Early Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 989
1821 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-50. Flashy luster and silvery gray in color. Clean surfaces for the grade and not that well struck, as the central curls are not bold, while the reverse is sharp.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Lot 990
1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-55. This one has nice luster and light gold around the edge, but does have the ever-present wipe lines from a past cleaning. A slightly better variety, this one shows the light reverse crack through the legend. Sharp stars and excellent definition on Liberty's curls keep this at the high end of the grading scale.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.

Lot 991
1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-55. This is the variety with the small button in the fold at the top of the cap, and the only variety to show this feature. A beautiful example too, with bright blue toning through the stars and date, gold to russet elsewhere, the reverse more evenly toned in gold, with blue only at the extreme edge. Free of handling problems, and a coin that you won't ever want to upgrade.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.

Lot 992
1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. EF-45. This is a tough variety, and this particular coin is not too far from the Condition Census. There are some fresh surface scratches on the high points near the center, Liberty's face and curls, but these should tone back in time. The rims and surfaces are steel gray and pleasing otherwise.
Estimated Value $275 - 350.

1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Broken 3. AU-53. Fresh mint luster in the fields and light silver in color. Well struck by the dies, and clean on the obverse while the reverse has several minor nicks.

Lot 994
1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Patched 3. EF-40. One of the downright ugliest date messes created on any die, this 1823 obverse die began as the "broken 3", and after quite a few were struck, the die was reworked and the broken part of the 3 was patched at the center. The result was scarcely better than the original, and the 3 still leans awkwardly to the right, with a broad curl at the top and a knob at the bottom. In particular this coin boasts luster in the fields and lovely original toning around the periphery. Light hairlines from handling, but they are not too detracting.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.

Lot 995
1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Ugly 3. AU-50. Similar to the noteworthy 3 on the O-101 variety, this obverse die takes a turn for the worse with a downright ugly 3. Examination of the 3 shows engraving slips, bumps and lumps with the result nothing short of ugly. The coin itself it anything but, with light golden shades over silvery-gray fields that are still reflective in the protected areas. There is a double profile on Liberty's chest and neck. Minor surface marks and a few fresh scratches on the central high devices, as seen on many coins from this group. Nicely struck and popular with collectors.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.

Lot 997
1824 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 1824 over date. AU-50. A popular variety with collectors who have long wondered just what the undertype digits are below the 4 in the date. It is believed to be a 2 and a 0, but no one is certain. This particular example has been cleaned in the past, but has retoned with desirable album toning around the periphery with deep gray there, and brilliant at the centers on the obverse, more delicate gold peripheral toning on the reverse, and mostly bright. Nicely struck and we see a fine double profile on Liberty. Moderate hairlines, as usually seen.

1826 Capped Bust Half Dollar. . O-109. MS-63+. A beautiful coin that boasts deep gray toning around the edges and much brighter silver at the centers. Liberty is quite well frosted and our consigner believes this may have been some sort of presentation strike. We do note there is a fine scratch down Liberty's neck to her drapery, but is can only be seen with a glass. Minor hairlines in the fields. Regardless of what you call this coin, it is appealing and one that many collectors will enjoy in the future, as I'm sure they've enjoyed it in the past.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Lot 1005
1826 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-55. This sparkler will liven up your collection without breaking the bank. The surfaces show light wear only on the high points of the design, and the toning is the style found in old album collections, with dark blue around the edges, white at the center of the obverse, the reverse similar, but the centers are toned in reddish-gold hues. Luster beneath the colors in the fields adds to the allure. A few hairlines, but they are faint, and no other problems worth noting were found.

Abundant luster and generally a very nice coin overall.

Lot 1020
1829 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-58. A beautiful coin that boasts deep blue around the edge, and bright white luster elsewhere. Clean surfaces for the grade.
An interesting die state here, the obverse crack is present from the tenth and eleventh star to the lower curls, and the stars are drawn towards the dentils. On the reverse, all the arrow shafts are broken from die lapping, and the diagnostics have changed with the eagle's claw ending just above the right tip of the serif of C (on early die state coins, this claw extends past the left side of the serif, and the arrow shafts are sharp). One for the specialist.

1830 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Large 0. AU-53. This one has a light scrape down from Liberty's face to the second and third stars, and moderate hairlines. The coin is now toned a medium silvery gray with darker golds at the rims. Boldly struck, but the hairlines are somewhat distracting on this one. For reasons unknown most of the survivors of the Bust half series show hairlines. Perhaps all the coins from the Economite Hoard were cleaned when they were recovered using some sort of abraisive (like baking soda), and hence so many of these show hairlines. Whatever the cause, that's the way they are, and this one is no different. Pleasing eye appeal at a glance.
