Lot 198
1794 S-67 R3 Head of 1795 PCGS graded Unc Details Scratch. A frosty nearly mint state cent that has an obvious planchet lamination flake on the truncation over the 9, and someone added a fine vertical scratch up from the top of the flake. The cent was lightly cleaned long ago and is now toned an attractive frosty light to medium chocolate brown. The toning looks original and the eye appeal of this cent would be outstanding if not for the delamination and short scratch. MDS, Breen state III, showing clear die clashmarks on both sides. Called AU55 net EF40 and tied for CC#11 in the Noyes census, photo #27563.2. Our grade is net EF45. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

1794 S-67 R3 Head of 1795 NGC graded VF35. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. No roughness or verdigris, only small contact marks scattered over both sides. The notable marks are a light scratch hidden in the toning left of the cap, a collection of nicks at EN in CENT, and a rim nick over the right edge of the E in UNITED. MDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on the obverse. A smooth, attractive cent in spite of the minor contact marks. Our grade is F15+. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. NGC population 6 in VF; 6 finer for the variety. Estimate Value $2,250 - UP

Lot 200
1794 S-67 R3 Head of 1795 PCGS graded F12. Covered with extremely fine roughness under reddish steel brown and chocolate toning. The devices are a lighter shade of brown and the eye appeal is nice in spite of the imperfect surfaces. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a couple small flakes on the unstruck portion of the planchet at the bottom of the obverse. Struck 10% off center to K-12 leaving part of LIBERTY and the fraction off the planchet. The date is strong and the legends are easily readable except for the fraction, which is faint due to being off center in that direction. In addition this planchet has a plain edge and the diameter is significantly larger than normal for a lettered edge planchet at 31.5mm versus the usual 28.0 to 28.5mm diameter. The weight is 200.4 grains, which is consistent with the 208-grain standard for lettered edge 1794 cent planchets that have experienced this much wear. Off-center 1794 cents are extremely rare, and this is the only one known to us that also has a plain edge (apparently it failed to pass through the edge lettering machine prior to being struck). A truly remarkable early mint error. Our grade is net VG10. The attribution, Trollan provenance, and 10% Off-Center Mint Error are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

Lot 201
1794 S-68 R5 Head of 1795 VF20. Five points sharper but the initials "JWA" are lightly scratched into the field left of the bottom of the cap. These initials are faint and very easy to miss, and the remainder of the planchet is smooth and choice. The only additional marks are a small nick in the hair under the B in LIBERTY and a very light rim bruise over the first T in STATES. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. LDS, Breen state V, with a clearly defined die crack slanting all the way across the obverse. In addition the edge lettering is blundered with FOR lightly impressed under the RE in HUNDRED so it reads ONE HUNDFROERD A DOLLAR. A beautiful cent in spite of the initials, and it is easy to see why Henry Chapman selected this cent to be plated (both sides) in his 1923 reference on the cents of 1794. Graded VF30 net F15 and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes census, his photo #39967. Bland says VF20 and tied for CC6. Comes with a great provenance that includes some of the most famous names in large cent collecting and research. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP

