Berlioz, Hector -- ALS Re "Mass of the Dead" Composed for General Charles-Marie, Comte Denys de Damrémont. (1803 - 1869) French composer. Autograph letter signed "H. Berlioz," one page, 7¾ x 6½", in French, n.p., December 29, 1838. To an unidentified person, saying he is sending six copies of his Mass of the Dead (not present) which he composed for the funeral service of General Damrémort [who was killed in the Revolution of 1830]. He is also attaching the invoice. Light toning; small paper loss at upper right corner, affecting nothing.

In 1837, Berlioz was asked by Adrien de Gasparin, Minister of the Interior of France, to compose a Requiem Mass to remember soldiers who died in the Revolution of July 1830.The premiere was conducted by François Habeneck on December 5, 1837 in commemoration of General Damrémont and the soldiers killed in the Siege of Constantine. General Charles-Marie, comte Denys de Damrémont (1783-1837) was a Lieutenant General in the French infantry. At the time of his death at the Siege of Constantine, he was Governor-General of Algeria. Grieg, Edvard -- Autograph Postcard Signed to an Organist Friend in Copenhagen With Later ANS From Grieg's Widow. (1843-1907) Norwegian composer and pianist. Autograph postcard signed, one page, in Norwegian,Treldhaugen [Norway], Dec. 22 (19)01. Addressed in his hand to "Professor-Organist Gotfred Matthisen-Hansen, Copenhagen K…" Grieg sends Christmas greetings to his friend: "As you can see, I press Helga's hand and Nina presses yours, Getfred. So: Merry Christmas to both. Our thoughts go to Denmark. May we soon meet there. Your kind affectionate, Nina and Edvard Grieg." Grieg was one of the leading Romantic Era composers known for his many folk compositions. His most famous work was an adaptation of Ibsen's Peer Gynt which contained the memorable excerpt entitled, "In the Hall of the Mountain King."

Together with an ANS, in Danish, of his widow, Nina Grieg (1845-1935) Danish-Norwegian pianist and soprano; she was also Edvard Grieg's first cousin and often performed concerts with him. Two pages, 3½ x 4½", Hotel Momopal, Thursday Evening, Feb. 6, 1925. "Dear Pastor Fibiger, A thousand thanks for your kindness. Unfortunately we cannot have the pleasure of coming, as I am expecting a lady from Malmo for a rehearsal Wednesday afternoon and that cannot be changed. Titled "How Cuban Dances become German Students Songs, and American ditties become Italian Mountainerrs melodies." With holograph corrections and at least one from the editor about the long title. Hoffman notes seeing two Italian pipers while sitting on the piazza at his seaside resort in New Hamshire and being disappointed that they were playing the tune of "Climbing up the golden Stairs," when he had been hoping for "something fresh from the Tyrol…" He gives a second example involving himself. Massenet, Jules -- Two Autograph Letters Signed. (1842-1912) French composer best known for his operas. "Méditation" a symphonic intermezzo written for solo violin and orchestra from his opera Thaïs, has to be one of the lovliest pieces ever written. Two autograph letters signed "J. Massenet," one in 1880, in purple ink and the other in 1907, in brown ink, both to unidentified recipients. In both letters he blames his travels for not having received/answered their letters. The 1880 letter mentions a piano concerto. The 1907 letter mentions a project, says he is leaving for the south of France, and wishes he could stay close to his "good chimney." Meyerbeer, Giacomo -- A Friendly ALS From The Great German Opera Composer. (1791-1864) German opera composer (original name Jakob Liebmann Meyer Beer) who created in Paris a vogue for spectacular romantic opera. Autograph letter signed, "Meyerbeer", one page, in French, 7½ x 4½", np, Wednesday, nd. To an unidentified recipient whom he addresses as "Mon Cher Maitre." Meyerbeer says he has not been feeling well for the entire week or he would have come to embrace him since his (Meyerbeer's) arrival in Berlin. Now that he feels better, he doesn't want to delay this pleasure; however, he knows that the master is busy all day and Meyerbeer risks missing him or bothering him, so he accepts the teacher's offer of coming to see him and since he thinks Sunday is the day when the master has the most free time, he suggests that the master come to visit him around noon on Sunday. Two Violinists and a Pianist: Carlo Bassini, Ovide Musin, and Antoinette Adamowski. Carlo Bassini (1812-1870) Italian-born violinist and vocal teacher. Autograph letter signed, "C. Bassini," one page, 9¾ x 8, Brookly, Mar. 26, 1868. To Alfred A. Port, saying he would have helped him if he had been informed and he would be happy to see him at his convenience. One fold split. With Ovide Musin (1854-1929) Belgian violinist and composer. Two autograph letters signed, one page each, 7 x 4½", no place, no date. Both to Mr. Watson, one sending "two tickets for this evening" (not present), and one asking him to come at one the next day, "we shal speak about business and also for my concert in New York…." With Antoinette Szumowska (Mrs. Joseph Adamowski) (1868-1938) Polish pianist who with her busband and brother formed the Adamowski Trio. Autograph letter signed, "Antoinette S. Adamowska (Mrs. J. Adamowski)," 3 pages, 6½ x 5¼", Cambridge (Mass.), Jan. 22, 1921. To the Cambridge Tribune, explaining why they can't subscribe to the paper. Von Trapp, Maria -- "The hills have never seemed so live with the Sound of Music…". (1914-2014) Stepmother and matriarch of the Trapp Family Singers. She wrote The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, published in 1949, which served as the inspiration for the 1956 West German film "The Trapp Family," which inspired the Broadway musical "The Sound of Music" (1959) and the 1965 film of the same name, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
Autograph postcard signed, "Maria" and postmarked VT, 1984. Addressed in her hand on a postcard with her picture to Sonia Ruby in Atlantic City, NJ. The last surviving member of the Von Trapp Family Singers writes: "Dear Sonia, The hills have never seemed so live with the Sound of Music since your son Samuel arrived. His profondo baritone is as crisp as dried edeveis [sic]. We have asked him to remain to become part of our choral group, but he will need to be released from the Von Ruby Minstrels.
