Also two Portsmouth NH straight line cancels with dates 1795 & 1798, 1797 New York straight line with date, 1797 Petersburg VA straight line with date, 1814 Columbia TN straight line with date (badly creased clear of mark) and 1815 Nashville TN oval mark with 37½¢ war rate charged (edge soiling) to Natchez. 1801-1815 Nashville (Tenn) Straight Line Cancel Stampless Collection, 19 Covers. Valuable collection of the Nashville straight linecancels consisting of 19 stampless folded letters, mostly mounted on annotated pages. Many interesting such as 1812 folded letter to a Capt Braham at Fort Stoddard in the Mississippi Territory that was sent via the Southern Route, used before the Great Mail Route (taking a difficult journey) and 1805 wrapper with handwritten endorsement "Rec'd January 4, 1806 from Andrew Jackson." Various rates from "FREE" to 25¢ (rate for letter going over 500 miles). Mixed condition to be expected. We don't recall ever seeing this many offered together. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

Tyler," as ex-President on mourning cover addressed by his wife, Julia Gardiner Tyler, to her younger sister, Margaret, in New York, neat handwritten "Chas City C.H. Va 17 April 1846" postmark, mourning cover is in memory of Mrs Tyler's father, David Gardiner, who was one of eight spectators killed on Feb 28, 1844, when the "Peacemaker," a bow gun on the steam frigate Princeton blew up during a demonstration - Tyler and his much younger wife to-be were below deck at the time and were unharmed, very fine. Handwriting on cover is that of Helen Hunt (Jackson), author of "Ramona," when she was 19 or 20, sent to Ms Hunt's lawyer in Boston (typed and signed note gives support that it is Ms. Hunt's handwritting).
