The Celebration in San Francisco, in Commemoration of the Successful Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable, Monday, September 27th, 1858. San Francisco, Sterett & Butler, 1858. Letter sheet, 16¾ x 11". Wood engraving and letterpress on blue paper. The sheet has a border made up of 35 small illustrations: four stars in the corner, thirty small state seals, and a portrait of George Washington at the top. Text on both sides of sheet describing the celebration. Larger illustrations in body of sheet include an image of horse-drawn carriages carrying 120 little girls dressed in white, representing all the States, and the principal European Nations; Rube Aldrich, just arrived, 120 days from St. Jo., Missouri; Adams, with his family of Native Californians; and the men of the Knickerbocker 5 Fire Company in procession behind a float of a small boat with cable coiled on its deck. Verso has two purple rubber stamps of "Kimball's California Glue" and "Water White Coal Oil / 20¢ a Gallon at Kimball's, 534 Valencia Street." Light toning, a few minor stains, and fold wear.

Cody, William F. "Buffalo Bill", Rare Double-Signed and Dated Signature. (1846 - 1917) William Cody was born in the Iowa Territory and lived several years in Canada before his family moved to the Kansas Territory. He was a Pony Express Rider, served on a wagon train, and after the Civil War, was awarded a contract to supply Kansas Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat, where he earned his nickname "Buffalo Bill." Cody remains best known for his Wild West Shows that toured America and Europe, creating a dazzling form of entertainment around Western and cowboy themes. Offered is a rare signature signed as "W. F. Cody" and "Buffalo Bill" and dated "Feb. 27th /74" On 4¼ x 3" trimmed, ruled paper executed in black fountain pen ink. This came from the collection of Hiram Buck, a Civil War veteran. Very clean, desirable double signature. Estimate Value $900 - UP

[Gold Rush] "Commandments To California Wives To Make A Happy Home," and A Miner's Letter Detailing Hardships. Illustrated lettersheet, 11¼ x 9". San Francisco, CA, James M. Hutchings, 1855. There are two vignettes at top. The one at upper left depicts a man writing at a table with a woman standing and a dog at his feet. The upper right vignette depicts a family in a dining room with four children playing. In the center of the sheet is the list of commandments for California wives. To the left of the commandments is an image of a man sitting outside a tent, and to the right is a woman with three children playing. "C.C. Kuchel del. W.C. Butler S.F. Mercantile Job Print, 130 Sansome St., S.F." A couple of edge splits at left margin and scattered foxing. Baird 42

On the integral leaf of the lettersheet is a two-page letter written by a miner, Andrew W. Carver, to his brother, from Klamoth River, Sept. 30, 1855. In part: "…I have been ingage the past summer in daming the river and it has proved like all mi speculaton…a failyer. i am now only trying to make grub for the winter…The beter places is always from fifty to one hunared miles a head and as I have traveled all the way from Calivaris county to Origon…and found those beter plces wors every time….The gold in this country is more spotted than in other part of the country wher i have visit. most of the claims is hard to get in a condition to take out gold and many of them when you think you have them in condition there is no gold to be found….i have not picked up gold by the bushel yet but expect every day when i will…" Wear and small separations at folds, and a few stains.
