this a fantastic opportunity for any astute numismatist to seriously consider purchasing this great rarity.

The obverse is the regular Liberty Seated syle as later adopted (in 1840) with the date below and surrounded by 13 small stars. The reverse depcts the eagle in full flight, level (die alignment III) with the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and ONE DOLLAR below with stops between legends. Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services. (PCGS # 11354) Estimate Value $150,000 - UP

1839 Pattern Dollar. Silver, plain edge. Judd-105. Pollock-117. Low Rarity 7. NGC graded Proof 65. The obverse is mostly untoned save for a bit of gold, while the reverse has lovely steel blue and russet toning. The strike is bold and crisp throughout. While this is otherwise identical to the more common J-104 silver pattern, this J-105 has a plain edge, which quickly identifies it as the J-105 pattern. The obverse is the regular Liberty Seated design for the dollar, adopted in 1840, surrounded by 13 stars with a small date below. For the reverse the large flying eagle is present, flying level, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, and ONE DOLLAR below between stops. The surfaces are immaculate, and this prized rarity has obviously been carefully preserved since the day it was struck. A simply stunning and elegant coin that will be a major highlight of any advanced patern collection. Pop 3; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 11448) Estimate Value $100,000 - UP

1852 Pattern Gold Dollar. Copper-nickel, plain edge. Judd-140. Pollock-167. Low Rarity 7. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. PQ. A lovely example. As noted in Judd "This pair of dies was never intended for regular coinage, but was made to test the concept" It is interesting to note that several metallic planchets were tested to see how these would hold up as well, as these dies struck coins known in gold, silver, copper, copper-nickel and nickel. For the obverse the design consists of the letters U.S.A. at the top and date below, with the center dominated by a large perforation. The reverse has seven pairs of olive leaves with berries in a circle. This test piece was an important step in the development of the Gold dollar, lanched in 1849 for general circulation. Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services. (PCGS # 11589) Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

Lot 1113
1854 Pattern Cent. Bronze, plain edge. Judd-161. Pollock-187. Rarity 4. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. Uneven chocolate toning on both sides perhaps reflecting the bronze alloy. The mint began experiments with making a smaller sized cent, as the current Large Cents were viewed as too large and cumbersome for daily commerce. For the obverse the usual head of Liberty was employed, with the date below. No stars are present, thus the obverse has a cameo appearance. For the reverse the same style elements were used as seen on the current Large cent, but smaller in size. Hence the devices are more elegant and less cumbersome in appearance. This has always been a popular transitional pattern coin. Pop 45; 26 finer at PCGS for all colors. (PCGS # 11663) Estimate Value $1,900 - 2,000

The obverse is the regular dies of the nickel of this year, while the reverse shows the tall 5 at the cener, surrounded by an open open laurel wreath with fruit, tied at the base with a ribbon. Above the wreath is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This is a handsome design and is too bad the reverse pattern was not adopted along with the obverse. Pop 1; 3 finer, 1 in 65 RB, 1 in 66 BN, 1 in 67 BN.
