1817 N-9 R2 PCGS graded F15. Glossy light to medium steel brown. Smooth and attractive, just worn. The only notable mark is a minor rim bruise at star 1. EDS. This piece was struck twice, and both impressions were reasonably well centered on the planchet. One strike was a reverse brockage and the other was a normal strike with the obverse struck over the normal (raised, not incuse) side of the reverse brockage strike. It appears the normal strike came first followed by the reverse brockage. But regardless of the sequence, this is a spectacular mint error. Graded VG10 net VG8 by Noyes, his photo #31835. 1817 N-10 R1 VF30+. Attractive frosty steel brown and medium chocolate. Smooth and nearly flawless; a small spot of lighter toning from a shallow planchet flake in the field under star 4 and a spot of darker toning left of the O in OF are the notable marks. M-LDS. This piece is an interesting mint error. The reverse is centered on the planchet but the obverse is badly misaligned to K-6. In addition it appears that there was another planchet in the coining chamber slightly overlapping this one when it was struck. The pressure created a beveled clip affecting the 7 and star 13 but none of the reverse, which looks completely normal. Take a close look. Estimate Value $750 - UP

1817 N-10 R1 Counterstamped Brunk D-302 PCGS graded G06. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and problem-free, just worn. Stamped DERINGER above and PHILA below on the obverse. Each letter of the stamp is well formed and easy to read. This stamp is from Henry Deringer (often misspelled Derringer) who was born in 1786 and died in 1868. In 1806 he started the Deringer Armory, a business that made guns in Philadelphia and in time he became a big supplier of firearms to the United States government. In 1852 he designed and began manufacturing the famous single shot Deringer pistol. One of these small handguns was used by John Wilkes Booth to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln on 14 April 1865. The stamp is extremely rare and this is the Brunk plate coin that illustrates the design of the stamp. Brunk lists two coins with this stamp: the coin offered here and an 1832 Half Dollar. A wonderful combination of rarity and historic significance. Our grade is G4. The attribution, Brunk D-302 Deringer Phila counterstamp, and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. This cent was struck two times, and both strikes were reasonably well centered on the planchet. The first strike was normal but the coin failed to eject from the coining chamber and a new blank planchet was inserted on top of this struck cent. During the second strike the obverse die made a slightly shifted second impression on the obverse of this cent while the reverse (the hammer die) was pressed into the new planchet, thereby creating a new cent with a reverse brockage. Lot 82
1817 N-16 R1 15-Star Obverse PCGS graded VG8. Slightly glossy steel brown and chocolate. The reverse is smooth but the obverse is covered with very fine roughness. No verdigris. The notable marks are a rim nick just left of the date and another at star 11. EDS. Struck 15-20% off-center to K-5, and the reverse is an incuse brockage impression of another obverse. Obviously this planchet was inserted into the coining chamber a bit off center and on top of a previously struck cent that was still in the coining chamber. The obverse then was struck by the obverse die while the reverse was pressed into the obverse of the previously struck cent. Our grade is net G6. Another really nice mint error in this collection. The attribution, 20% Off-Center Brockage Reverse error, and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

1817 N-16 R1 15-Star Obverse PCGS graded F15. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and very nice for the grade, nearly flawless in every respect. A tiny diagonal nick midway between star 1 and the chin is the only notable mark, and it is insignificant. EDS. This is a full obverse brockage strike with no rotation between the obverse and reverse impressions (which means the previously struck cent that was stuck in the coining chamber did not move between the two impressions). A premium example of a very dramatic mint error; worthy of the finest collection. Noyes graded VF20, his photo #39583. Our grade is F12. The attribution, 1st Strike Brockage Mint Error, and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1817 N-17 R4 PCGS graded AU53. Frosty medium chocolate brown with some lighter brown toning on the left side of the obverse. Hints of flowline luster show in the protected areas on both sides. The only defects are a few areas of extremely faint roughness including one under star 8, another at star 11, and a small one just right of the 7 in the date. MDS with the right top of the first T in STATES clearly raised due to advanced die cracks in that area, but there is no die crack up from the top of that E. An important example of this tough die variety; the finest grades only EF45 by EAC standards. Our grade is EF40. The attribution and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer for the variety at PCGS, 2 in 55, 1 in 58. Estimate Value $3,250 - UP

Noyes graded VF30 sharpness net F12 and finest of the late die state in his census, his photo #20764. Comes with an important provenance. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
