Monumental Late 16th or 17th Century Japanese Storage Jar with Brown Seal Hallmark at Base, Intricately Hand Painted of Mountain Village. The signature piece in our Asian Art Collection. A rare and monumental late 16th or 17th Japanese storage jar, impressive in its size and condition. Jar measures 24¼ x 13 x 13" (at its widest) with the mouth 8¾ x 8¾". The jar is hand painted and heavily glazed with remarkably intricate images of an entire mountain village. An explosion of glazes in greens, aqua, blues, taupe, sienna, cream, gold gilt and brown are all used to render mountains, lakes, waterfalls, clouds, rocks, every manner of flora including gnarled pines, fir, persimmon and ficus, with gorgeous tiled buildings in amongst all the landscape and villagers within. Brown seal hallmark at base and not a signed name. With no chips, cracks or repairs, truly excellent condition. Important Chinese Wucai Plate "Golden Carp" Dish, Marked as Kiangxi, Early 19th Century. Our best porcelain piece in this auction, this stunning Chinese wucai plate has shallow rounded sides from a tapered foot extending to a flared rim. The interior has a central golden carp (iron red in color) encircled by five more surrounding the rim floating among waterplants and various flowers, a thin double-line of blue underglaze perfectly circling the center medallion and just below the rim. The exterior is similarly decorated with five golden carp and the double-lines of blue underglaze circling the base and rim. The six character reign mark clearly apparent. Footed base has has one very tiny chip on underside otherwise this piece is absolutely magnificent. Comes with a carved stand and a silk lined, silk covered presentation box. 21 centimeters in diameter (just over 8 inches) and 4½ centimeters tall. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

Qing Dynasty, Monumental Ink and Color Silk Painting, "100 Deer", Late 18th Century. The Qing dynasty was the last imperial dynasty of China dating from 1644 to 1912. Lasting almost 3 centuries, the traditional arts flourished especially in literature, pottery, embroidery, carvings and paintings. Offered is a monumental work from this period. "100 Deer", artist unknown. This painting is in the 18th Century Qianlong style and is an intoxicating panorama of deer set in amongst glorious forests, landscapes and mountain ranges. The piece measures 8 feet long and 13½" tall from scroll to scroll. While the silk has toned over the two centuries, the colors have remained quite lovely, with gorgeous shades of greens, blues taupe, sienna and umber. It remains a beautiful piece. The painting has been shadowboxed and measures 12' x 21". A crate has already been custom built for safe shipping, however an outside carrier is required to which we can make recommendations. Nanpin School (After Shen Quan) Edo Period, 12 Ink and Color Silk Panels of Auspicious Animals. Remarkable collection of 12 ink and color on silk panels from the Nanpin school (after Shen Quan) during the Edo Period. Carefully removed from a rosewood and fabric covered folio (included) and individually and professionally framed, these enchanting, stylized animals have charm to spare and boast wonderful colors. The collection has and array of mythical and real animals including: a wonderfully stylized elephant, a small brown monkey riding atop a white monkey, a fantastic, long-haired four-legged creature with "cub", three goats on a hill, a simian creature and baby, a single large goat, a large cat with coiled tail, a pair of procupines on rocks, a fox glancing at a white bird in tree, a fantastic fish scaled qilin with a white cat-like beast peering down from clouds, a tiger, and a recumbent male deer. Extraordinary & Rare Collection of 15 Porcelain Pieces from the Nanking Cargo Sunken Treasure. The Chinese porcelain in this lot were all recovered by a treasure salvage operation undertaken in international waters in June of 1985 that became known as the Nanking Cargo. The shipwreck was identified as the Geldermalsen, a vessel of the Dutch East India Company, lost after hitting a reef, while making the return journey from China to Amsterdam in 1752. The Geldermalsen carried porcelain from both the Ming and Ching dynasties as well as gold ingots. Offered are rare, intact pieces of handpainted porcelain from this historic dive. Included are 5 teacups and 5 saucers, 1 cup with hand and saucer, 1 bowl with saucer, and creamer that is plain without ornamentation. Understand while the design's blue underglazed painting is clear, the overglazed colors have oxidation from 200 years in the sea. There are no reign marks on the bottom of the pieces, obviously these pieces were made for export in the Mid-18th Century.

Collection comes with Certificates of Origin, Certificates of Authenticity and the 176 page book, THE NANKING CARGO, fully illustrated including photos of porcelain pieces exactly as are in this collection. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

Qing Dynasty, 19th Century Colors on Silk. The Qing dynasty was the last imperial dynasty of China dating from 1644 to 1912. Lasting almost 3 centuries, the works of art from this period are remarkable and important. In this color-on-silk dated 1868, an image of a qilin, mythological hooved creature (not too dissimilar from the unicorn in Western culture) is carrying a child which can mean an importance of a pending birth, of good luck and importance and a long life most especially in this painting of a variety of different gods in the Chinese culture. Artist unknown, dated 1868 this is a beautiful work bosting wonderful colors. Silk painting alone measures 56 x 32" and is framed in a rosewood carved frame 60 x 36". Normal evidence of age but overall in wonderful condition.

