Lot 812
1856. PCGS graded Proof 64. CAC. PQ. Popular key date. The strike is sharp on all devices and each minute feather is bold on the eagle. A few ancient toning specks are about the only signs of age, as the surfaces are fresh and reflective. A splendid example of this prized issue, with a tiny mintage and every so few that offer the quality and eye appeal present here. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent is the first appearance of the soon to be fully adopted small cent of this design, formally launched in 1857. A visual treat and worthy of a strong bid. Only 1,500 struck.

The Flying Eagle cent replaced the unpopular Brraided Hair large cent, which was struck until early 1857. These coins were seen as too large and heavy, and this smaller, light weight Flying Eagle cents were are welcome change. Pop 220; 69 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 2037) Estimate Value $17,000 - 18,000

1859. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Well struck with lovely light even toning on both sides. A rare single year type coin, especially so in gem proof. The obverse design continued through the end of the series with minor modification until 1909. These included the postioning of Liberty's head and of course the planchet composition, which included a 12 percent nickel alloy along with 88 percent copper, even this modest amount of nickel gave these cents a whitish hue in color. In 1864, the nickel portion was removed, and planchets were changed to a French bronze blend of 95 perccent copper, 5 percent tin and zinc.

For the reverse, there is an open wreath, with no shield at the top. This feature was changed in 1860 to include a small shield at the top of the wreath, creating a single year type coin for the 1859 Indian cent. An important offering for the type or date specialist. Pop 6; 8 finer at NGC in CAM and UCAM. Estimate Value $3,500 - 3,700
