Partial autograph letter signed "A Conan Doyle," 3½ x 4¼", no place, no date. To an unidentified correspondent, four lines with closing and signature: "over Mrs. Phelps…you had a day to spare you would give us great joy by coming down to us. Very many thanks for the book just received. I promise myself a treat tomorrow. Yours very truly A Conan Doyle." Uneven upper edge, else fine. Accompanied by a postcard photo. Easton Press Collector's Edition of The Last of the Mohicans, The Sea-Wolf, and Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Three books by James Fenimore Cooper, Jack London, and Arthur Conan Doyle, all bound in leather, Sherlock Holmes was published in 1981 and the other two in 1979. The Sea-Wolf has color illustrations by Fletcher Martin; Edward A. Wilson did the illustrations for The Last of the Mohicans; and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes has "a selective collation of the original illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele, Sidney Paget and Others." Group of Authors, Poets, and an Actor/Director, Including Sandburg, Christie, Tarkington, Caldwell, Campbell, and Skinner. Carl Sandberg (1878-1967) American poet and biographer. Autograph note signed, one page, 6 x 4", no place (1962). This note was returned with a book to Tony van Renterghem, who was working with Sandberg in 1962 on the research for a motion picture on the life of Christ ("The Greatest Story Ever Told"). Written in red ink: "I swear before god I did not desecrate pages herin with foul lead pencil evidence of some dirty stinker. Carl Sandberg." The story of van Renterghem's association with Sandburg is typed on the verso of the note. Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing especially with human affairs. Autograph letter signed ("T. Campbell"), 2 pages, London, Aug. 17, 1832. To George Condy, Manchester, discussing his current affairs. Agatha Christie (1890-1976) English crime novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Typed letter signed, on blue Winterbrook House / Wallingford / Berks / Wallingford 2248 stationery, one page, 7" x 5½", Berkshire, England, January 24, 1973. To Mr. Radley regarding his request for a signed photo. Boldly signed. A printed bookmark, picturing Dame Agatha, is also included.; Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) American novelist and dramatist. Typed letter signed, on SEAWOOD / Kennebunkport, Maine stationery, one page, 7½" x 5½", Kennebunkport, Maine, July 20,1933. To Mr. Paris. Tarkington accepts an invitation to join an "Honorary Committee." Erskine Caldwell (1903-87) southern writer who addressed poverty, racism and social problems in novels such as Tobacco Road (1932) and God's Little Acre (1933). Typed page from "The Weather Shelter" signed at the bottom. Otis Skinner (1858-1942) American stage actor associated with Joseph Jefferson's troupe. Large signature and date (1925). Document signed "Nathl Hawthorne" as Surveyor for the District of Salem and Beverly and Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Salem, one page, 4¾ x 7¾", 1847. A receipt signed by Hawthorne verifying receipt of payment from James Miller "for Rev boat to J.C. Howard." Irving, Washington -- ANS Re Dining With Benjamin Disraeli's Father (1783-1859) American author, historian, and diplomat. Autograph note signed in the text, one page, 5¼ x 4¼", Maddox St. (London), April 25 (the year 1825 has been added in another hand). The note reads: "Mr. W Irving will have great pleasure in dining with Mr. & Mrs. D'Israeli on Tuesday, May 14th." Isaac D'Israeli was the father of Benjamin Disraeli, a future prime minister of England. Smudge in lower right corner, else fine. Irving went to England in 1815 and lived in Europe for 17 years. Washington Irving spent 17 years in Europe, where he served as secretary to the American legation in London and as minister to Spain. This book, written after he returned to the United States in 1932, details his experiences while accompanying the U.S. commissioner on Indian affaiirs on a surveying mission in Indian Territory. Henley, cut closing and signature from a letter; O. W. Holmes, signature and sentiment, matted with engraving; Eugene Field, signature on a small card re renting a carriage, as a member of the Union League Club; William Cullen Bryant, signature and date (Feb. 27, 1869); Dorothy Parker, 1948 TLS as Chairman of the Spanish Refugee Appeal; Ogden Nash, 1959 TLS saying he has never received an interesting rejection letter; James Dickey, a 1983 TLS sending a signed photo (not present); and Allen Ginsburg, the first nine lines of "Howl," typed, with one holograph correction, followed by an ANS saying, "This is an idiot idea to request a writer sign a fragment opening of a poem. It makes me feel like an 'object' at the moment. Allen Ginsburg June 7, '80." Lastly, Archibald MacLeish sent three typed copies of his poem "Psyche With the Candle" to Michael Hecht, two with holograph corrections and an ANS on each to Michael Hecht; one admonishes him for not having caught one of the mistakes and a note on a second page corrects "fevor" to "fervor" and adds a holograph note, "If your textbook has this error please ask your teacher to request a correction." The third copy of the poem includes all of the corrections and is signed, "Archibald MacLeish / signed for Michael Hecht" at the bottom. Including return address on transmittal envelope, there are four MacLeish signatures. Overall fine. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Wodehouse, P.G. -- A Charming, Whimsical Article on His Beginnings as a Writer, Boxing, His First Visit to New York, Etc (1881-1975) British author and humorist. Typed manuscript signed "P.G. Wodehouse" in red marker, titled "Getting Started," 9¼ pages, no date but written in his eighties. In 1902, when "the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank decided…that the only way to keep solvent was to de-Wodehouse itself," he turned to writing and soon earned enough to visit America, primarily, he thinks, to see some of America's pugilists, with whom he was fascinated. He describes his encounters and stories he heard, the use of language, of manners--all with charming humor. Pages are lightly toned but otherwise fine. Estimate Value $250 - UP
