Lot 148
1854 N-11 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved (OGH). Frosty medium steel brown and light olive. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Essentially flawless; a speck of crud in the dentils between stars 11 & 12 may help identify this cent. LDS, die state c, with die flowlines connecting the 1 & 4 in the date to dentils below. Nicely struck except for the top of the ear, which is a bit softly impressed as nearly always seen on this variety. Our grade is MS60. Housed in an old small-size PCGS holder with a green label. Estimate Value $300 - UP

1855 N-9 R1 Knob-on-Ear PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with a peep or two of faded mint red showing on the obverse. Both sides are covered with a very thin layer of wax that could be removed quite easily, and it is so unobtrusive that the folks at PCGS decided to ignore it. The only marks are a spot of darker toning just left of the peak of the 1 in the date and another off the right point of star 3. Otherwise this cent is flawless. Sharply struck M-LDS, die state e. The "Knob" break under the T in LIBERTY is quite bold and cracks outline where a branch of the knob is forming under the adjacent Y. A very nice example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS60; perhaps a couple points better if the wax was removed. The "Knob on Ear" feature is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $600 - UP

1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 PCGS graded MS64 Red. Frosty mint red just starting to mellow to steel brown on the highpoints, about 85-90% of the planchet showing bright mint color. The surfaces are lustrous and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only notable mark is a small spot of toning (not carbon) in the field left of star 11. E-MDS, die state b. There is a hint of prooflike reflectivity in the fields and star 6 is severely weakened due to a clog in the die, the so-called 12-star die state. A beautiful cent in a neat die state; worthy of a top-notch collection. Our grade is MS64+. Among the finest known of the 12-star die state. The attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,250 - UP
