Lot 673
1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legged. NGC graded MS-64. Here is one of the few near gems to be graded by either grading service of this immensely popular variety. We note some tawny gold toning on the obverse, with a splash of multicolored hues around the bison's head on the reverse. NGC has graded 105 this high, with 36 graded higher, similar numbers at PCGS. Well struck and always in demand for the curious feature on the reverse.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Lot 674
1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legged. PCGS graded AU-55. One of the great stories in American numismatics, this clashed die was lapped a bit too agressively and the foreleg of the bison was filed past the bone clear down to the field! All that remains is the poor beast's hoof. Clean surfaces and a good strike, with a full horn on the bison. Natural tawny gold in color.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Lot 675
1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legged. AU-50. Steel gray and clean for the grade, with just a few light hairline scratches on the obverse. Well struck on the obverse, the reverse is characteristically weak.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

Lot 676
1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legged. EF-45. One of the classic rarities of the series, the "3-legged" variety was created by lapping the reverse die to remove clash marks. A bit too much metal was removed from the, including the foreleg of the bison. A couple of minor ticks from circulation, but a full horn and all the diagnostics are clear. Perfect for the collector.
Estimated Value $300 - 375.

Lot 682
1943-S Jefferson Nickel struck on a Zinc Coated Steel Planchet! NGC graded MS-63. An extremely rare error, perhaps even Unique, as Judd notes the existence, but doesn't state if more than one is known. This looks very similar to a regular Jefferson nickel of the war period, but when examining the lettering and date, we note they are drawn up towards the rim as the smaller cent planchet expanded into the collar during striking. Excellent surfaces for the grade, with no troublesome marks or scratches that are so often seen when a smaller planchet is used than normal, the ejection equipment didn't scrape or mark this piece at all. Good luster throughout and a premium error that is extremely rare and almost never available. This particular coin had been put away for many years and was recently coaxed out of hiding for our sale. The error is noted on the NGC insert, and currently in holder #1270632-002.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,500.

Lot 683
1943-S Jefferson Nickel struck on a Fiji/Australia Sixpence Planchet! NGC graded AU-58. A delightful error which is possibly unique, or certainly extremely rare at least. The smaller planchet was fed into the coining press and this dies produced a fairly normal looking Jefferson nickel, however, the right side shows only a fraction of the lettering and base of the digits in the date (enough so to identify this as a 1943). On the reverse, the large "S" over Monticello confirms this is a wartime issue. Somewhat softly struck on the steps and upper curls as this thinner planchet simply didn't have enough metal between the dies to fill in all the high points. Apparently this one circulated briefly before being saved, but is still very lustrous and appealing. A foremost rarity for the error specialist, and while not as well known as the 1943 copper Lincoln cents, is no doubt rarer and struck during the same time period and circumstances. The error is noted on the NGC insert, and currently in holder #1270632-004.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500.

Lot 684
Jefferson Silver War Nickel struck 40 % Off Center (No date or mintmark). PCGS graded MS-62. This coin was struck off center towards 7:30 o'clock, just enough to miss the last digit of the date, and enough on the reverse to miss the mintmark. As this is struck on a silver planchet, we know that the date would have been 1942 to 1945, when the necessities of a mechanized war required more useful nickel for the war effort, while silver had little use by comparison. Hence the composition of nickels was changed to copper, silver and manganese during the war. The surfaces of this coin show five dull scrapes hidden on Jefferson's coat, and two more short ones from the rim to his nose, and these account for the grade. Many off center coins have these scratches, perhaps they are caused by the planchet ejection equipment or some similar process. On the reverse, there is a minor dark planchet streak in the blank area.
Estimated Value $300 - 350.
