1855-C. NGC graded MS-60. Better than average strike but still a tad weak on Liberty's hair curls above her ear and on the central reverse, specifically on LL of DOLLAR and the 8. A hint of golden rose tone. The surfaces show a few scattered light handling marks, as one should expect for the grade assigned, but still and all a coin that apparently did not circulate.

When David Akers did his study on gold coins, the 1855-C gold dollar earned the "lowest" average grade for known survivors at VF-27. This is likely due to the fact that approximately 80 percent of these coins are poorly struck up. Striking issues don't equal wear, but nevertheless this fact has pushed the overall grade down on many survivors. Only a modeste number are still considered to be mint state, and this is one of the condition rarities of the Gold Dollar series. Only 9,803 struck. Pop 4; 11 finer, 7 in 61, 4 in 62. (PCGS # 7533) Estimate Value $19,000 - 20,000

1881. PCGS graded MS-68. CAC. PQ. A lovely coin with hints of light gold tone, with a sharp strike and essentially perfect surfaces. It would be hard to imagine any coin even slightly finer, which is why this lofty grade is so conditionally challenging to find, with only a handful that have earned the MS-68 grade, and a few others with the "+" slightly finer. Only 7,620 struck. Pop 40; 5 finer, 4 in 68+, 1 in 69. (PCGS # 7582) Estimate Value $10,000 - 11,000

1884. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. CAC. PQ. An untoned gem proof with strong cameo contrat and essentially perfect surfaces. The fields and devices are pristine. Interesting when examining this coin is the clearly repunched date seen on most (all?) of the Proofs and at least a few of the business strikes of this date and mint. A beautiful example! Only 1,006 struck. Pop 9; 6 examples graded higher in 67 as Cameo. (PCGS # 87634) Estimate Value $12,000 - 13,000

Lot 704
1886. PCGS graded Proof 66+ Cameo. CAC. PQ. Strong contrast between frosty devices and deeply reflective fields, enough to earn the desirable Cameo designation. The surfaces are fabulous, with no detracting nicks or hairlines that are commonly seen on lower grade examples. Hence the eye appeal is intact and strong. Only 1,016 struck. Pop 2; only 3 examples graded higher, 1 in 67, 1 in 67 Cameo, 1 in 67 Deep Cameo. (PCGS # 87636) Estimate Value $15,000 - 16,000

1888. PCGS graded Proof 65+ Cameo. CAC. PQ. A flashy coin with light hints of golden tone around the reverse periphery. Nice contrast between the mirror fields and the frosted devices, and delightfully clean surfaces for this little jewel of a gem proof. In demand for the trio of lucky 8s in the date, as well as for the quality itself. Only 1,079 struck. Pop 2; 17 examples graded higher as Cameo & Deep Cameo at PCGS. (PCGS # 87638) Estimate Value $11,000 - 12,000

Pop 14; 26 examples graded higher at NGC in Cameo and Ultra Cameo. (PCGS # 87638) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000