1794 S-69 R3 Head of 1795 PCGS graded XF40, CAC Approved. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and show only trivial contact marks. The best identifying marks are a tiny pinprick between the tops of the 9 & 4 and a trio of impressed dentils under the E in CENT. M-LDS, Breen state II late, with die clashmarks on both sides. Graded VF25 by Del Bland. Noyes says VF25 net VF20, his photo #20017. Our grade is VF25. Comes with a nice provenance that has been traced back well over 60 years. 1794 S-70 R2 Head of 1795 PCGS graded AU50. Frosty reddish steel brown and chocolate with light olive toning on the devices. Just a few minor contact marks including two fine scratches near the dentils in the field before the face, a couple nicks on the cap, and a small rim bruise at the bust tip. The obverse of the planchet is smooth and satiny but the reverse has numerous microscopic striations or fine laminations in the planchet, mostly on the left side (as struck). These striations are nearly invisible to the unaided eye. No corrosion or verdigris. M-LDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on both sides. Graded EF40 net VF35 by Noyes, his photo #20018. Our grade is net VF35. The attribution and Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer for the variety, 2 in 58, 2 in 62. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 PCGS graded AU53. Frosty light chocolate brown with subtle hints of reddish chocolate brown toning in protected areas at the bottom of the reverse. Smooth surfaces, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. Just a few insignificant marks including a thin vertical nick in the center of the jawline and a tiny nick inside the top of the E in CENT. MDS, Breen state III. The die crack at TY is clear but the small lump has not formed between the hair and the T. A slightly curved planchet clip (as struck) affects the dentils left of the date and the opposing ones at TE in STATES. In addition there is doubling from die bounce on the tip of the nose, lips, and chin with stronger doubling along the upper edge of the bust. Called VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#14 in the Noyes census, his photo #58200. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. A very attractive example of the Exact Head of 1795 variety (which was graded MS62BN by PCGS when it sold in our Koshkarian sale on 2/12/2017). The attribution and Koshkarian-Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 1 finer in 55 for the variety. Estimate Value $14,000 - UP

1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge PCGS graded VF35. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with both tones delicately woodgrained on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. No notable contact marks on either side. This cent was struck at least 3 times (even though the PCGS label says "Flipover Double Struck"). The first two strikes were nearly centered on the planchet but were offset by a 5-10 degree rotation between those impressions. This is clearly visible at AMER where the obverse cap is boldly doubled with a 1-2 millimeter separation between those impressions. The double struck planchet was then flipped over and struck once more slightly off center to K-10 but with all the designs on the planchet. Ample evidence of the undertype first two strikes is visible on the right half of both sides. An absolutely choice example of a spectacular mint error. Our grade is VF20 Choice. The attribution, "Mint Error: Flipover Double Struck," and Trollan provenance are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1795 S-77 R3 Plain Edge PCGS graded VF35. Very attractive frosty olive brown and steel. Smooth and essentially flawless; a choice cent. A small planchet flake on the shoulder can help identify this piece. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with die cracks on the reverse and sinking in the die that severely weakens ST in STATES. Otherwise the date is bold and the legends are strong except for weakness on the E in CENT. Our grade is VF25+ Choice. The attribution and Reiver-Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge VG10. A few points sharper but covered with very fine roughness on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown. No verdigris and the only notable contact marks are some old, dull scratches in the field behind the portrait and a dull diagonal scratch on the right side of the O in ONE to the left side of the C in CENT. This cent was struck twice and flipped over between the impressions. The first strike was positioned about 10% off center to K-9. The cent was then reinserted into the coining chamber but flipped over before being struck a second time, this one nearly centered between the dies. Strong evidence of the first strike shows on both sides including a complete 1795 date where the fraction should be on the second strike. A very rare type of double (or triple) mint error, and the error is obvious to the unaided eye. Noyes photo #38920. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

1796 S-85 R5- Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF20. Glossy medium olive brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and the only defects are a tiny pinprick at the tip of the nose and a shallow planchet chip off the end of the pole with an opposing larger smooth planchet void that obliterates the O in OF. Otherwise this cent is choice for the grade. EDS, Breen state I, before any cracks or clashmarks. The date is clear and the legends are complete with the exception of the O in OF thanks to the planchet void. Noyes photo #59517. Our grade is F12. Frosty medium chocolate brown with hints of reddish steel and olive brown in a few of the protected areas on both sides, mostly at TED-STA. The surfaces are smooth and nearly void of contact marks. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, prior to any die cracks or crumbling on the obverse. A beautiful example of the 1797 Plain Edge with Single Leaves at the top of the wreath variety. Our grade is VF25. And it comes with a wonderful provenance. The attribution and Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer for the variety, 2 in 45, 2 in 58.