Monumental Famille Rose Bowl "100 Butterflies", Incredible Detail, Explosion of Spring Colors. Large, gorgeous, hand painted Chinese console bowl. Wonderful details are present in this explosion of colorful butterflies and blossoms with the density of work most impressive. The bowl stands 6" tall with a diameter of 16". The wide rim is a Spring season's worth of blooms and with the tendrils and blooms trailing into no less than 16 different butterflies including a large and fine one centered at the bottom of basin. Outside walls of bowl have four different clusters of blooms that add immeasurably to the appeal. This is a knockout piece sure to bring color to any home. No chips, cracks or repairs. Reign mark on base is Quianlong in rust underglaze however this is likely 20th century. Elegant Yongzheng Marked Vase with Flying Bats & Clouds in Relief Surrounded by Three Gorgeous Vignettes of Fishing and Sailing. An absolutely beautiful superbly potted vase with an ovoid body elegantly sweeping to a tall cylindrical neck. In soft aqua glaze with bats and clouds in high relief that completely surround three oval vignettes. Each vignette capturing at different points of view, a settlement of villages near a river with beautiful details of the landscape, buildings, mountains and water. One vignette has three small boats with sails in the distance as two men cross a small foot bridge in the foreground, the second a fisherman on a pier with cherry blossoms flanking and boats upon the water, and the third and possibly most lovely, a couple being ferried across the water, homes in the background and a well dressed individual in the foreground flanked by gorgeous trees taking in the views. Stunning Qing Dynasty Silk Embroidery of Two 5-Clawed Imperial Dragons. Wonderful silk 19th century (Qing Dynasty) embroidery boasting a five clawed dragon in the clouds over undulating seas. Excellent colors and superb craftsmanship with added appeal of two, five-clawed dragon on opposing sides, the emperor's sacred symbols of imperial power and dignity. The panels are mirror images of each other and may have been lifted from a garment especially given the elements of water on both ends.
Embroidery has a fabric border which dramatically accents the silkwork and presently is configured to be hung horizontally but by changing the wire on verso, can hang vertically with equally commanding appeal. 16 x 47" (or vertically, 47 x 16") and nicely framed in brushed gilt wood framed to 18 x 50" (vertically 50 x 18"). 19th Century Japanese Woodblock Triptych and One Complimenting Panel. 19th Century original Japanese woodblock prints boasting extraordinary colors. The first piece is a spectacular triptych of women possibly at dusk, each in their finest kimonos in front of blossoming cherry tree branches. What is so appealing is the lining of their tamotos or voluminous sleeves have different patterns of flowers, rabbits or panels. Each woodblock print is 13½ x 9½" and all three matted and presented in a single frame 21 x 37". The second piece compliments the triptych nicely of another Japanese woman at dusk holding a lantern, setting off beautifull the contrasting reds and blues in her kimono. Lovely Qianlong Glass Vase Carved Red to Imperial Yellow, Overlay of Dragons and Phoenix. Qianlong Glass (Also known as Peking or Tao Liao Ping) is a form of Chinese glassware that originated in 18th century Peking, China originally used in the fabrication of glass snuff bottles, "Peking glass" has since been appropriated for a number of uses and continues to be produced. Peking glass is an overlay carved glass created by layering material around a core, similar to Cameo glass. Peking glass is often made with different colored layers of glass, creating contrast when the outer layers are carved away. Historically, many pieces of Peking glass were made with yellow glass ("Imperial Yellow") due to the color's strong association with the Qing Imperial clan. Offered is a fine, impressive, 20th century example of this style of glass work. A vase with red glass overlay of Phoenix and Dragon expertly carved to yellow. Pair of Lovely Raspberry Glazed Sgraffito Bowls of Dragons with Personal Marks plus Kangxi Marked Tea Cup in Blue White Glaze also with Dragons. Lovely pair of matching 20th century bowls in a lovely raspberry glaze with dragons surrounding etched into the glaze revealing the white contrasting glaze below. Both have two dragons surrounding each bowl with clouds and foliate details at the base with the cranberry glaze ending at rims of bowls. Both have "personal" marks on glazed bases. The bright blue underglazed teacup likewise has painted dragons surrounding as well as one inside the base of the cup with Kangxi mark at base. The fourth piece is an antique plate painted in bright underglaze blue with three qilin figures surrounding the floral center with additional foliate design on verso just below the rim. Chinese Sancai Pottery Figures of Qilin, 18th/19th Century. Acquired from Vermeer & Griggs in Georgia, three late 18th or early 19th century Chinese Sancai pottery figures of qilin. Qilin are Chinese mythological creatures that have been interpreted in a wide variety of appearances taking on elements of deer, dragons, fish and even giraffs In concept, not too dissimilar to the unicorn in Western culture. Offered are three such figures. First a matched pair, their heads slightly turned towards each other. They stand 9" tall and 8" in length glazed in greens, brown and tans. The third is in a deep umber glaze almost with green and tan accents, sitting and slightly smaller at 8" high and 6½" in length. 