Smooth and nearly flawless except for a small punch mark at the right foot of the T in LIBERTY and a dull rim nick at ME in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state V early. The die crack through the U is strong and it extends all the way up to the leaves under the first T in STATES where it fades out. Lot 150
1794 S-43 R2 G6. Sharpness VF35 but covered with uniform moderate granularity. No verdigris or contact marks. Medium steel brown fading to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. The roughness has weakened some of the devices but the date and most of the legends remain clear, the only significant weakness being at OF AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine radial die crack through the U in UNITED. Struck with the reverse misaligned to K-4.5 and rotated 45 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot orientation. In addition there is a clearly defined "railroad rim" error on the edge from the U in UNITED clockwise to the O in OF. The planchet may have been a bit too large for the collar and the collar made a strong impression on the edge during the strike. Or perhaps the planchet was positioned slightly off center in the coining chamber and part of it engaged the collar during the strike. The planchet is quite thick, thicker than normal, and this may have caused the problem. Regardless of the cause, this is an interesting type of mint error; the first your cataloger has seen on an early date cent. Weight 204.6 grains; diameter 28.3mm. Estimate Value $750 - UP

1794 S-44 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter frosty steel brown in protected areas. Sharply struck and nearly flawless showing only trivial ticks and just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable mark is a barely visible planchet lamination well-hidden in the hair below LIB (as struck). Scarce E-MDS, Breen state II, with an uncracked reverse. There is a fine but clearly defined double profile from the forelock down to the chin. A very nice cent. Our grade is EF45+. The attribution and Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 5 finer for the variety, 3 in 58, 2 in 63. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP

1794 S-44 R1 VF20. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but covered with extremely fine granularity with several small spots or patches of deeper roughness on both sides. The notable ones are at the bottom of the cap and a larger patch into the wreath under UN in UNITED. Some of these depressions look like chips caused by planchet slag, but they are distracting either way. The only raised corrosion is a spot at the dentil tips left of the bottom of the cap. No contact marks. Rather frosty medium steel brown and light olive. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state V, with die cracks on both sides. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees clockwise and there is a narrow but clearly defined double profile on the nose, lips, chin, and top of the head. 1794 NC-5 R8 NGC graded VG Details Damaged. The sharpness of most of the devices is VG but the planchet is slightly bent and partially straightened causing areas to be flattened. In addition, there are several light rim bruises, mostly on the obverse, and the strongest ones are at the top of the cap. Additional contact marks include some dull nicks in the field before the face, a strong vertical nick up from the C in CENT, and a lighter horizontal one under the N in ONE. Mostly glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate brown toning covering the highpoints. The raised areas are smooth while the fields and protected areas are covered with very fine roughness that’s mostly hidden under the glossy natural patina. The date is clear and the legends are complete, although STATES OF and ERICA are weak but readable with some effort. This variety is a product of the mating of the obverse die used for the NC-10, S-43, and S-44 varieties with the reverse die used for the S-45. It is the discovery coin for the variety and the finer of only 2 known. No additional examples have been discovered in spite of diligent searching over several decades. Called VG8 net AG3 and finest known in both census lists, Noyes photo #21091. Our grade is net AG3 as well. Plated in the Noyes and Breen books to illustrate the variety. Comes with a wonderful provenance that includes no less than six collectors who earned the distinction of completing a numbered Sheldon die variety set of large cents, 1793-1814. The attribution and Holmes-Mervis provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $22,500 - UP

1794 S-45 R5+ F12. Sharpness VF25 but very lightly smoothed and recolored dark steel and olive brown. There is no hint of roughness or corrosion so the smoothing must have been inspired by some contact marks. There is a shallow pinch on the rim under the 179 and a few minor rim nicks on both sides plus a thin diagonal nick on the cheek left of the nostril. The date and legends are all strong. M-LDS, Breen state II early. The die crack at IC in AMERICA is very light. Not perfect but sharply detailed and still decent for this tough die variety. Estimate Value $7,000 - UP

