Shield Nickels

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 571
1866 Shield Nickel. NGC graded MS-64. This one has gold toning on the obverse, and a bit of the usual nickel streaky tone on the reverse. Good luster in the fields, and few marks can be seen, even with a glass. Popular as the first year of issue of the new larger, nickel metal coin, which eventually replaced the half dime.
Estimated Value $500 - 550.

1866 Shield Nickel. AU-58. There are several small marks on the vertical shield lines, and a speck has been removed from the upper reverse near and on the second S of STATES. Cracked reverse die, and interesting.
Estimated Value $100 - 125.

Lot 574
"1867" No Rays. Contemporary Counterfeit. VF-30. Lightly cleaned at one time, and certainly good enough to "pass". The date is repunched on the 18, the shield lines a bit wavy, and the lettering is off style, but all in all a fun coin to study. Can you imagine counterfeiting a nickel? A lot of work went into this, and they are not too common.
Estimated Value $20-UP.

Lot 575
1869 Shield Nickel. SEGS graded Proof 64. Hazy and somewhat dull, the obverse has a broad streak of light gold toning through the shield. Scarce and always popular.
Estimated Value $325 - 375.

Lot 576
1873 Shield Nickel. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-64. Here is a truly rare coin that is not fully appreciated by the collecting public. In a recent PCGS Population Report, we note that 3 have been graded this high, with none graded higher! Further, only 3 others have been graded below it, all MS-63 in uncirculated grades. The closed 3 date punches were replaced in early January 1873 after it was determined that the closed 3 could easily be mistaken for an 8. Hence, new date punches were prepared for nearly all denominations, and new dies were pressed into service. Hence, few closed 3 coins were produced, and this Shield nickel is an excellent example for the collector who appreciates such things. Frosty luster and well struck, the surfaces are problem free.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.
