Lot 27
1796 S-100 R5 Draped Bust Reverse of 1797 PCGS Genuine XF Details Damage. Mostly glossy medium to dark steel brown and chocolate. The planchet is reasonably smooth but not perfectly so, and there is an area of fine pitting in the field below the lower end of the hair ribbon and a single pit in the leaves right of the E in ONE. No notable verdigris but there are a few contact marks. The significant marks are a strong nick on the jaw at the throat and a light scratch arcing through the upper part of IB in LIBERTY. E-MDS, Breen state II, with light die clashmarks. Not perfect but not bad for this rare variety. Slightly superior to the Dr. Charles Ruby net VG10 example in the condition census. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Our grade is VF25+ sharpness net VG10. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

1797 NC-2 R6 VG10+. Sharpness VF20 but covered with very fine porosity, the roughness so minor the surfaces remain rather glossy. No verdigris. The only marks are a dull nick near the dentils left of the hair ribbon, a smoothed pitmark in the middle of the bust, and a small patch of slightly stronger porosity at the base of the 1 in the denominator. A very tiny planchet clip affects the dentils behind the head and opposing ones over TE in UNITED, as struck. Slightly glossy chocolate brown. MDS, Breen state II, with a strong rim cud break over D-ST. The date and legends are all bold. Called F12 net VG10 and tied for second finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #20698. Bland says net VG10 and tied for CC#2 honors as well. A cent that has nice eye appeal in spite of the minor imperfections. And it comes with a superior provenance as well. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1802 S-232 R1 PCGS graded AU58+, CAC Approved. Lustrous medium chocolate and steel brown with lighter steel brown and tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas on both sides. Looks new to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a few microscopic handling marks and the lightest touch of rub on the highest points of the devices. A small spot of dark toning hidden in the hair right of the ribbon knot and a tiny scratch nestled between the T & A in STATES are good identifying marks, but you need a strong glass to see them. MDS, Breen state IV. There are obvious die clashmarks and scattered fine die rust on both sides plus a couple faint die cracks on the reverse, but the cud break at ATE has not formed. A shallow low spot caused by debris on the die covers the area immediately under the ear lobe. This is a very attractive cent that offers mint state eye appeal. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#7 in the Breen/Bland census. Our grade is AU58. The attribution and Wurtzbach-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1804 S-266a R4+ PCGS Genuine VF Details Damage. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown. The planchet was lightly smoothed and retoned. There is no notable corrosion but there are some small nicks scattered over both sides. The only notable mark is a smoothed pit on the jaw near the ear. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks or cud breaks. This cent was struck three times (although the PCGS label says "Double Struck"). The offset between impressions is not large, but there is clear doubling on most of the devices and clearly defined triple profiles in several places including the lips, jaw, the obverse dentils from K-12 to K-3, and on the lower part of the reverse (especially on the ribbon right of the fraction). A remarkable 1804 cent; can't recall ever seeing another multi-struck example of the date. Our grade is F15 sharpness net VG8. The "Double Struck" feature is noted on the PCGS Secure label. 1804 S-266b R5 (for the die state) PCGS Genuine VF Details Environmental Damage. Mostly glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Looks perfectly smooth to the unaided eye and the details suggest a slightly higher grade, but a glass reveals extremely faint roughness hidden under the attractive toning. There is an area of slightly darker olive brown toning in the field before the neck and a shallow diagonal nick in the field off the chin. No verdigris. This cent offers nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Rare M-LDS, Breen state III, with a cud break at RTY but none at MERIC. The date and legends are complete and clear. Our grade is net F15. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
