Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 418
1794 C-6a R5+ G4. Small Edge Letters. Glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The two-tone appearance accents the devices and adds to the excellent eye appeal. Essentially just well worn with smooth surfaces. The only notable mark is a light, curved mark hidden in the hair right of the bottom of the cap. The strike is a bit uneven leaving the lower right edge of the reverse weak while the upper left part of the reverse is relatively strong. The date is complete and clear but LIBERTY is quite weak. The Small Edge Letters are complete and easily readable. Struck with the reverse die rotated 15 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot orientation. A decent lower grade example of this rare die combination (the Large Edge Letters version is unique). Weight 101.7 grains. Estimate Value $1,750 - UP

1794 C-8 R5 VG10. Sharpness VF30 but the planchet is covered with fine granularity on all but the highpoints of the devices which are smooth. The roughness is a bit more advanced at NT in CENT but there is no verdigris on either side. The only notable marks are a tiny rim bruise over the E in LIBERTY and an even smaller one over the C in AMERICA. Dark olive brown and steel. LDS, Manley state 2.0, with a clear radial die crack from the rim through the second T in STATES to the wreath below. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Weight 102.0 grains. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

Lot 421
1795 C-2a R3 Punctuated Date, Lettered Edge VG10+. Double Struck on Clipped Planchet. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel, close to F12. The surfaces are smooth and nearly flawless and the eye appeal of this piece is outstanding for the grade. The best identifying marks are a tiny rim nick at BE in LIBERTY and a very tiny rim bruise over the A in STATES. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with strong swelling at AME and a faint die clashmark connecting the F in OF to the leaf below. The reverse is double struck, but the shift between impressions was less than a millimeter. Nonetheless, doubling is clearly visible on the wreath, legends, and dentils. In addition, the planchet is clipped at the top of the cap and over UNIT reaching slightly inside the dentils on both sides (as struck). The arc of this clip is consistent with a large cent rather than a half cent, so it is quite possible this planchet was cut from a spoiled large cent. Regardless it's a beautiful double-error half cent. And it comes with a great provenance for a half cent. Weight 102.2 grains. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
Ex Paul Munson-Roger S. Cohen, Jr., Superior 2/2/1992:45-R. Tettenhorst (The Davy Collection), McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/19/2010:22 (includes the Cohen collection envelope).

Lot 422
1795 C-5b R4 No Pole with Thick Planchet VG10. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate with lots of frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas on both sides. No roughness or verdigris, only light contact marks. The best identifying mark is a tiny spot of reddish brown toning on the 7 in the date. LDS with severe swelling under the bisecting die crack that slants across the reverse from the first T in STATES to the R in AMERICA. The date is weak (as usual on this variety) but it is readable, and LIBERTY is strong. Weight 119.9 grains, significantly heavier than the 84.0-grain standard for the normal thin planchet strikes of this die combination, which identifies this as having been struck on a planchet cut from a spoiled large cent. Estimate Value $750 - UP
