  Israel. Palestine, c.1882 Rare Colony Rishon Le Zion Token. 22.5 mm. bronze. A very rare medal issued by this colony of Russian immigrant Jews. The obverse features colonists in front of a pair of peaked windows, and the inscription (in Hebrew): "If I Forget Thee O Jerusalem, May My Right Hand Forget its Cunning"; the reverse pictures a plow in a field and the Hebrew inscription: "The first to Zion here they are, and to Jerusalem a portent I shall give"; at bottom: "Colonia Rishon LeZion. Described in the Harry Warshaw Collection as "RRR." Extremely Fine. Loop removed from top, as usual. Estimate Value $250 - UP

  Israel. Palestine, 1918 Eretz Israel Volunteers Medal. By Boris Schatz (Bezalel). size: 24.5 mm, 6 gm. bronze. Obverse is antithetical design of Roman Judaea Capta coinage, except "Bat Zion" (Daughter of Zion) is shown freeing herself from Roman captivity; the Hebrew inscription in exergue is "Judea Freeing Herself," and the medalist's name "B Sh Bezalel" is at the left. The reverse features a Star of David, with the Hebrew legend "For the Volunteers of the Nation in Eretz Israel," plus the Hebrew date 1849 for "1918" (counting from 70 CE, the destruction of the Second Temple). These were issued on July 4, 1918 to local Jewish volunteers setting out to join the 40th Royal Fusiliers (one of the 3 Jewish battalions of the Jewish Legion. This was the first modern military medal ever issued by Jews for Jews - and more so for service in the land of Israel. Very rare. Weakly struck Fine/Very Fine, with clean chocolately brown surfaces.   Israel. Palestine and Israel Interesting Group of 24 Paper Tokens, Banknotes and Historic Newspapers. Featured is rare example of Matzoh Money Token, with hand stamp, issued by Dr. Moshe Wallach in Jerusalem and given to the poor just before Passover in 1915. Also, tokens issued by the Israel Army for purchases on Shabbat during the Six-Day War, an insurance policy dated January 1948 issued by Tel Aviv company, with Kofer Ha'Yeshuv and Palestine Revenue Stamps. Plus train tokens, bus tickets, etc. But there's more!-Israel Army newspapers issued just before and after the Six-Day War, with one featuring pictures of Chief Chaplain Shlomo Goren and soldiers rejoicing at the Western Wall. Crowned shield of arms, supported by flanking griffins, standing on pediment with lion mask below. Reverse; St John the Baptist stands frontal, head left, in animal-skin tunic and draped by cloak, holding small bannered cross. Exceptional strike, with centers only just a bit soft, faint adjustment marks visible in the shield, appealing muted luster, very clean, lovely old toning consisting of softly iridescent pinks and coppers, or blues, in the recesses.
