Lot 1892
Foringer, Alonzo Earl: American Bank Note Company, Magnificent, Rare, Original Oil on Canvas Concept Art, Ca. 1920s (1878- 1948) Alonzo Earl Foringer celebrated magazine illustrator for Scribner's, a World War I propaganda poster designer and an acclaimed muralist whose works can be seen throughout the US. He was also sought after as a bank note designer for American, Canadian and European banks. The American Bank Note Company became the dominant security printer in the United States from 1858, the result of a merger of seven of the leading bank note designers and manufacturers of the time. As the leader of the industry, it designed and produced a wide variety of printed material for the industry intentionally, ranging from stocks and bonds, cheques and other fiscal documents to banknotes for institutions and governments of the world.
Offered is one of his bank note concepts and based on the history of his other pieces, they indeed were painted on a fairly large scale. This one measures 37 x 63" and is in superiror condition. The masterful artistry of Foringer's work is on full display here as a man plows his fields with oxen as the Goddess Fortuna holds a cornucopia, considered a sign of abundance. We are not sure if Foringer designed this trial note for the US or abroad, but we do know it was never engraved. Absolutely beautiful. Painting is not heavy but due to size, outside shipping required to which we can recommend an excellent and reasonable company. Estimate Value $3,500 - UP