M-LDS, Breen state IV, with the small area between die cracks at the top of the 4 just starting to rise as a retained cud before finally breaking away completely (Breen's state V). A clear double profile shows on the nose. A cent with great eye appeal. Called VF30 and tied for CC#12 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 and tied for CC#10, his photo #36528. Our grade is VF30. Lot 161
1794 NC-9 R7+ PCGS graded F12, CAC Approved. Glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices on both sides. The two-tone appearance accents the devices and adds to the eye appeal. The surfaces are nice and appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals traces of extremely fine roughness in protected areas. No verdigris and only a few trivial signs of contact. A small dig under the U in UNITED just touches the leaf below, and this mark can help identify the cent. The date and legends are complete and easily readable, but the 4 and a few of the letters are a bit weak. EDS, Breen state I. The vertical die crack that is always present on the reverse (and accounts for it's early retirement) is relatively light, extending from the dentils under the fraction up to the N in CENT where it fades away. The die variety was discovered in January 1974 and since then only 3 more have been found in spite of diligent searching. It's also important to note here that the other 3 examples have significant surface roughness and are considered "scudzy" by EAC standards. The variety is from a very brief marriage of the obverse die for S-47, 48, & 49 with a new reverse die, and it was struck following S-47 & S-48 but before S-49. This is the plate coin for the die variety in both the Breen and Noyes references. Graded F15 net VG7 and CC#1 of only 4 known in the Noyes census, his photo #21360. Del Bland says VG7 as well and finest known in his census of the same 4 coins. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8. The attribution and Naftzger-Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the finer of only 2 examples graded at both services. Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1794 NC-9 R7+ AG3. Sharpness F12 or slightly better but covered with moderate corrosion on all but the highpoints, which are smooth and glossy. There is some black verdigris in protected areas. The only marks are a light rim bruise at E in LIBERTY and another over AM in AMERICA. Chocolate brown with dark olive in protected areas. The date is weak but readable (weakness from corrosion, not wear), and the legends are complete except for ATES, which is very weak due to roughness. LDS, Breen state II late. The bisecting reverse die crack is strong, much longer and stronger than on the previous lot, and this "fatal" crack explains the early demise of the reverse die and subsequent rarity of the variety. The reverse is plated in the Noyes and Morley references. Called F12 net AG3 in the Noyes and Bland census lists. CC#4 of the 4 examples known, but all are in low grade and have imperfect surfaces. This is the latest die state seen. A great cent in spite of the low grade, and it comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

Sharply struck EDS with full rims around both sides and no hint of swelling on the reverse. The fine repunching on the LI in LIBERTY is clear. In spite of the roughness all the stars are visible on the reverse, although some are distorted a bit by the fine granularity. 1794 S-56 R3 NGC graded AU55. The so-called "Office-Boy Reverse" variety due to the amateurish layout of the legends on the reverse die. Sharpness closer to mint state but there is a small patch of very fine verdigris over the C in AMERICA plus microscopic hairlines covering the cheek and neck and a fine hairline scratch from the Y to the nose before the eye. Several small planchet voids also show near the dentils over F-AMERIC, as struck. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and quite attractive, only a few microscopic marks of no significance. Glossy medium brown with very faint traces of old fingerprints covering much of the obverse. MDS, Breen state II, showing strong die clashmarks on both sides. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW from a perfect head-to-foot orientation. Called AU50 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes photo #37134. Our grade is AU50. Plated in the Breen encyclopedia to illustrate his die state III, but the dies clearly match his state II. A wonderful example of this popular variety. 1794 S-60 R3 PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Hints of satiny mint luster remain visible in protected areas, especially on the reverse, and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding in every respect. Two trivial ticks on the jawline and a pair of barely visible rim nicks over LI are the only notable marks, and they are insignificant. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. This cent is plated in the 1979 book on the cents of 1794 prepared by Tom Morley to illustrate the AU55 grade for the die variety. And this cent does have the eye appeal of an AU cent. Graded EF45 Choice and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #31705. Bland says EF45 and CC#4. Our grade is EF45 Choice as well. 1794 NC-6 R8- NGC graded VF30. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, void of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. However there are three dull, light scratches in the field before the portrait and a half dozen thinner, sharper scratches on the reverse, mostly inside the wreath around ONE CENT. Otherwise this cent is nearly choice with only a few trivial contact marks, none notable. Only three examples are known from this die paring mating the obverse die of S-64 & S-65 with a different reverse die that appears to have failed spectacularly, perhaps on the initial strike. All three of the NC-6 cents have significant swelling in the center of the reverse and a strong radial die crack from the rim right of the D in UNITED.
