Commodore Robert Stockton (conquered California in 1846), holograph address panel free franked "R.F. Stockton" and addressed to H. Brierly in Clinton, CO; Leland Stanford (one of "The Big Four" investors in the Central Pacific Railroad), cut signature; C.P. Huntington (one of "The Big Four"), closing and signature from a letter (soiled); Charles Crocker (one of "The Big Four"), closing and signature from a letter, in a PSA/DNA holder; H.R. Crocker (established first printing and lithography plant in San Francisco). 1898 TLS; an 1878 Buy/Sell form from The Carson City Savings Bank; John W. Geary (first mayor of San Fran., governor of "Bleeding Kansas"), signed coupon for a San Francisco bond; William Chapman Ralston (founder of SF's Palace Hotel and The Bank of California), 1874 ALS to R.D. Atherton; George Hearst (Mining magnate), signature on 2x3¼" card (some staining); and Adolph H.J. Sutro (creator of Sutro Tunnel), 1892 Wells Fargo check signed. Alfred Smith (1873-1944) Four-time Governor of NY and Democratic U.S. presidential candidate in 1928. 1932 TLS as president of Empire State, Inc., saying, "I lost as much myself in Warner Brothers stock as he paid for his stock." Toned. Herbert H. Lehrman (1878-1963) served as Governor from 1933 until 1942, then as US Senator (1949-1957). Card signed as Governor of New York, with title. Thomas Dewey (1902-71) Governor (1943-54), and 1944 Republican nominee for President, losing to FDR. Signature cut from a letter. (3 items)

Ickes, Secretary of the Interior, signature on official card; Harry Hopkins, Secretary of Commerce (1938-40), signature on official card; Jesse H. Jones, Secretary of Commerce (1940-45), ANS as Secretary giving autograph, with old tape marks at corners; James A. Two Statesmen From New York: Alfred E. Smith and Hamilton Fish, Jr. Fish, Hamilton Jr. (1888-1991). Congressman Fish introduced legislation that provided for the return of the remains of an unknown American soldier killed in France during World War I for interment in a hallowed tomb to be constructed in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Today known as the Tomb of the Unknowns, it is guarded 24 hours a day by the most elite sentries of the US Army. Right-profile photo inscribed and signed to Walter L. Reynolds, 14 x 11", April 2, 1935. Very fine. With a typed letter signed by Alfred E. Smith as Governor of New York, 1½ pages, on Executive Chamber letterhead, 10½ x 8", Albany, Jan. 7, 1924. To John Golden, Hudson Theatre, NYC, regarding the constitutionality of the "ticket speculator act" and informing Golden that "you could not raise the question of the State's police power in a matter of this kind."
