Lot 2085
1860-S $3 Gold. SEGS graded AU-53. Remnants of luster near the devices and well struck by the dies. We note that the SEGS grade may be a touch aggressive, but this is still a decent coin and certainly one of the better ones known of this date. PCGS has only graded a single example in Mint State, with few seen above EF-45 by that service. Curiously the San Francisco Mint struck lightweight Three Dollar coins in 1860, and when these were discovered, they were melted to the tune of 2,592, leaving a net mintage that was released from the Mint of 4,408. Rare in all grades, and especially so this nice. Minor circulation marks, but most collectors will be satisfied with this piece.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Lot 2086
1872 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-62. A rare date in any grade, with a mintage of a scant 2,000 pieces, this date is seldom encountered. PCGS has graded 8 this high, with only 6 graded higher, giving the collector some indication of how few of these there are. Generally well struck, the fields are prooflike and show minor handling marks and light hairlines. Golden red in color, and a beauty.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.

Lot 2087
1877 $3 Gold. Sharpness of VF-25 but repaired, buffed and cleaned. This one absolutely must be inspected by prospective buyers as the surfaces have been buffed and repaired to possibly fill a hole near the top of the obverse, and remove most of a scratch in that area. A dull matte surface is noted on both sides from cleaning and buffing, and this coin is not the top of its class. Nevertheless, it is a rare date, with a mintage of 1,488, few enough that it is seldom encountered in any grade.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.

1882 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-64. Curious orange gold toning on both sides, and a rare date with a mintage of just 1,500 pieces. This is the 2 over high 2 variety. PCGS has graded 12 this high, with 7 graded higher.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

Lot 2092
1885 $3 Gold. Proof 64 Cameo. Only 109 were coined to represent the proofs of this year. Here is a nice example, the devices are well frosted, making this one of the cameo proofs, and the mirror fields are deeply reflective. We note minor hairlines in the fields, and a tiny ding at the top of the obverse.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

Lot 2093
1886 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. One of the finest graded by PCGS, and no doubt one of the very finest known, the current Population Report shows just 3 graded as PR-66, and we don't know if any of the others are a "Cameo" or not. The surfaces are pristine, without the usual signs of handling or annoying hairlines that diminish the value, and close examination will find only faint evidence of these. Beautiful orange gold in color, with perfectly struck devices and each is fully frosted, providing spectacular cameo qualities. Only 142 were struck, and this coin is clearly one of the very best.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Lot 2094
1888 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-64. A rare coin with a mintage of just 5,000 pieces, and this is certainly in the top five percent of those. Satiny luster in the fields and free of most signs of contact, the grade apparently due to minor hairlines visible with a strong glass. PCGS has graded 92 as such, with 84 graded higher, apparently from a small hoard which came out many years ago. Despite the numbers, remember this is a rare coin in high grade, and there simply aren't that many available for the collecting public.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
