U.S.S. New Orleans Apollo 14 Recovery Crew Baseball Cap #2. Property of a crew member aboard the recovery ship U.S.S. New Orleans for the Apollo 14 splashdown. Alan B. Shepard, Jr., Stuart A. Roosa, Edgar D. Mitchell flew a modified capsule, especially with regards to the oxygen tanks after the Apollo 13 mishap. We are offering two Apollo 14 caps in this auction. This one most definitely shows use and has for some reason an Apollo 15 button attached to it. We are leaving it exactly as consigned. Size small and has elastic in cap but not really adjustable. Excellent vintage color litho 8 x 10" color photograph taken on the Hadley-Apennine landing site showing LM and Rover with James Irwing saluting the flag. Signatures are " Dave Scott Apollo 15 CDR.", "Al Worden Apollo 15 CMP and last, Irwin has signed "His Love From The Moon, Jim Irwin". Two Transmissions From Space: Data Strips from Mariner 2 and Apollo 15. Great for space collectors of every age, two transmission strips from two eras of America's space exploration. The first is a data information strip receiving information from the Mariner 2 spacecraft while in the vicinity of Venus, likely radiometric temperature readings. Included is an information sheet and a copy of a note by a JPL senior director who provided the strips, a Mariner 2 commemorative cover from Dec. 1962 with explanation card of communication waves as well as a wonderful vintage original 8 x 10" black and white photo of of Mariner 2 during testing at JPL. The other strip is a data read-out from the instrument package left on the moon known as ALSEP that measures seismographic activity (vibrations) beneath the moon's surface. Complete Set of Five (5) Apollo 15 Lunar Orbit Charts (A-D) Dated 7/26/71 and One Lunar Contingency Chart. Complete set of five "Roll Maps" used for training on Apollo 15. There are four charts labeled A, B, C, and D and one identified as Contingency. These maps are 13" in width and about 150 inches in length and taped together end to end to form a doughnut. These were used in training for the mission and all dated July 26, 1971 property of one of the NASA flight directors. In mint folded condition and very detailed. Also including a very small map with no specific training number 35 inches in length and taped end to end with director's name typed discretely on strip. Estimate Value $200 - UP

Archive of Flight Director's Apollo Lunar Module Workbooks and Ringed Binders ca.1970s. From the archive of the flight director, three rubber-band-bound/loose ringed workbooks and countless notes and memos all dated around 1970 mostly addressing Apollo 14. All three bundles were removed by the director and filed away. First a large, comprehensive handbook, Lunar Module Systems Handbook LM-8 Vehicle prepared by the Flight Control Division with countless schematics, illustrations, charts, graphs and specs, including lunar surface equipment. The second rubber-banded file is a personal trove of memos, notes and graphs with substantial original hand written notes and graphs addressing structure, equipment, loads, suit and cabin details that promises hours of review. Finally a thick bundle of memos again issue by the Flight Control Division with changes and revisions to the Lunar Module Systems Handbook. This lot is fascinating material but definitely exhibits use. Fascinating reference material. Estimate Value $350 - UP

Apollo 16: Three Ascent Lunar Surface Maps For Training Purposes. Three ascent monitor charts of the lunar surface dated April 16, 1972. These were used for training purposes, printed on plasticine photographic paper. Two of the Descartes Traverse Areas measure 10½ x 16" and the other 10½ x 14". The third is 8 x 32" and indicates in printed circle the Apollo 16 landing site. All three in excellent condition and fantastic training pieces. Estimate Value $200 - UP

Ringed training manual, a collection of 13 maps made of platicine photography paper most dated February 23, 1972 and April 16,1972 that show coordinates of the Moon, titles of areas and craters and the surface in remarkable detail. Outstanding training maps for the Apollo 16 mission to train crew visually the lunar target areas by assessing craters, peaks, terracing and other topographic details. Visual target areas include North and South Ray, Keptyn, Alphonsus but most certainly Descartes. Loose collection, many of the maps printed on thick photographic paper, all with impressive clarity. Spectacular Apollo 17 Flown Flag and Presentation In Recognition of 37 Year NASA Director and Senior Manager. Unique and spectacular Apollo 17 Flown Flag Presentation in recognition of 37 years of distinguished service at NASA that was awarded to a celebrated former engineer, technical expert, flight director and senior manager. This is a wood, 20" diameter plaque with two engraved panels with Apollo, Skylab, ASTP and Shuttle Emblems along with images of the various technical achievements he participated in during his long career as well as an image of Texas his home state and location of NASA. At center and protected under a lucite panel, a rare United States flag that was flown aboard Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the Moon, December 7-19, 1972. This was presented by NASA in March of 2004. Absolutely outstanding in every regard. In excellent condition and one of a kind. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

Apollo 17 Large, Flown, Ablative Heat Shield Plug Property of the Flight Director. From NASA's last manned mission to the Moon, a rare, flown Apollo 17 large ablative heat shield plug encased in a circular piece of lucite and engraved in black along bottom, ''Apollo 17, Dec. 6-19, 1972''. Heat shield plugs are made of fiberglass which is hand-filled with an ablative resin material in order to limit high heat exposure during re-entry. These are highly prized by collectors and this one is particularly fine. No scratches, chips or clouding and the piece exceptional showing the deep black scorch caused from re-entry. Outstanding piece! 3¾ x 3¾ x 3½". From the collection of the Flight Director of Apollo 17. Estimate Value $900 - UP

Apollo 17, 1972. "Too Beautiful to Have Happened By Accident," Limited Edition Multicolor Lithograph Signed by Alan Bean. No. 110/600, 35 x 26". Published by Long & Company, Houston, 1984. Signed in pencil by Alan Bean at lower right. This lithograph is almost never available today (the edition sold out in 1995). Printed in the lower border is a quote from Bean. In part, "Apollo 17 astronaut Eugene Cernan said, 'When I stood on the moon and looked up at the earth, I felt it was just too beautiful to have happened by accident….'" Fine.