18th Century Ink and Color Chinese Fan with Qing Dynasty Seal and Calligraphy. Painted fans have a long history and tradition in Japan and China. In China in the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was a popular tradition to exchange fans with calligraphy and poetic scenes of the landscape and nature. Offered is such a piece from the 18th Century and marked by Jiao He Gui. The lovely and delicate image of cherry blossoms and a pair of swallows have retained their lovely colors on the paper that has removed from the slats, conservation backed and presented as an album sheet. Professionally mounted in a plexi-shadow box, linen matted, and with a curved recess that accents the shape or the fan beautifully. Three (3) Beautiful 19th Century Japanese Original Woodblock Prints. Three striking examples of 19th century Japanese woodblock prints. "The Coast at Enoshima" by Hiroshige (1797-1858) is a wonderful scene of villagers and children playing and swimming at the rocky shoreline. Woodblock print is 14½ x 9½" and is framed in silver gilt wood to 23 x 16". The second block print striking for its use of so much contrasting brick red and blues is by Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904) of two well dressed women on deck as ma is passing. A cat looks on in lower right corner which can be a symbol of good fortune. 7 x 9½" and very handsomely framed to 16 x 20". The third and quite lovely woodblock print is a regally dressed woman, elegantly posed, enjoying tea and foods by herself under a blossoming cherry tree near a water's edge. 14 x 9½ beautifully framed and matted to 23 x 17" with just a slight loss of paper in lower right corner.   Collection of Three Chinese Pieces: Exquisite Red Glazed Bowl with Kangxi Mark, Celedon Lotus Bowl and Double Dragons Bowl. Collection of three Chinese glazed pieces. 1.) The standout is a lovely, delicate glazed bowl in rasberry that transitions to a remarkable mottled dark sand colored glaze. The sand colored glazed is speckled with the same rasberry tones upwards to the rim of bowl then continuing with this combination glaze in the interior of bowl. Underglazed Kanxi mark at base, the bowl measures 2¾ x 4¾ x 4¾" and is flawless.
2.) A simple celedon glazed lotus bowl, the leaves in high relief with the bowl sitting on a simple carved base. 2½ x 4½ x 4½", 3.) Chinese Sancai Pottery of a Recumbent Horse on Elaborate, Hand Carved Rosewood Stand. Charming recumbent sancai pottery horse glazed in a mix of umber, creams and chestnut. 6" tall and 10" in length. Seated on its custom, elaborately hand carved rosewood stand, the piece stands 8" tall. Acquired from Vermeer & Griggs in Georgia and it is thought to be late 19th or early 20th Century, this piece boasts great visual appeal with no cracks, chips or repairs. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng Marked Chinese Blue and White Bowl, Added Colors. Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng marked Chinese bowl. Under glazed in blue on white porcelain, all the other colors are overglazed. Vignette of three men being served tea in a low building while sitting at a table, surrounded by among pines, a leafy tree and flowers dotting a hill. 4 x 8 x 8". No chips, cracks or repairs and the colors are in appealing, soft yellows, greens and rust. A charming piece that was likely an export. Estimate Value $350 - UP

Four Japanese 18th and 19th Century Woodblock Prints, One Attributed to Torii Kiyotsune. Four antique Japanese wood block prints. The smallest of the four attributed to Torii Kiyotsune (acquired from The Metzger Collection as noted on verso) of three women cooking and washing. 6½ x 5" and framed to 10 x 8". Next in size is unsigned and shows an older man and a woman with a rake and broom in hand conveying a knowing intimacy. A turtle is seen at their feet, a symbol of longevity. 7 x 5" and nicely matted and framed to 15 x 12". The final pair of 19th Century wood block prints are by two artists of note. The first are the two women in blue kimonos having tea by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and titled The Third Month. The second is by Utagawa Toyokuni of a Kabuki actor. Even though by two different artists, compliment beautifully. Kuniyoshi measures 10 x 15" framed to 21 x 16" and the Toyokuni 11 x 15" and framed to 21 x 16". Estimate Value $300 - UP
