Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 439
1797 S-131 R2 Stemless Wreath G4. A few points sharper, especially on the reverse, but covered with moderate roughness. No marks or verdigris, and the surfaces looks like they were cleaned with acid long ago. The toning is a very original looking light to medium chocolate brown. Struck 15% off center to K-1. The date and Stemless Wreath feature are both clear but LIBERTY and the denominator are off the planchet. Estimate Value $300 - UP

Lot 440
1797 S-137 R2 F12. Glossy medium chocolate brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints. Slightly sharper where the designs were properly struck up but there are weak areas caused by debris on the die, especially on the hair ribbons (a common occurrence for this variety). The only notable mark is a small spot of greenish verdigris nestled under the R in LIBERTY. EDS, Breen state I, before any swelling or die cracks on the reverse. The date is strong. Estimate Value $300 - UP

Lot 441
1797 S-139 R1 G5. A couple points sharper but there are areas of fine corrosion on both sides. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. M-LDS with die cracks on the obverse. This cent was struck three times. The first strike was off center 5-10%, the second was centered on the planchet but rotated about 20 degrees relative to the first (counterclockwise on the obverse, clockwise on the reverse), and another strike just nipped the planchet leaving a strongly impressed arc of dentils at K-7 on the reverse. Obvious undertype from the first strike shows on both sides, especially left of the lowest curl and at STATES which reads STASTATES. Another neat mint error that is visible to the unaided eye, and it comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $400 - UP

1802 S-231 R1 Stemless Wreath PCGS graded XF40. Somewhat glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. 1802 S-235 R3 VF35. Sharpness AU50 but there is a patch of fine corrosion with some verdigris at TE in STATES down to CE in CENT. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with some lighter brown and tan in protected areas on the obverse. MDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on both sides including at RTY in LIBERTY. Not perfect but still at the lower end of the condition census for the variety. Estimate Value $600 - UP

Lot 450
1803 S-259 R4 Small Date, Large Fraction G4. Sharpness F12 or better but covered with uniform moderate to strong granularity. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy dark olive brown. The obverse is double struck with obvious doubling more than a millimeter wide along the profile from the forehead down to the bottom of the neck. The reverse is an incuse impression of the obverse and the doubling on that side is more subtle, clearest in the drapery lines. The impressions on both sides are centered on the planchet. Apparently this planchet was inserted into the coining chamber before the previously struck cent was ejected, and it was struck twice between the obverse die and the obverse of the previously struck cent. Another obvious mint error. Estimate Value $400 - UP
